Re: Materials
well today was the layup day.I tried to take as many pics as time would allow. The time constraint was tight with the laminating process. I waxed and sprayed the the mold on friday to have it set. We started off with the duratec this morning, using 1.5 gallons sprayed with a cup gun. after this we cut two layers of mat to size staggering the joint on each layer. The most important part of the lay up is the first two layers of mat, becuase you cant have any air bubbles for voids. we didnt start until the duratec got tacky.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0914.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0918.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0920.jpg we used white duratec and gray duratec as the backup http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0922.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0923.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0924.jpg these are my two friends / proffessionals that came to help me laminate the deck. after doing all the layup it was way too much work for one person. during the layup 2 of us were rolling out and 1 guy was smoothing out. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0931.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0935.jpg here we are dry fitting all the coring and marine ply. The coring is really easy to work with. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0936.jpg its definitly not rocket science laying the coring and the wood blocks we kept the coring in about an 1.5 inches around the outside and the hatches. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0938.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0939.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0940.jpg The Devilet putty has the texture of coolwhip it to gets mixed with MEKP. we applied it with a 1/4 notched trawl for laying tile. this stuf is a mess and it gets everywhere. One thing we goofed on was not marking where some of the pieces were from and after some head scratching were figured it out. After everything was set in place we back filled any voids with the putty and put a 45 degree radius on the access hatches were we had left the 1.5 inch space for the final layup. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0942.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0944.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0945.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0947.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0950.jpg well sunday am we are layng up the final 2 layers of glass. so far we have using 8 gallons of polyester which is right on what we expected. till next time |
Re: Materials
Billy-
I am overseeing the restore of an 18 that I plan on re-selling this spring. At this point it is in the fairing/priming stage. Really looking fwd to your pictures of the deck lamination. J |

Re: Materials
when will you pop it?
|
Re: Materials
Trayder, I am going to grind the flashing off tomorrow afternoon and pop it out on tuesday. I really want it cure solid before I mess with it. I am hoping it is under 200 pounds. we will see!!!
|
Re: Materials
Well I couldnt wait until tuesday to pop it out of the mold, So when I got home this afternoon I lifted one corner up and the whole deck popped up with one swift lift!! After I lifted it I put some lenghts of pvc under it to roll it around on the table. I removed all the brad nails and the frame. My buddy who helped me lay the whole deck up came over and we flipped it and cut all the flashing off and popped all the hatch molds out. I am really happy with the way the deck came out. There are no aligation or air voids in the entire deck!! I took a half gallon of water and scrub brush and cleaned most of the PVA off the deck. I am planning on cleaning and grinding anything I have to to make it fit. Also I am going to scribe around the two deck hatches 1.5" in for the cut and 1" on the two access plates for the gas tank.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0978.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0982.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0983.jpg Here are the two access plates and where the 2 rigging tubes come up thru the floor http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0985.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0986.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0987.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0990.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0994.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0996.jpg you can see where I wiped the mold release wax down on everything. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0997.jpg The only thing I would have done differently would have made the two deck hatches out of 3/4 so I could make the hatches thicker. Its not a big deal because I plan on coring the hatches with the left over divynacel and it will make the hatches really strong. very little sanding it going to be required before I paint which was one of the main objectives. Its funny the deck has the exact same texture as the malamine. I put a shipping scale under the deck and it wieghed in at 188 pounds which is under what we expected. I still have about 5 or 7 pounds of cutouts and grinding to take out. |
Re: Materials
Good work....that was a big time saver doing it that way. What do you plan on doing for the non-skid? Keep the pics coming
strick |
Re: Materials
Strick I plan on sanding it to 220 for the paint and I will probably mix in griptex or Alexseal's version of non skid. back to grinding and sanding..

deck hatches
I got some work done after my real job today :D I grinded some excess off all the way around the deck. I layed out the cut outs for the 2 deck hatches and went to work with the jig saw. I also sanded done any imperfections around the hatches . The flange is 1/4 inch thick.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN0998.jpg profile of the flange http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1001.jpg |
Re: deck hatches
very impresive, keep up the good work.

Re: dry fit
nice nice job.
thanks for sharing these pics |
Re: dry fit
You are flying. Nice work.
|
Re: dry fit
WOW!!!!!!!!!
I like it!! Jealous of the craftsmanship. |
Re: dry fit
Can we borrow you for our 21? It needs a floor ... :)
Incredible job ... AND you make it look so easy. Keep the pictures coming! |
Re: dry fit
Nice work!! Do you have to do the transom? I tlookis like it was already raised.
|
Re: dry fit
thanks for all the comments guys they keep me working everyday after work!!
tuna the last guy that had the boat had a proffesional raise the transom and then ran out of money and had some hack do the decks and the rest of the so called work. |
Re: dry fit
BTK,
I`m not an experienced rabbit. Your flying! I`m hoping to turtle across the finish line before the timekeepers go home for the weekend. Is that a backing plate I see under the well pump? Who makes that grey wire? Thx, GSF |
Re: dry fit
gsf it must be a shadow there in no backing plate under the well. the wire is made by pace marine. I bought it on ebay it is specifically meant for the bilge. Going fast with the project isnt as important as keeping a steady pace I work on it about 1 to 2 hours after work and set small goals to finish before I quit!

