installing high speed pickup
1 Attachment(s)
Pulled apart and flipped over to see where it may go... I want to replace an old through hull but I also want it on stbd side .. So looks like the 1 1/2 one on stbd .. Looks like I need to make a cardboard template..

Before I install this I want ya'lls input on installing this pickup where the 1-1/2 is on the starboard side.. Verses closer to the keel... I was wondering if this pickup would cavitate to much cause it being close to the strake..thanks in advanced

Well after a long debate in my little brain I decided to make a lexan template and trace the pickup on the bottom of hull... Measured carefully from strakes to make sure we are somewhat parallel... Then I took my calipers and measured the thickness of pickup and strainer..set my router and off I went carefully taking a little by little off and trying to keep it within the lines..I found muscles I did not know I had in my shoulders and legs. As I was upside down ,on two ladders in the water, routing 38 year old glass.. All while the tide was coming in.. Fun fun fun... Now that is done I mixed some west epoxy and sealed.the glass... I did take the glass down just under flush about 0.410 ".the part measured 0.360" After epoxy sets up i will go back and route to 0.370" or close to... I wanted to leave the glass sealed up..

After the epoxy dries. I will cut the hole out to fit the pickup ..then build a jig to help hold it in place while I glass the sucker up...

In decided to just glass the crap outta it... Actually laid layer upon layer of Kevlar with csm.. I had some laying around so thought that this would be a good place for it..I took the pickup out and finished glassing up. To about 3/8" -1/2" thick. I'll go back and finish routing out the opening again cause some resin settled between the mounting face on the flange. I left just enough space for the 5200 to bake a nice seal and still be flush.. I will also 5200 the Kevlar housing when I reinstall the pickup

Third picture l waxed a 1" PVC pipe and used it as my jig after the initial part was glassed. I did not want to risk bedding the pickup in until I was satisfied..
