Muddy,
I have the same setup - raised flange molded into the deck, horizontal screws to join the console to the flange. I am removing most of the deck and building in a 6' hatch for the fuel tank, along with bolts to attach a new, narrower console.
It's a lot more work, but should be easier in the long run in terms of fairing and finish work.

What thickness Penske board did you guys use? Also, what methods have been used for making the channels, does anyone agree on which is best, and how deep do you think the channels need to be? On my 72 SF, the only things resembling channels are the areas along the side where no non-skid was placed (so probably not even 1/16" depth difference).