Re: dry fit
What are going in the holes in front of the console?
|
Re: dry fit
Zach the one hole is for the access to the livewell hoses to be hooked up and the one closest to the bow is a hatch with storage.

deck set into place
after I dry fitted the deck I lifted it back out and screwed and bolted a 1"x1" rimboard around the inner linner. I made a piece of right angle with a bunch of layers of stichmat for the transom.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1036.jpg this is the azac. all the azac is doing is sandwiching the fiberglass that I installed on top. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1038.jpg I smeared deck putty on the stringers and on the rimboard and dropped the deck in place. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1051.jpg after the deck was dropped into place the excess that squirted out the top was radiused. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1054.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1055.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1057.jpg I papered the deck off and sanded any gubers off with 40 grit. I put layer of mat, layer of 1708, small layer of mat on top. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1067.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1071.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1072.jpg during the week before I had some help I cut some holes in the console. I got the battery switch box in from SSI here is the template http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1040.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1041.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1044.jpg I drilled the holes for the rod holders to http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1043.jpg I fiberglassed some marine ply in the console for rigging, wires and saltwater washdown. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1047.jpg I ordered a whole bunch of sanding paper and fairing putty for this week to come. |
Re: deck set into place
Looks great. I noticed from another post that you are putting a Hammerhead livewell in front of the console. How much space will be between the console and the livewell? Do you plan on doing anywork to make the livewell flush with the console?
I know these questions will be answered in a matter of time, I was just wondering because I am undergoing the same process currently and was looking to have Tommy build me a livewell to be used as the leaning post. I'm also curious as to why you decided not to have it double as a leaning post. Keep up the good work. |
Re: deck set into place
Hey Zach I am using one of Tommy's livewells from hammerhead boatworks. I had a couple of small boats with livewells in front of the console with no problems. I put the livewell in front of the console for a couple of reasons. for the weight I didnt want water coming in the scuppers when the livewell is full. It will also act as my trim tabs. I have a shut off on the drain and can regulate how much water I want in it. We throw the cast net in the bow and it is easier loading the well from there. I have a 1600 gph pump so by the time it gets the bow with the head pressure it is 1200 gph. Also my girlfriend likes the bench seat :D

fairing and sanding
I have been busy the last 2 weeekends I made a deal with the guy that helped me laminate my deck that he could use my garage to lay one up for his 31 convertible.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1060.jpg recessed drainage http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1062.jpg curve on the transom http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1073.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1076.jpg 4 coats of wax 2 coats pva 1 gelcoat 2 layers of mat for skin coat 1 layer of mat 1 layer of core mat balsa core layer of stitch mat and done http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1078.jpg got some stuff done on the 20' too! I back filled the edge around the new deck with dynaglass with short hair http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1093.jpg after that I quick faired the small leftover area http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1084.jpg I also had to rebuild the back peice for the rigging between the angle of the transom it wasnt big enough here is the duratec applied http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1081.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1092.jpg everything is really boring at this point and no one likes sanding and fairing thats it for now I am hoping by the weekend to be finish sanding the hull for primer. |
Re: fairing and sanding
:D you guys are getting pretty good at that :D

Re: fairing and sanding
Stricks thanks it helps to know you are watching the post :D did you find any easy way to sand the quick fair? I ran out of quick fair again so waiting for more to come in.
|
Re: fairing and sanding
I have been using the quick fair...I have been using a palm sander with 60 grit to take down the heavy stuff and then 150 grit after that! I really like this stuff sand nice...Are you gettinf pinholes in it if so what are you doing about the pinholes?
|
Re: fairing and sanding
The quick fair should sand easily. I usually use 220 on a orbital or palm sander. Also I will sand by hand for finish work.

motor is here!
got my motor on thursday. It is a 2005 140 suzuki 4 stroke. I had it trucked to one of my warehouses(much cheaper trucking to a commercial address)
I fitted the riging box in the corner and deck puttied it on the inside and double bias to hold it in place . waited for that to kick and put a radius on the outside with some dyna-glass. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1094.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1095.jpg here is the box dry fitted http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1097.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1096.jpg I am going to get a bunch of work done tomorrow hopefully till next time |
Re: motor is here!
Nice work and you will love that motor with $4+ gas prices.

