There are not many people that use Signiture, Awlgrip, or Gelcoat that are happy when putting a dark color, like blue over white. All the chips/etc show through. I don't think it is a function of the type of paint, as it is dark over light. If you prep it real good, and put 2 coats on, it probably wears/shows better over time.

Hello Hermit......Yes I also talked to Tom the other day about Signature Finish and he gave up lots of info. A good guy to work with ya when painting your boat. .........Thats cool that Ted Williams fished from your boat................I met him many years ago at a dinner in NB Canada for the Miramichi Salmon Association. I'm bringing this thread back to life. I will be painting my CC in the next few months. My sky blue exterior awlgrip is pretty shiny but my oyster white cap and interior are dull and faded. I may try this signature finish based on posts here. Any updates or other members use this paint?

What do I need to do to prep the awlgrip for the signature? I was thinking like 220 grit sandpaper.
Do I need to buff between coats? Will 3 coats be enough?

Try #320 It should be enough to scuff it. You DO NOT need to buff between coats. Scuff with a green 3M pad then wash & tag rag. Your now ready to to continue with the next coat. Two coats @ 8-2-4 mixture . If your not satisfied with the look, then add one coat 8-2-5 and then buff with 3m PERFECT-IT should do it ;)

Thanks for the suggestions on Signature paint, Captain Chuck. I just tested it on a motor box and was impressed enought to order it for the hull. Tom with Signature is as nice as he can be, but my head was spinning after listening to his "how to do it" instructions. I'll probably start a new thread for the rehab of my recently acquired '77 23' Sceptre. I got so upside down on my "no-holds-barred rehab" '74 Tsunami that I just had to have a go at another to try to even things out!

Once you get his instructions and read them a couple of times it seems easy. I painted a complete Scepter with his paint, everything, also painted about half a CC and would easily do it again. If you have any questions give me a PM. I'm also from NC and am in the area frequently.
