Thats interesting Trayder. I wonder if my 1999 175 carb. has that feature. My outboard mechanis says thats how you should start most cars as well. Vezo.

If Chuck's 1999 does not have the feature than I would doubt it.

I do not know the years that had the advance start feature (if in fact that is even what it is called) but will do some research and find out

Answers on the starting questions:

1: It is called "quickstart"

Every time you start the engine, QuickStart electronically advances ignition timing 10 degrees until the engine warms up. If the engine is already warm, it de-activates after about 5 to 7 seconds. ( I got this info from "jegervais" at Iboats.com)

2: Quickstart is on OMC engines from 1989 and up.....
So according to my local OMC dealer (Don's Marine) both you and Chuck have this feature.

Hmmm, that's interesting. I never knew my '89 Johnson 225 had that feature. I always thought my engine's starting problem was due to age. Now I know what to do this season.

Re: What the ...?

Trayder is right, those engines jump to life when you do that. They just would turn over until I tried it and they fired right up.

Chuck,
The early diagnosis is blow by through the hub exhaust. Just seems like a lot of blow by. I will let you know if I learn any more.

The weather here has been cold with rain every other day. Just can't seem to get a full day to work on the boat.

Re: What the ...?

I had a '92 25 Rude that would do the little oil puddle under the prop. It was oil residue from exhaust.

It bugged the hell out of me, as it just left a mess all the time.

Jason, very cool verification. Thank you. Did not know that. Mike.

My old mercury is an oil dripper ... through the prop ...

Seem to recall a members 300 hp Black Max blowin all sorts of nasty out the prop when we fired her up a last year

Jason, I don't hear that "Clicking" sound like your motors when I try it. I don't know how to tell if the timing is being advanced

Re: What the ...?

My old flats boat with a 70 Johnson did the same thing.
It came down to the oil. TCW3 is todays standard.
A friend (I know that is hard to believe that I have one)
did an oil test with all the major brands. Mercury TCW3
was the best, it had more of the crucial properties than
any of the others. When I changed brands the problem went away. I use Mercury oil in my Johnson, Mercury, weed wacker and blower. I will scan the results and post them for all of the oils that he did.
See ya, Ken
