The rub rail is installed. taco Marine part # V21-9613 It's rigid vinyl with a ss insert.
Since I was working alone I used ladders to hold up the ends of the 20 foot pieces while I screwed them in place.

Me and my ladders have done many a rub rail! They work cheap! :D

In the past when I've pointed it toward the bow I've had a problem with water being forced into the system when under way and overflowing the bait tank. Well see how this works. Maybe I should have pointed it sideways

HeHe

Actually you may find that it will create a vacuum with it pointing backwards.

The seacock is the answer to slowing down or stopping water flow into the tank when not wanted or to much.

Some larger yachts have a pull out plug on the raw water intake for the engine as an emergency bilge pump. The intake facing aft will do as well while you can still make headway. :D

Re: Here We Go Again

The 20sf project has been moving along at turtle speed over the last few months. Other important obligations that needed attention have been attended to and taken care of and so the boat has had to take a back seat for a while.

When I left off I was in the process of making a fiberglass leaning post that will incorporate a Kodiac live well internally. Here it was curing in the mold:

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7355.JPG

The mold was made out of 3/4 mdf. A heavy coat of wax was wiped into the mold and then PVA was sprayed over the wax.
Two layers of heavy matt and 4 layers of 1708 were used in the lay up. The corners were all reinforced with 6 inch 1708 tape. As I was laying up the matt I began to see alligators appearing.

I dont know what is worse having a part stick to a mold, which requires scraping off the mold from the part or having lots of alligators to fill and sand smooth. This part ended up having tons of alligators....a result of using too much wax and the pva. You can see the alligators in the pic's below:

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7365.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7366.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7367.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7398.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7399.JPG

Fast forward after many hours of sanding, fairing, priming and finally painting;

We have all been waiting anxiously for your latest post, glad to see you back :) Everything's lookin' awesome, almost time to splash :D :D. Once you get it dialed in, I'll be very interested to know how high above the parallel of the keel your cavitation plate is.

Thanks and keep up the great work!!

IMHO if you let the PVA dry the alligators were from inproper mixing of gel before catalyst,or not enough catalyst in gelcoat and inproper mixing, or gelcoat too thin. Or a combination of all or some of above. Could also be ambient temp during gelcoat cure. :D

You also have to let the gel cure fully before the first skin!

JohnB 01-18-2008 12:12 PM

Re: Here We Go Again

Don has much more experience with gelcoat gators, and has probably diagnosed it, but one thing I have found when I made my live well mold was to spray, with a spray gun, 2 coats of pva. The first one very light, and let it dry for about 30 min, and then the second one heavy, but no runs. Then let it sit an hour, the put the gelcoat on. IMHO, if you don't get it on even, or have some of it that is "wet/moist" underneath, it gators. One of your pictures looks like my cap, which I put pva on with a brush (bad idea).

strick 01-19-2008 08:21 PM

Re: Here We Go Again

Thanks for the comments fellas. I did let the PVA dry. I then rolled on the Duratec maybe a little too thick. Then while it was still slightly tacky I then started the lay up. Your probably right Donald.

I was thinking that the combination of just wiping on the wax and not buffing it.... plus the PVA caused the part to Pre-release too fast which in turn caused tha gators but what the hell do I know... I'm just a rookie. I've made lots of parts with molds and this is the second time I've got gators so I'm new to the whole gator thing. All I know is that the only gators I ever want to see again better be in a swamp. :D

strick

hermco 01-19-2008 09:16 PM

Re: Here We Go Again

Gators and pre release are two different animals. I would guess the fact that you skinned a non cured gel or Duratec is at least part of the cause for the gators. :D

Looks great Strick. Question: How far back is your bracket? I'm about to purchase a bracket for my 20' and I've read that 30" is overkill, too far back. I plan on putting a Merc 175 Opti on the back, so I imagine it is a little taller than your Yamaha. Thoughts?

