Re: Stripped Out!
Terry, You're making such great progress! She's really coming along great & cleaning up nicely. I'm soooo envious!
Skip & I definitely want bunks in our 21, but we're so far away from that point. Will you build new seat boxes? or pedastal seats? |
Re: Stripped Out!
It will be pedestal seating. No more boxes.

Transom Help....How to cut?
OK today I took off the skin on the transom. Most of the wood was not all that bad for 40 years. However where the cap was joined to the transom, it leaked over the years and is mush at the top corners.
QUESTION...When replacing the transom, how far back do I cut the stringers??? Or do I just trim enough away and then fill later on with epoxy after the new transom is in. Transom Starboard. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3248.jpg Center Stringers http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3243.jpg Close up of mush. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3245.jpg Port side stringers http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3244.jpg Rear top cap inside http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3247.jpg |
Re: Transom Help....How to cut?
Not sure what you mean by fill later with epoxy but you should trim back just enough to be able to slide in your new core. It's gonna be a pain to replace the transom from the inside with the cap in place. Are you going to remove the cap at the transom? I see that the cap looks to be glassed to the hull. If thats the case then you may just want to cut away the cap at the transom replace your core and then laminate the cap back in place after you replace the transom. Another option would be to cut a "notch" in the top cap and slide in the new core from the top then fill the notch later. You are about to dig in nice and deep with this project. :D Hope some of this helps.

I will take the back cap off. There is a natural cut point and to put back on should be almost painless. Digging the wood out will be the fun part. |

Hmmm, I agree, a Merc 350 would look nice in there, not to mention a VW or Volvo diesel!

Update on Rebuild 2/20/08
Got a bunch of things done over the weekend. First was getting the wood out of the transom. Not to bad, just had to have the right tools. A little wood chiseling at the bottom. No cutting of the stringers. They were tabbed in nicely and not ultra tight.

Update \"21\" March 10,2008.
Over the last few weeks I have been working on my front deck. Previous posts showed that all the balsa core was wet beyond saving. I decided to save weight and use a product called Tuff Stuff. It is a polyurethane 1/2 inch and was scrim and scored.
I first made my check list, and then built the bridge to reform the crown. After that was done the old bottom glass was cleaned up and prep with epoxy. The tuff stuff was also prep with epoxy and then the score side was filled with epoxy, cabosil, and micro balloons. This same mixture except a little thicker was troweled on the bottom and then the tuff stuff placed scored side down. The pictures will show some of the process. All pieces were numbered on the dry fit and then marked so I could line them up easily. The crown is back and looks good. Now I will prep the old skin and put that on in the next week. Thats it for now. Check List... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3297.jpg Bridge Work http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3296.jpg Under Deck http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3295.jpg Work Table and Cabosil http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3305.jpg Score filled in http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3306.jpg New deck core http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3300.jpg Thats it for now. |

Re: Update \"21\" March 10,2008.
Very nice, clean work!
How does the Tuff-Stuff compare to Divinycell? Weight, cost? Also curious as to how 'flexible' it is in making a crown... Could you have made a bigger crown if you wanted? Nice welcome mat too! |
Front Deck Update 4-27-08
Finally got 95% of the front deck done. Just a little more fairing and on to the front cap rails and dash.
The first 3 pictures show how I used strips of wood and dry wall screw to hold the deck in alignment with the seams. Sand bags just would not hold the crown down...so this seemed like the easiest way. I got tired of mixing epoxy and cabosil together so I bought a product from Systems 3 called. Gelmagic. It is an epoxy that is premixed with the solids. All you have to do is mix the resin and hardener and the stuff trowels out perfect. I will never mix cabosil again for a big job. After removing the fasteners I then used epoxy and cabosil (small job) and filled the seams. Then covered the seams with fiberglass tape. After a 1/2 gallon of QF3 and a lot of sanding by hand, it is ready. I have every sander known to man, and yet I still like to block the areas by hand. I guess that hark ens back to my street rod days when there were more rounded surfaces. Now I will work on the cap rail and dash. Then continue towards the transom. Thats it for now! Mechanical fasteners Left,Center, Right. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3326.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3324.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3325.jpg Seams filled and taped. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3353.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3360.jpg First coats of QF3 working forward and center. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...IMG_3366-1.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3408.jpg You can see the crown. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3412.jpg That enough to bore you all. |

