The "Potter Putty" is a crazy thing. I had to use a hammer, crow bar, 8ft 2x4, and and skill saw. I reduced the weight of my 18sf atleast by 200lbs just from removing the potter putty and the 3/4in thick infloor bait well.

Getting close to finishing removal. I'd like to replace the bilge drain plug and put it in line with the boat's center. I'd have to cut the keel support back to do this. How
structural is that support to the transom?

I did that exact same thing. I built a knee and used a scarf joint where it tied in to center stringer. I just cut away the bottom corner of the knee where the hull bottom meets the transom. This allows for water flow to either side of the center stringer and it created room to install the bildge plug in the center. In the pictures you cant see the cut away corner of the knee but you get the idea.