Re: Here We Go Again

The weather gods have been good to me lately allowing for ample time to work on the boat. Things are really starting
to take shape now. I have the LP mounted and all the plumbing to the live well complete. The only things left to are to finish the wiring, rigging and then some upholstery work. I've been instructed by one of the higher up's on this site keep the pics coming!

Here are some shots of the basic layout on the boat;

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240491.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240492.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240493.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240494.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240495.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240496.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240497.JPG

Emblem and sticker are affixed to the hull! The big thru hull is the drain for the bait tank;

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240504.JPG

The bracket has a 25 inch set back

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240505.JPG

Shut off for the bait well overflow

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240507.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240508.JPG

The starboard side of the Lp has a quick release for the wash down hose;

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240509.JPG

On the port side there is another door and a end of day drain for the bait tank. After talking with bigshrimpin I
decided that I did not want to cut another hole in the side of the boat for the bait tank drain. It will drain onto
the deck and out the scuppers. I usually fish with just a few live baits for stripers so the water could not be too gross most of the time.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240514.JPG

Some of the plumbing inside the LP

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240516.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240517.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240523.JPG

The fiberglass Leaning post has a flange that fits perfectly into the top of the bait tank

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240518.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240519.JPG

I had limited room in my rigging tube and while I was able to fit all the rigging thru the tube things were a bit cramped in there so I decided to install a pos and neg terminal on the transom so I can run smaller battery cables
to the motor thereby freeing up some space in the rigging tube.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240522.JPG

Access door on the transom;

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1240529.JPG

Theres plenty of room to walk around on this boat;

Re: Here We Go Again

Hey Chuck everything is really coming along great! Are you adding a hinge to the bait tank hatch? One thing I would add are hose drains for the transom rod holders to keep the water off all the rigging. I had a problem in my Seavee, contender, whitewater with water corrosion coming through the rod holders just a thought :cool: :cool:. cant wait to see her sitting in the water! I am really impressed with your skills.

Strick, Beautiful!! Really a super 20! Now tell the horse's to take a month and just chill...don't get sick,just eat grass and be cool,so you can hook that boat up to the truck and slip on down here for a little live baiting sails.The bite is on and that would be a cool little two man sailfish killer! :D

Re: Here We Go Again

Thanks everyone.

I think I will put in 2 drains for the rod holders in the transom. I have one left over so I'll have to order another one. I will leave the bait tank lid removable. I bought the battery switch holder from Svendsens marine in Almeda, Ca but I don't know who makes it. There are no markings on the part that I can see. Doing the final touches with the wiring and rigging this weekend. Joey how about I tow the rig to Baja and you fly down there and we fish :D

Re: Here We Go Again

After nearly a year and a half since this project started I was finally able to splash the boat this weekend.

The motor fired right up.....once I remembered to put in the kill switch lanyard Thanks Big for the help on that one! :D

Bigshrimpin met Lisa myself and the kids at a local launch that is protected from the heavy winds we have been experiencing over the past several days. I'm a little superstitious so I had to christen the dam thing before it even touched the water. I did not have the courage to smash the cheap 10 dollar bottle of champagne on my nice new paint job;

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1270535.JPG

I poured a little on the top of the bow;

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1270537.JPG

Then I was told that I had to actually spray the champagne on the hull;

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1270539.JPG

Some celebratory sipping;

A family shot with our "new" 40 year old boat;

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/P1270547.JPG

The weather was not all that great for boating but Tim and I ran the little skiff up and down the slough a few times. The Yamaha 130 has lots of power. Two guys and 35 gallons of fuel got us nearly 42mph via the gps. The boat turns on a dime and is very stable. Everything is working properly and I cant be happier with the way things have turned out. I have a little tweaking to do with the prop, some upholstery to do yet and maybe a t-top down the road but other then that it's pretty much a done deal.

Before we left I had Tim putt around for some in the water shots;
