Drink a beer and re-read...slowly. |
Re: \"THE VORTEX\"
i think i might have had too many beers last nite. ill try again today..

Re: \"THE VORTEX\"
On page 2 of this thread is some pictures. You are looking at top row first item is a plastic cup, the second item is the cut out of the plastic cup that looks like a golf ball on the tee, then there is the sprinkler fitting female on the one side and male thread on the other. That’s the piece you cut half the female side off and drill two holes for the pull. And then the o ring. On the bottom row is two completed VORTEX’S ready to go. You must have been drinking one of those imported beers and that’s where you messed up.

Re: \"THE VORTEX\"

Re: \"THE VORTEX\"
I got mine done, 1 worked pretty good the other needs some work as it wouldn't close. I will go back a re-work the flap as this must have been OPERATOR ERROR :D
|
Re: \"THE VORTEX\"
i tried my vortex's on sunday. they work pretty good. i also need to try a different thickness for the flap. they still let in some water when u stand in the back of the boat..

Re: \"THE VORTEX\"
One of the things I have done is support the golf ball to the tee is by putting one layer of black election tape over the inside wall of the flap & tee. In that way even if the flap breaks away from the tee part it still works. As far as a little leaking goes I still get a little myself perhaps with another material it would seal it up better like rubber the thickness of a tire tube. Any which way not bad for under $1.00

Re: \"THE VORTEX\"
I will try going up in size a tad to a nickel and maybe a thin layer of silcone, I will report back.

Re: \"THE VORTEX\"
I have not built mine yet. I bought some copper plumbing tube that fits inside the 1" scupper - I did this to maximize the inside diameter for max water flow. I am going w/ the condom idea. I want to use some of 'that tape' ( it molds to itself and is very malleable - what is that stuff called - it's named after a guys name ? ) on the outside of the copper tube to increase the outside diameter so that it fits snug within the actual scupper in the floor. QUESTION for the designer/head beer drinker: Is the "T" version a better Vortex thane the balloon/condom ? Please be advised: I have not had a beer yet, so I am not in true form for talking about the Vortex. I will quickly correct this... |

Both methods work and work well. I believe the fingers of a medium thick glove works best when using the diaphragm type VORTEX because of the diameter of the fingers and because of the quality of the rubber, balloons come in second but again the Condom’s although they are a little to thin for lasting scupper usage they have true conversational value that will last well beyond the boating trip you make. I would ask though, not to leave the condom diaphragm VORTEX in the scupper holes while pulling the boat and trailer out of the water with other boaters around that might not understand their purpose when they see them dangling out the scupper holes this could generate adverse conversation about Seacraft boats and their owners which we should protect. I must admit large quantities of beer does help both in the manufacturing process and in your own bata testing program. Good luck FellowShip _______________________________________________ My motto: Just for the Grins :D :D :D |
Re: \"THE VORTEX\"
I have to give our "founding-father" Fellow-Ship credit for starting my mind set on the improving the vertical scuppers.
I actually have the Vortex kit from Home Depot that he recommended, but decided to go with the Vortex II route for additional washdown/livewell capabilities. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v4...h_MVC-106F.jpg It works great!! Check out this thread for more info; http://www.classicseacraft.com/forum...b=5&o=&fpart=1 Both ways are a winner! - Nick |
Re: \"THE VORTEX\"
YA, YA, YA but mine only cost a $1.00 + beer.

Re: \"THE VORTEX\"
YA, YA, YA, you win on the cost.
Mine are in the ~$50 range per side plus the priceless cost of a bottle of imported OUZO! - Nick |
Re: \"THE VORTEX\"
Sounds like a great idea. Anyone have a closeup pic of a Vortex? I'm probably going to try the glove finger version.
Thanks, Paul |
Re: \"THE VORTEX\"
Hi Too Fly:
Wow, I can’t believe you found this one in the archives back in 2003 I had a lot of fun with this thread and used the “VORTEX” for several years. I decided to kick it up a notch on my boat and have done several additional projects on her since then one of which was to spend lots of $ and days of work to do things in more of a traditional manor. One of which was my scuppers Picture below http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-a...60516_2738.jpg As for the "VORTEX" I looked around for some better pictures but cant find any. On the second page of this thread are some pictures that if you cut and past and then in large that might help. Bottom line is this - get two PVC fittings cut the top off, add a finger pull, tape a glove finger to the threaded part with tape, cut a slit in the tip of the glove finger, and add one or two o rings and stick her in. The “VORTEX” do work very good and you don’t have to do any major scupper projects on the boat. FellowShip …………………………. Just for the Grins :D :D :D :D Official 23’ SF Antique Classic SeaCraft Owner |
Re: \"THE VORTEX\"
I've switched my scuppers out the transom if anyone local wants my old ones. Don't think it makes sense to ship them. I went with the "plastic cup cut like a golf ball on a tee" type flapper valve and have a half dozen small solo cups to make replacements with.

Very nice scupper job! However, I'm stilling having issues with visualizing how the Vortex works, especially the Solo plastic sauce cup version. Mainly, I'm not sure how it performs like a check valve? I suppose I need to try throwing one together and testing it out. I'll give it a whirl. Thanks, Paul |
