Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Thanks for the comments and photos guys!
The reason for the deck removal was due to the following things. Removing the splashwell Removing the rear vents Adding full transom Found soft areas of the deck Had to push the 150gal fuel tank (3yrs old) 8" forward. Had to create fish box Found water pooling under the foam Had to remove the rotted ply that held up the fuel tank Need to reinforce the transom, Bracket and new motor I just couldn't see doing all of this and leaving a soft deck in place. In addition, I rarely fish, I am a diver in Florida so the boat gets used year around. So LARGE scuppers in the rear are necissary to allow water from the dive gear out. Making it look pretty after it's all done WILL be the hard part. But, I am sealing the deck and only installing ispection ports. I am lucky enough to have a fried that owns a fiberglass decking company which makes the raw materials fairly inexpenive. Right now, I have approx 15 hours in the whole process. Grinding does suck! Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Made some progress on Sunday. Removed big tank. Spent the better part of the day grinding the bilge tank area getting it ready for the Tank deck to be installed. Wasn't going to getcoat the bilge but a buddy talked me into it. Got the template cut out for the transom, and old holes patched with structural glass putty. SOOO much fiberglass dust.

Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
I am thinking about doing the following to the bilge / tank platform area.
Sorry for the crude drawing, didn't put much time in it. Any opinions, out there. Jason http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...6_001_0001.jpg |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Well....No opinions/advice on the bilge tank area.
Sooo. I intalled one of the slats like the drawing shows. Will do the rest tomorrow. Jason |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Made a little more progress this weekend until the grinder got the best of me.
I got a little helper http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...omplete049.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...omplete048.jpg Transom looked good, sounded good, but wasn't...so it had to go. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...omplete031.jpg I will be installing 10 of these slats to hold the gas tank. This should eliminate water pooling, and provide ample support. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...omplete050.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...omplete051.jpg more progress photos when the hand heals a little. Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Jason
Do I dare ask what happened to the hand ?? Little guy looks like he's into it !!! Interesting replacement of the fuel deck ....do those strips have a slight crown in them ?? |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
The hand......Oh lets just saw that a 4.5" grinder with a chainsaw blade on it is definately the way to core an old transom but not the way to trim your left index finger nail.
The tank slats are made of fiberglass board as you can see. But have a piece of rubber on top to keep the tank from rubbing. My tank is larger and a little wider than the factory tank and will be installed so that it does not move or vibrate. Right in front of the slat you see will the fish box bulkhead. A BIG FISH BOX |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Thaks for sharing all the pics. and sorry to hear about the Grinder bite, ouch..
I like the shot of they little guy with the axe taking it out on the transom. I like you idea and think it will work very well. The only thing to look into are the rubber pads rubber contains carbon, which is cathodic to aluminum and will cause galvanic corrosion. (according to Yachtsurvey.com) |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Trayder,
Thanks for looking out for me. I had heard the same thing! So... I had a friend of mine who works for a power company, get me some power line insulating blankets, which is what you are looking at. They are Die-electric (<-SP), virgin rubber that is carbon free. They will not promote corriosin. I think with less of the tank sitting on a salty fiberglass board the tank will be better off. At least it'll be 50lbs lighter, as my tank is 92.5" long x 28.5" wide. Anyone out there make a big fish hold out of the forward storage? I'd like to see some pictures if possible. I'll post more photos as I progress and heal! Best of Luck, Jason |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Perfect.
again tx for sharing the pictures |

Got a little done today. I started on the fish box area to give myself a break from the transom. I can swing a hammer nyway with the bum hand.I wonder if I can post a photo of my finger? :) Anyway, Here are a few photos. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...n/DSCF0008.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...n/DSCF0009.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...n/DSCF0010.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...n/DSCF0011.jpg I also got quite a few pieces to the box laid up, they should be installed tomorrow. Jason |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
A little more work completed. Finished the inside of the box. Got more work done than I thought I could.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...n/DSCF0014.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...n/DSCF0015.jpg A bit more to do on it yet. |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami

Wow..your moving along !! What materials (glass, resins and paint) did you use for that box ? |

Put some time in this weekend. Finshed coring the transom, sanded and ready for new wood. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM023.jpg Template made, Hot glue gun and a door skim worked great. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM020.jpg Need to make some adjustments and prep for installation. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM021.jpg I've had a change of plans. No 4 stoke for me, at least not yet. Found a deal on a set of twin yamaha 150's with everything. It was too good to pass up. So...Its got me rethinking my transom and bracket setup. They are 25" motors, wish they were 30's. I don't want to put the 25's on a brackey, soo....I am adjusting my transom design. Is anyone there anyone out there with twin 150's? I'd love some performance numbers. Thanks, Jason Jason |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
A little more. Enlisted a heavy weight for some sanding!
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM034.jpg Transom Port side http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM036.jpg Transom, stern http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM039.jpg Transom, inside 2 layers chop mat, heavy resin, drawn in with 2X4's and cut pieces. Came out nice, I'm going to wait three or four days, remove the wood, and add another sheet. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM038.jpg Best of luck, Jason |