Re: 21 Hull #136...Restoration...Started
Moving along... I got the dash filled and faired out.
The Original Dash Panel looks good, so I plan on using the SS panel and insert new gauges. Just basic work here. I did not want to fill from the back of the dash because the angle was such, that cabosil running out would be a problem. I just laid on layer of 1708 on the back side to close off the holes. Made some plywood plugs for the front, and mixed up a bunch of epoxy and cabosil, and start laying in. After that was dry I started using Quick Fair to get every thing smooth. Used dykem to find the low spots. Next week on to the transom. Re: 21 Hull #136...Restoration...Progress Update.
Since the last post I got a little more done. With out trying to bore everyone, lets just say I have not found any new techniques. I am using the tried and true methods that I have learned here on the sight.
This post is mainly on the transom area, and how it was done. With out going into the pros and cons of why I chose wood for the transom, lets just say the last transom lasted 40 years (wood). If this one lasts that long I will be way over a 100. However I am using synthetics in other parts of the boat. That being said, I did pre-soak the ply. Then I put one layer of 1708 on the front, in between, and on the back side. That puppy weighed in at 115#. After it was all installed I fillet the edges and tabbed the transom with 3 layers of 1708. Added some limber holes and painted the area with one coat of Tile Clad HS. Transom Pattern, glass and clamping of transom pieces together. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3281.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3449.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3440.jpg Cutting the Cap off Per Strick. Thanks for this piece of advice. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3428.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3431.jpg My son in law. With this thing weighing in at 115# no way I could muscle it in alone. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3495.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3496.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3498.jpg After tabbing I used the Lost Mold process recommended by Mr. Moesly, to Strengthen a few stringers, where the old glass was good but pulling away from the wood stringer. It works the stringers don't even move now. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3519.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3504.jpg Also added some limber holes. Picked up a pencil technique from bowrider. Then cut the ends off and painted. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3525.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3530.jpg Painted the inside of the transom with Tile Clad. One coat. No need to do more right now till I see what will be covered. Also patched the transom holes and rough faired out the transom. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3529.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3417.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3528.jpg Finally addressed the rear cap. Thats it from the island. |
Re: 21 Hull #136...Restoration...Progress Update.
Nice work on the transom and removing the cap. It's much easier to glass the cap back in place then to fair out the entire outside of the transom.
I noticed that you put a layer of glass on the backside of the dash and then used wood plugs to fill up the holes and then puttied over that? If that is the case then you will get cracking around were the holes were filled over time. The correct method is to grind a bevel around each hole and then glass up to the edge of the bevel. It's Ok to use the dowels as fillers so to speak however you need some glass over them for strength. Speaking from experience :D strick |
Re: 21 Hull #136...Restoration...Progress Update.
Once again, great job Terry. It's pretty cool that the current 21's getting rebuilt are being done to the high standards that Carl put in them originally!
|
Re: 21 Hull #136...Restoration...Progress Update.
Strick...Thanks for the tip. I will be sure to glass over next time.
I know it is hard to see on the low resolution pictures, however each hole in the dash was beveled including the plugs. I then filled the holes with cabsol mixture of epoxy. Then I started with the quick fair. Hopefully this will stave off the future cracks. Snooker...we keep trying  |

Re: 21 Hull #136...Restoration...Progress Update.

