Sounds like you are not energizing the starter drive solinoid, that pushes the gear out to the flywheel.

I pulled my starter off and took it apart, cleaned up the insides with a little electrical cleaner and threw it back together. Charged my battery and jumped it off my car just to give it the full 12 volts(13.6?). Same as before, starter spins like hell but the gear doesn't jump up to engage the flywheel. Guess I will be looking at a new starter---the brushes looked brand new??? and the inside was clean as a whistle, maybe a wire is broke in the armature or there is a ground somewhere in there???)

I go directly to the starter with my connections--- both pos and neg.

I can turn the motor over-after the pugs are out, so I guess it is not froze up.

I don't think you need to buy a new starter, sounds like you need a new starter drive,the spring that pushes the gear up to engage the starter. Any auto electric shop can do this for you. Should cost $40-50.

Actually there is a marine electric company down the street
I thought I would try and stop by today after work.

I hope they are open late. It sucks to come back to work after vacation, the first couple days are catch-up.

Just a follow-up on this starter thing....

This motor had been sitting in the previous owner shed for about two years. I pulled the starter looked at the brushes, they looked brand new, put a little grease on the bushing at slapped it back on ...no go!!
Took it to a auto/marine electric repair shop and told the guy the story. He says hold.... comes back with my starter a minute later and says " here ya go it needed oil on the armature shaft"!!!!
Now it works like a charm [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] Amazing what a little lubrication can do [img]/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img]

Pat,
I had a girlfriend once like that. would spin and spin, make alot of noise, but just wouldn't engage. Finally figured out that lubrication with Capt. Morgan did the trick...