Re: motor is here!
Hi Billy
I noticed that you have exposed plywood on top of your transom where the motor would sit. What are you going to cover it with? The previous owner of my boat installed an aluminum plate over the transom to cover up the cracked fiberglass and exposed wood. I have to replace my transom and was not sure what cloth can make a sharp wrap aroung the top without getting air pockets. |
Re: motor is here!
Tashmoo I took the grinder an hit both sides of the transom about 3 inches down on both sides. I cut some mat to lenght. THe first peice was 3 inches wide and the next was 5 inches wide . I wet them out on a piece of cardboard and let them sit for a couple of minutes for the resin to start breaking down the starches in the mat. then I laid the skinner one on first rolled it a little bit then set the wider one on and rolled it all out. Once mat is wetted out it can make pretty sharp turns before the strands start popping out. after it set up I hit it with 40 grit to knock and goobers off than started fairing it out with quick fair. Dont use cloth by itself you will be able to peel it off after it sets up. I wiped the surface down real good with acetone before I laid the glass up this helps the polyester resin absorbed in the plywood.

Re: motor is here!
its hard to keep the motivation going when I hate fairing and sanding but I am still making progress,
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1105.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1108.jpg got the transom top reglassed http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1100.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1115.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1113.jpg here is the rough opening for the scupper It is glassed all around and I started fairing it in http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1110.jpg had some leftover cabinets from a house renovation and they were the right price :D so in the begining of the week I worked on straightening everything out in my garage. I couldnt deal with the mess anymore. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1118.jpg |
Re: motor is here!
Excellent project. I don't know how I missed it! The deck lamination is top notch. Thanks for shareing.

sanding and sanding and sanding
well after ordering another boat load of supplies from Merton Fiberglass in MA.(no pun intended!) Joe has helped me out alot during this project, He is always willing to answer questions, I got started on some other projects . I got some MORE sanding done and fairing.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1121.jpg started building the hatches and the access plates for the fuel sending unit and the pick up tube http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1124.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1125.jpg Duratec applied and first 2 skin coats of mat http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1132.jpg here you can see where I put the wood circles in for the latches http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1134.jpg after I applied another layer of mat, 3 layers of biaxial I layed out where the latches for the divynecel coring. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1135.jpg the divynacel dry fitted. I know I didnt take many pics when I was laying up the deck so I figured I would take a bunch of pics of how to layer the coring http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1138.jpg here is the tile trowel again http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1142.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1140.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1141.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1144.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1145.jpg They make a tool to bed the the coring but a Fein multimaster works fine to work the devilet putty up in the coring http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1143.jpg after I layed a layer of mat and 2 more layers of biaxal cloth I popped them out of the mold and cut MOST of the flashing off with a table saw. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1146.jpg I did some research and bought a diamond tipped router wheel for my router from Bodi and went to work. This bit works perfect. You router around the top and it gives you a perfect flat surface on the bottom as it did. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1148.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1149.jpg here is the flashing getting cut off http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1151.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1152.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1153.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1154.jpg I drilled the inner hole for the latches ans did a little dry fit. I used a peice of 1/4 inch poplar ply for the circles http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1156.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1158.jpg I dry fitted the hatch to make sure it was going to fit! If I were to do it over I wouldnt have use the 1/2 wax radius putty I would have used the 1/4 to have a tigher fit. I can do it on the next boat! http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1159.jpg In the dry fit I still have to take a little off the bottom still to make it flush with the deck. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1161.jpg I got my livewell from Tommy at Hammerhead boatworks, it is a really nice setup. Here are some pics http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1126.jpg drains on both sides http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1131.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1130.jpg He also put a 1 1/8 fitting in for me for more volume http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1129.jpg that is it for now I am trying to have the boat ready for primer after the weekend. till next time |
Re: sanding and sanding and sanding
great pictures. I am about to start my deck and transom replacments. Joe at Mertons is a great help and I am about to order my supplies from. I've known him for over 20 years.
Your pictures really help. I like the hatches but was wondering how you will keep water from going into bilge. |
Re: sanding and sanding and sanding
the 1/4 flange that is on the deck side of the opening is going to get sanded on both sides of the middle so the middle portion will be a high spot in the when the latches on bith sides are swung closed it will pull the hatch down. I also ordered high grade gasket material for the hatchs to form a tight seal around the hatch.
|
Re: sanding and sanding and sanding
Hey BTK . I need some gasket material and some dogs. What are you using? Nice work BTW.
Thx, GFS |
Re: sanding and sanding and sanding
Those latches are really nice. So the Multimaster was used to vibrate the bedding into the coring? Were is the bait tank going to be installed? great work on the hatches!
