Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
There is deep enough water around most of the island, you may have to wade through 1' of water for a little ways but it is pretty well protected. There are many spots you can pull very close to the beach , just bring a stern anchor and all will be well. Any who want to come to the island even w/out a boat no problem, We canhave rides for anyone coming, and if we do decide on Durney we will have at least one maybe more Waverunners for fun and tubing etc, for all to enjoy, and we will bring out a large propane grill and tables, and probably a generator if anyone needs it.

Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
ok i like durney key too. a bit far of a tow but by then ill have the truck set up for towing better with helper bangs and c-notches in the frame so it doesnt bottom out anymore and will probably have trailer set up for less tongue weight. sorry about the run on sentence there. i looked at google for durney key and it shows a little island off the mainland? is that the right one?? http://www.clubkayak.com/greenwave/t...n&location=151

Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
Thats it, please just move the boat back a little, you probably have way too much tough weight and it will tow much better. Very few vehiches need extra stuff to tow a 20 SeaCraft they just aren't that heavy if the trailer is set up correctly. Max is like 2500 lbs with a bunch of crap in it so set it up right and see.
Hey Bush, I'll try and bring the Big Ol'Fat Hound Dog to keep Shadow company |
Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
there is way too much tongue weight on my trailer. even though my truck didnt come from the factory with a tow package a fullsize truck should not squat that much. ive already moved it back as much as i can. now i need to move the bunks back another 3-4 inches and i have about 3 inches past the transom.. only problem is the winch stand. i cant move that anymore.

Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
Is there a chance the axle is too far back? Moving it forward 3-6 inches can make a large impact on reducing tongue weight.

Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
ive looked at the axles before. i cant move them forward at all. it was my first option. they are mounted right where the trailer frame bends together towards the front.
egg, i was going to move the bunks back because i know ive gotta move the boat back, i heard that its not good for the transom to not rest on bunks. maybe i can try to learn how to weld on my bow stop/winch stand. |

Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
Checked out PI and it was pretty nice, the dock is very nice for overnight dockage. Of course right at LWI inlet but not alot to do around there in the ICW headed south, didn't go north much. On the water fuel is all 93 and very expensive 3.50 to 4 a galloon, a beer and a couple shots of Tequila at Sailfish Marina is kinda an eye popper too :D I think for what we kinda do Durney Key may be better with the islands and beaches around it, plus Shadow and the big 'ol fat hound dog could come.
Another nice factor for Durney is the big rental house very close by for folks not camping too |
Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options

Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
Hey Danny,
We pissed off the local constabulary while power drifting for livies just outside the fixed bridge in the Boynton cut. They waved us on , but we stayed to get another dozen or so. It was rippin in at a good clip and we were close to the north jetty and the rocks a few times. {Please don`t try this at home. These are highly medicated patients from the most highly regarded sanitarium in the industry.} It`s been a strange May. 2nd wettest on record. There were early storms all around again, so we hit the shallow reefs and released the prisoners. Got hit hard twice right off the bat. Cut offs. Big kings , some 40 + have been here , but we wanted Muttons. I thought about switching to wire, but I had to be stubborn instead of settling for what was hitting. We were also back drifting at times which still confuses me. Let me know if I`ve left out any excuses. Going out this weekend. We really needed the rain, but I`ve got a serious Dolphin jones going and I hope to finally run n gun. The weather pattern seems to be back to normal now. Anyone else going out this weekend? Cheers, GFS |
Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
As soon as I leave trolled from Boynton to LWI with Susan on Monday with a couple very large Bonita's, caught in a downpour at the inlet and ran into Sailfish soaked. Knock the chill off with a couple shots of Cuervo and a beer, back up the ICW after it stopped. Wednesday Denny came out and we trolled Boynton to LWI, wore Denny out on some Bonita- caught in a 30mph downdraft from an offshore storm moving SW back in, 5 miles out - fun ride, soaked with saltwater this time. Started south in the ICW following the rain south and a Severe Thunderstorm meets us heading NE - back to Sailfish and wait it out, again. Keep in mind these storms were coming at 1 to 2 in the afternoon, so not much time to fish any day, and they stayed around most of the evening. Thursday take a cruise down to Boca, stopped at her brothers in Delray on the way, get to the Boca inlet, big nasty coming again - try to run back north -HA- caught us and I jumped under a bridge and fought 50 mph winds and rain wiping around the bulkhead - another fun afternoon, brother came for dinner and no rain = good. Sandy was back Fri and we tried drifting but the kings wouldn't let you fish and the cats won't even eat them. Storms started building again so we had to cut the trolling short but with the west wind most of the week very very little weed and very few flyers. Some fish were caught well offshore but the storms would build right at the coast. Put right at 279 miles per the GPS for the week and really had a great time.
Thanks again to Sandy for letting me leave my trailer and I have found a guy from here that needed a place to leave his boat over there for 4 days so I think I made Sandy a 150 for that - hope that works for ya. |
Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
Lets Stick a Fork in this and plan it out, What dates sound good to everyone? How about Sept 11-13?
|
Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
That's pretty close to peak hurricane season, so some risk of getting blown out. It would be really buggy here at that time of year, but maybe ok that far north. What time of year do the first fronts come thru up there to kill off the bugs? I'm thinking October might be better? Just finished doing brakes and a major tune-up on the ol' Dodge, so I'm good to go whenever it is!
|
Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
I like Durney Key, and I think early October best. Temps have started to cool, and mosquito and sandgnats (noseeums) are fewer as well. That makes a huge difference for the wife and daughter.

Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
Great point, October (just not Halloween ;) ) Sounds best!
|
Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
oct 23,24,25 ???
|
Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
Didn't think bugs were a big issue there?
but Oct is the best of weather in fla - we don't get fronts until well into Nov usually |
Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
Sounds good, And you are correct bugs are not a big issue on Durney as there is usually enough of a breeze to keep them away, and a little spray works well also. We have a very quiet 6kw generator we will bring in case anyone has power needs. We will also bring a full size propane grill. and some large fold out tables. and chairs. Hey Blue we have been useing the heck out of those pliers they are Awesome!!!!
|
Re: Fall 2009 Gathering Time and Location Options
That should cover the grill issue for everybody, which is very nice. Bugs wouldn't be an issue for me anyway, they'd all be down at Danny's working on that tender stuff, bug filet.
Wholesale Gas is down .03 by the way |

Spent July 4th at Durney it was AWESOME! No bugs, no crowding, just good old FUN!!! On the way in we passed a barge that had a Fireworks display going off. My eyebrows have almost grown back..... :o

Re: Fall 2000 Gathering Time and Location Options
Danny, I was planning to go, but we have a local conflict that weekend. There's a gathering of the old offshore powerboat racers in Abacoa that weekend (OFF2009, Old Farts Forever!) that the Moeslys have been invited to. They went to this event last year in Ft. Lauderdale area and had a great time. Skip and Carla have invited Pat and I to tag along with them. They're supposed to have a bunch old race boats on display in the adjoining park and also a bunch of old video's. Carla called me today and said her folks were still planning to go, health permitting of course. I was hoping to organize a gathering of old Moesly SeaCraft owners in conjunction with it, as I know of 6 guys who used to work at P&W that owned bowriders, 21's or 27's. However I think all but a couple of them will be out of town, so not sure we can pull that off. Denny

Re: Fall 2000 Gathering Time and Location Options
Is there a place with protected overnight parking for trailers within 30 miles (preferably south) of the island?
|
Re: Fall 2000 Gathering Time and Location Options
There is a ramp down the street from my house, and you can park the trailer overnight either right at or just next door it is fairly safe, we not had any theft issues in 15 years. we are about a 7 min walk from the ramp, just a few blocks. and it is only a few miles away from Durney.

Re: Fall 2000 Gathering Time and Location Options
Many thanks! I just bought the boat and will be doing a fair amount of work. If I can get it near done, I'd love to come.