That being said here is what I did. One of the stringers had a section that the wood was rotted out because the bulkhead was cut out and the stringer was not sealed up. The fiberglass cloth was solid and not pulling away from the hull. Rather than cut it out, all I did was rough up the area and apply 1708 mat over it and epoxy it. The old stringer is the mold, and the new glass the stringer. You can kick it, pound it and it is strong. Beats the heck out of cutting out and replacing. Coosa comes from a local supplier. Here in Florida they build so many boats that there are retail/wholesalers all around. Walking into there store is like going down to the local Ace, except its all Fiberglass boat related supplies. Hope this helps. |
Re: 21 Hull #136...Restoration...Progress Update.
In between tropical storms, hurricane watches and the frickin' feels like 105 temp. I got the floor project under control.
After serious consideration of all types of materials, I decided on the following. The tank coffin floor would be "plascore"(divincell) with a layer of 1708 on top and bottom. Weight factor is 15# versus 31# for the old floor. Plus this is the part of the floor you will never see again so no rot is good. On the cock pit floor I am using 1/2 inch marine ply...1708 top and bottom. I stayed with wood on this part since the old floor lasted 40 years and was in decent shape. The floor grid and bulk heads where spruce. Again the old wood was in great shape. I would not of replaced it, except there where spots where water intrusion rotted the wood because of excess drilling of holes...that were not sealed. The old gas tank was 33 years old and in excellent shape. However it was a bastard size. To low and to long. The previous owner cut the mid bulk head out to use this tank. I had Tony from Sunrise Tanks, in Venice Fl. (this guy is good and reasonable) cut down my old tank, and then make me a new tank to fit in the original coffin. The old tank is now in a forward area as a extended cruise tank. I should have approx. 80 gals of fuel. The bulk of the fuel will be in the CG point of the boat. Most of the construction process so far has stayed pretty close to what was done originally. I thought if it lasted this long why change a good thing. Enclosed are a bunch of pictures. I have used many of the ideas that where posted on this site, and I thank all of you for your sharing. Getting the floors all tied together will be the next step. The tank floor and keel...Plascore 1/2 inch http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i.../Tankfloor.jpg Before Painting http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/B4coffin.jpg After Painting and Engine Bulkhead http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...rwithTClad.jpg Floor and bulk head glassed http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3679.jpg Floor Grid and bulk heads http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3685.jpg Glue and stick http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3691.jpg The end result of Glue and stick http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3697.jpg I found some retro hatches...one side will be a live well and the other a cooler fish box. Well Planned & Clean Work Terry! You mention and show the extended fuel tank install. Did you consider or do you still have room for a fresh water hold? If you plan on doing some Island/Dive or Camping trips, it sure is a nice feature. I utilized unused space between the tank and the forward deck hold and filled it with a "bladder" type tank. I (and the ladies) sure love getting the salt spray off!

Well since the last post I have not accomplished as much as I would of liked. It seems like a little burn out set in so I backed off a some. After the holidays I will hit it hard.
Question to all you who have been there and done it. :D The main cockpit sole is all ready to be glassed in. Besides some fuel line hoses and ?? is there any reason not to glass it in. Here is my thought process. The bottom of the sole has one layer of 1708 on it. The top sole has a primer coat of epoxy. I was thinking of tabbing the floor in and taping the seams, make it fair and then lay on or over some pre-made up 1708 panels. Sorta ala Strick on his 20 footer. Let me know what you think? It has been one year since I started this project. I have been keeping a running log on all the materials I have used.
This post should be informative for folks wanting to do a complete tear down and materials needed to get to the point where I am at. I will not include any sundry items or costs. Epoxy and resin- 21 gals. 1708 mat-33yds. Sanding disks-100. 3 inch fg tape-2 rolls. Quick Fair-3 gals. Hi-temp marine bondo-1 gal. Latex gloves-300. 3/4 marine ply-2 1/2 marine ply-3 1/2 divinicell-1 1/2 placore-2 Tile clad paint-2 gal. Gel magic adhesive-6qts. Silver tip fillet-3qts. Solvent-5 gals. A foot note here this is the material I have purchased so far. Some of it is still being used. ;) Hope this sheds a little light on what it takes to do a ground up. |
Re: 21 Hull #136...Restoration...Progress Update.
It has been awhile since I had posted any pictures and progress.
Let me tell you it always takes longer than you think. The first thing made in this post was the below deck ice chest. I made this from 1" urethane sheet foam. Both sides were laminated with 1708 and epoxy. The parts where than cut from measurements and assembled. This is my first real OH S**t. When I did all the measuring the floor stringers where not attached. So when I went to install the box it would not fit under the stringer due to the fact I could not rotate it. Never fear, just cut one side off and then assemble inside the stringer system. What a royal PIA. Trial fit before laminating parts. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...IMG_3697-1.jpg Materials being laminated. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_3712.jpg Box done with sides cut off re-fit. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...Trader/001.jpg Final fit. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/CIMG0006.jpg Don't ask why I put the decal in http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...CIMG0001-2.jpg The next box to make was the live fish well box. I went below the floor to keep the original feel of the boat. Plus I am not a hard core fisherman, and only need to keep pin fish and shrimp alive. This time I made sure the box could slide under completely made.