Why dont you want to put 25"s on a bracket ?? |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Scott,
I want those motors as close to the boat as possible due to weight. I know there are alot of 23's w/ brackets outthere. I don't think I'll need any additional floatation with the bow being heavy and the fuel tank shifted forward. I am also afraid of swamping the motors on these steep ramps we have. I looked at the potter bracket and was interested until I saw the price. I mean no offense by that, it's probebly an awesome product, just out of my price range. Here are a few more links to brackets. These guys are not as widely known as others, but their prices are seem good. http://www.dadmarine.com/index00.htm http://www.dolphinmarinefabrication.com/ Please someone let me know if I shouldn't post these links. I do not know them nor am I affiliated in any way. Please advise. Jason |

Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Went ahead and cut, shaped and dry fit second 3/4" ply. Looked good, two sheets of chop, alot of resin and about 50 screws. Everything sucked in real good and the outside of the transom is perfectly flat.
Jason http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM046.jpg |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Added some more glass around the edges of the transom last night. Followed up this morning adding some roven supports prepping for the final layer of roven on Tuesday Night.
Glassed the fiberglass tanks supports in today as well. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM049.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM050.jpg I need to do some clean up tomorrow. My motors await a new transom. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...zzen/side1.jpg Best of luck. Jason |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Removed the old water logged ply wood under the area where the battery boxes used to be located. I replaced it with a foam core followed by three to four layer of chop mat. Solid, water proof, and will never rot or hold water. These two platforms will be for my oil resevoirs. If I decide to go with four strokes for my next set of motors, they will become storage.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM053.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM055.jpg Some grinding and clean up, and they should do just fine. Finished up the bilge and decided to set the tank to get it out of the way. I never totally removed from my boat, as it still has 50+ gallons left in it. This shot is of the tank in place as well as the oil res. platforms. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM056.jpg Transom shot facing the bow. Took off another 30lbs of that putty crap used to stick the original deck. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM057.jpg Next on the agenda, finish final layer of woven roved on the transom, fill in the deck scuppers, grind and fair out the out side of the transom. Jason |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Completed final layer of 24oz woven roven on transom. Came out good, but it shure soaked in the resin.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM067.jpg Need to measure, cut and cap the transom at 25 inches. With twins, the transom can come up a few more inches , I think. Anyone know what the over all measurement from the bottom (apex)of the hull? A diagram, or some kind of photo showing where the measurement should be taken from would helm. Thanks for any assistance. Jason |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Find a vertical centerline on the transom. Measure out each side for the new motor centerlines. Standard was 26" centers so you would go out 13" from the centerline each side. The new 4 strokes want at least a 28" engine center line so you may want to setup the holes for 4 strokes in case you repower in the future. Measure 25" up from the engine centerlines for 25" shaft length motors and this will be your final transom heighth. Make a horizontal line at this heighth and cut your transom. Be sure you have allowed enough width for steering cyllinders and cowling clearance to the outsides.

Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Thanks Hermco,
If I understand you, this is what your talking about, please advise. Did I take the transom height measurement from the right place? or should it be on the lower chine. Thanks again for the assistance. I borrowed this transom photo from earlier in the post! Thanks guys! Jason http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...0_001_0001.jpg |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Measure up 25" from where the engine centerline begins at the bottom of the boat.
|
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Thanks, Hermco. I'll measure and cut tomorrow.

Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Hermco,
What are you using as a notch width for a single 4S (say 150HP) ? |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
I am usually filling the transoms and adding a bracket but if you are thinking of repowering with a 4 stroke on a boat with an existing cut out transom I would temporarily mount the motor with the two top bolts only and hook up the steering then turn hard over both ways. If you have clearance I would turn the motor hard over and begin trimming the motor up carefully to check for full tilt clearance. It might help to have a second person as a spotter so you don't crush the cowling when checking.

Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Capped the transom, need some fairing and sanding.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM083.jpg Got a little tired of sanding and grinding so I decided to see how a little rubbing compund and wax would make me feel.I was pleased to see how the 32 year old gel coat was going to hold up. I was pleasantly surprised. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM084.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM081.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM082.jpg http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...TRANSOM080.jpg |

Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Looking really good! The end is in sight.
What are the aft boxes made of? How did you make them? |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
The aft boxes are made of 1/2" ply wood. They were made custom and then glassed in place with chop mat inside and out.
Trying to make this boat my last. Jason |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Jason,
Looking really nice. How difficult was it removing the glass from the windshield? What did you use for primer and paint? Based on the color, the primer looks like Trilux. |
Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Scott,
Man... Two posts in two days!!! Someone actually read my thread. I though for sure I was the outcast of the site due to all of the alterations I am making to the Tsunami. Scott, The primer brand was TEMPO. I used in on an old alum. outdrive in the past it was good stuff. Therefore I used it again. The top coat is a glossy black two part epoxy from Fiberglass Coatings. Not too sure of the brand, but it sure stuck well to the primer. As for the glass.... Well, I'm not sure if my Boat windows were Originals. Pretty sure the four front side windows (excluding the fold out window) were originals as they were heavy safety glass. The others were plexi. The glass ones popped right out after removing the friction fit gaskets. The plexi came out easy but in 20 pieces. New gasket material was ordered from American (60.cents a ft)+ shipping. Oh yeah, I used a soft brass wire wheel to remove the old paint. I would recommend anyone doing this make sure to cover anything that they don't want stained black. I am redoing my top cap anyway so I just let it fly. Best of luck, Jason |

Re: 74 Seacraft Tsunami
Thanks, I'll try to keep it updated. Hanging motors this weekend. I have to get them off those pallets.
