I understand Terry. My dad still believes pointed ignition and carburetors are a thousand times more reliable than electronic and fuel injection. If something happened he kept a set in the glovebox with a feeler gauge and screwdriver. The funny thing is he has had 3 Toyotas with over 100k on each with no issues..... But when something does happen he's going to be screwed left to die on the side of the road because he can't fix it with a hammer and screwdriver!

If it's a Hi-lux, it's probably the distributor cap. They were bad about cracking and shorting out. :D

Your dad raised a smart boy but sometimes I don't understand his son's logic. Why would someone go hunting 85# Carbos on the Tortuga Bank in 150' of water when they can just drive down the road a bit and get a nice bag of scallops on September 17th? Puzzeling!

I still get kick out of Moose's video "adventure" with the rather nice size shark. Seeing that video, I think I know why I don't dive, I can't imagine the stinky cleanup in a skin tight dive suit. I would go through a hundred Clorox wipes to sanitize.

About the Yamahas, which I have owned two and both were great engines, I was at the September Tampa boat show two years ago thinking seriously about re-powering the clunker, drug the wife along to the largest Yamaha dealer first and asked what their price was for a 4.2L 250hp installed. He pulled out a price list and said this is the retail cost and it would be an additional $1200 to install. I picked myself off the floor and said "is that the best you can do?? His reply, "that IS our best deal", turned around and walked away. Did not even say tough shit or kiss my ass....nothing!

No reason to NOT fan the flames of a good ole fashion THT style thread! Keep it rolling.....this should help....the Potter 23 is a poor knock-off of the true 21 by Carl! Talk amongst yourselves!

Chip, Yamaha makes great motors that are inherently reliable but at a high price tag. I wouldn't hesitate a bit if you want to go with the Yamaha as plasma coated, non-iron cylinder linings are not some brand new technology that came out yesterday and have also not been problematic with engine manufactures that use them to lighten all kinds of motors including Yamaha.

I find it quite amusing to see the level of Yamahatred on all the boards but for the most part it is non-Yamaha owners that raise the most concerns. I'm quite surprised GFS hasn't started with the F350 flywheel rant yet. :D

I will run old school omc smokers until they legislate me out of existence.
I can fix em with a hammer and a feeler gauge...

The 8 6 4 gm engine was a wonker if there ever was one.
We owe much to NASA and Mobil 1.

Up here we have to carefully balance being thin skinned, hard headed and have a lack of direction. It's like juggling!

With regard to the fuel starvation/lean combustion/overheated piston issue, the 4-stroke motors do have one advantage, i.e., the wasted exhaust/intake stroke reduces the time that the piston is exposed to extremely high combustion temps by 50%, which would reduce the tendency of the piston to overheat/expand and seize in the bore. However the other problem that occurs with very lean combustion is detonation, and both 2 and 4 cycle motors are equally at risk for this destructive phenomenon, which can quickly fail rings, ring lands, or even blow holes in the piston, either of which can score the cylinder walls. Oil cooling of the pistons does not necessarily help reduce small local hot spots or glowing carbon deposits on the piston surface which can trigger detonation. Although you MIGHT be able to hear the valves rattling caused by detonation on a 4-stroke, there is no such warning on a 2-stroke, so BRP has installed knock sensors on the 3.3/3.4L G1 E-TECs and all the G2 models. If the EMM detects knock, it will enrich the fuel mixture and retard spark, but if that isn't effective, it will put the motor into safe mode and display a "knock detected" warning on the digital gauge. They've also used a higher strength/higher temperature NASA aluminum alloy for the pistons on all E-TECs to provide additional margin against these sort of problems.
