I hate that you had so much trouble, but, looks like you almost have it whipped. The water sure was pretty up your way this morning.

Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
Yeah getting there, got some minor details to finish but hopefully she turns out as good as she looks when I close my eyes.
The weather up here has just been ridiculous, its driving me crazy since I can't use the boat. Got to me tonight and I had to catch a fish. Went out back to our pond and after a few casts: http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00413-4777.jpg Now that I know what catching a fish feels like again, back to work. :D |
Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
WARNING this is a long overdue update and contains more images than should be allowed in a single post, I apologize in advanced for this (but really though, is there every enough boat porn? :D ).
Boat was brought back to my driveway after taking it over to the painter. He noticed some things that we hadn't seen that needed to be addressed before moving on so to work we went. Some things might have been overkill but better safe than sorry. For one all the old hardware holes on the cap we had just taped the bottoms and filled with thickened epoxy then faired. He mentioned that he'd seen people do that before and after a while the epoxy shrinks and its visible in the paint job, recommended to grind out a little around them and put a layer of glass on top. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00418-4779.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00418-4778.jpg This was loads of fun on the 200 holes in the console. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4811.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4809.jpg A drill with a 60 grit wheel on the end was a good tool for grinding out a little square on each hole. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00418-4783.jpg These were then faired and sanded. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00418-4784.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00418-4785.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4823.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4824.jpg Also noticed some spider cracks on the hull sides that we hadn't seen before. These were ground out and then covered with a layer of 1708 and 6oz cloth. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00418-4793.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00418-4791.jpg And then faired. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4852.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4854.jpg I also decided to switch from the square butt style hinge up front to the strap style hinge. So the recessed hinge cut outs were filled. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4816.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4819.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4818.jpg Recessed areas also filled on hatches. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4804.jpg I have purchased a new stainless gas fill that has a 3 hole pattern vs the 4 hole of the original. The underside was backed with a glassed piece of 3/8" marine ply and then was filled with epoxy. This sealed the hole well and will provide some meat for the new fill to mount in vs just glass. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4815.jpg Then more of the usual fairing and pin hole filling. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4825.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4826.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4827.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4828.jpg The boat was then taken over to the warehouse to start the paint process. First coat was some Awlgrip Epoxy Sprayable Fairing Compound (which was picked up off the sale rack at West Marine for $13!). This is a very thick (20 mils dry) coat that fills A LOT of imperfections. We spot sprayed the trouble areas on the outside of the hull but my interior has been beat to hell over the past 36 years and it got a complete coat. Below are some pictures after we'd been sanding on it some. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00507-4952.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00507-4953.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00507-4954.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00507-4955.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00507-4956.jpg We sanded that down smooth and then put a coat of Awl-Quik Sanding Surfacer. This is a very pale yellow, but smooth coat that can be used as a surfacer for 545 primer or top coat can be directly applied. Awl-Grip recommends for best distinction of image to use Awl-Quik with 545 on top, so that's what we're doing. The Awl-Quik is currently being lightly sanded with 180 to prepare for 545. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00513-4963.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00513-4965.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00513-4966.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00513-4967.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00513-4970.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00513-4973.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00513-4974.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00513-4976.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00513-4981.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00513-4984.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00513-4985.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00513-4988.jpg This is where we stand now, almost done sanding the Awl-Quik. Getting 545 on it this week and hopefully topcoat early next week. Then she starts to get put back together. Which reminds me, I've been picking up boat jewelry since she's close to being finished. The amount has almost tripled since I took this pic but I'll get a more up to date pick once I start putting everything on her. She's getting new stainless EVERYTHING. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00425-4879.jpg |
Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
hey man if u dont mind, pass along your painters number to me in a PM or something.... my hull is getting soda blasted this winter and i need a person that can paint. im doing the same by useing awlgrip on the bottom (stored on trailer) thanks

Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
Looking great!!! Instead of checking your work out, I guess I'll have to see it on the water. I'll be keeping a check on your progress. Maybe you can show me around your VA playground sometime. Keep up the good work!

Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
Been working on a logo for the boat to go on the hull sides. My SeaCraft stickers on the sides are gonna be the newer style with the metallic gold outline on black. I think the combo looks great on sea foam boats as seen here on this 2001 21':
http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...eafoamGold.JPG So I've decided to play on that. Downloaded the logo from the Brands of the World website and used the Sea from that logo to ensure the correct font/spacing/etc. Playing off the computer themed name decided to use binary (1s and 0s) as the interior of the ++'s. These will be visible up close but fade away from a distance and just look filled in. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...t2010/logo.jpg The gold will obviously not be that yellow, but rather match the gold from the SeaCraft stickers, and the white will be the hull side so all white will be sea foam. Comments? Suggestions? One comment that I got from friends is that it looked like it said Seatt, what do you guys think? |
Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
I think it looks cool! I don't see the 'Seatt'. I see what you see. Bottom line... it's yours to make what you want of it. You'll probably have to explain it to a few, but, it'll catch on. If it starts to gnaw at you, slide the ++ over a little more for some separation.

Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
The illusive 4' Gigginhauler. One of my friends dad, RIP, decided he wanted something to haul his flounder gigging gear in and made the mold many years ago. It's gelcoated, but I camo'ed it for duck hunting. Not that exciting, but, I snickered everytime I posted, waiting for somebody to bite. All in the name of fun! :D

Uncleboo - that thing is awesome! and the new bling is niceeee!
Thanks for all the support guys. Finished sanding last night, boat is getting cleaned today and then 545'd tonight or tomorrow morning. So close to topcoat I can taste it! wtenglish - I cant wait to see her with all her jewelry on either! New nav light arrived last night, looks slick and very bright! Starting to layout the rewire, trying to do a quality job on her so I have as little headaches in the future as possible.
Threw this together, anyone see anything wrong (I am by no means an electrician)? (Click on the image for a larger/more readable size) http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...ical-small.jpg |

Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
I am by no means an electrician either, and you seem to have put time, effort, and therefore thought into this by the looks of your drawing. If I'm reading the drawing right, you have 2 bilges, but only 1 wired directly to a battery. I wired both of mine with switches each to their own battery. Hopefully taking a dead battery out of the equation. The other thing I noticed was your electronics are wired to the master switch. I read somewhere that electronics should be wired directly to a battery. Wiring where you have it will eliminate voltage drop due to load or resistance, but it may pick up noise from any number of things including alternators.
Again, I'm only spewing what I did and what I read. |
Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
I would put a switch(on-off-auto) on the bilge pumps as well. My thoughts are that when the boats on a trailer and you get frequent heavy rains like here in South Florida you could end up with your pump running unnecessarily and draining your batteries.

Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
Hey SeaPlusPlus,
Amazing project – your posts are awesome. I did my own wiring when I had my 23 and was overall happy. I’m not an electrician and I only follow the law of common sense but your drawing looks good. My comments are purely based off of personal opinion. • Pole Switch instead of Rocker - I used rocker switches on my project however in hindsight I may have considered pole switches. I think they are more weather resistant since they have an encapsulating rubber boot on them. I like the look/feel of rockers but I had one get a little moody and I’m thinking the poles would be even more robust. You can get the push button circuit breakers with sealed rubber boots also. • On board Battery charger – I didn’t see one on your drawing. I really liked having one. I prolongs the life of the battery and is easy to just plug in when the boats not in use. • No direct battery connections - I’m sure a lot of people will disagree but on a trailer boat I don’t like to hard wire anything to the battery except the switch and charger (i.e. no bilge pump). If I leave it in the water I just leave the switch on. I don’t like chancing I’ll get a stray drawl. I’m probably just paranoid though. • Crimp tool - I used all heat shrink and even bought Ancor’s crimp tool. It’s basically a crimp tool that the crimp is a little wider so it doesn’t cut into the heat shrink and negate the point. http://www.marinco.com/product/singl...p-ratchet-tool • Exit Strategy - Last, think of how you would disconnect everything if you ever had to take the console off. Perhaps having your fuse and bus bar close to the rigging tube so you could simply unscrew and lift the console off. Most of the wires runs inside the console would simply stay zip tied inside. Good luck! Andy PS: I’m a Software Engineer so I get the Sea ++ innuendo (at least I think I do). Not sure if you’ve explained it to the non-computer-programmers on the forum. http://www.bessio.com/seacraft/P1010309.JPG http://www.bessio.com/seacraft/P1010306.JPG http://www.bessio.com/seacraft/P1010311.JPG |
Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
Blue197320 - came from Ebay $125 + $7.99 shipping I shopped around for a while and this was the best price I found. Bought it on a Tuesday and received it Thursday night ground from Fl to Va.
Tucker - I miss labeled that, only have 1 bilge pump, its float switch will be wired to a battery. I have my electronics wired to the switch so that when I leave my boat I can just turn the batteries off and not worry about a stray draw. Ran them like that before and never saw a problem with interference but thanks for the info! makade - I think I might do that, Instead of getting a On-Off-Momentary switch for the pump I'll get an On-Off-On and then wire the float switch to the bottom with a direct connect to the battery from there. That way like you said when its sitting in my driveway I can just turn it to off and let the water drain through transom vs chancing the pump turning on. I always check it after a big rain anyways. BigLew - thanks for the input/positive comments! saltyfish7 - That's one of the cleanest wiring jobs I've seen! That's what I'm hoping to end up with, something as clean as that. I already have the rocker switch so it will have to do, hopefully it lasts, was damn expensive. Charger sounds like a good investment, will look into that. Got my 21' of LED rope for under the gunwhale. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...redledrope.jpg |
Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
Just had a thought regarding supplies like wire, ring connectors, etc...
You may want to check out Pacer Marine, they manufacture their own wire and its a fraction of the cost of Ancor products. I'm lucky that they have a warehouse locally, but even to ship they could save you a ton of money. You do have to open a account with them to pay with a credit card, but they just make it in your name. Oh and I strongly agree with the suggestion of getting a quality crimper, I got a nice ratcheting one designed for insulated terminals at pacer for around fifty bucks. |
Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
Here's the link http://www.pacergroup.net/ , they do have everything you would need.
Also here's a pic of my mess. I used the fasteners from the cushion on the front of my console to thrubolt a piece of starboard to mount everything. Its hard to fit everything in a little boat (mine's a 18). Also I have my shelf set up so its easy to remove and I can squeeze into my console for adding stuff etc.I actually sit in there indian style, and I'm not a little guy! Also I have my batteries side by side directly under the picture, which allows room in the front under the seat for lifejackets and stuff. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_Ogunguroops/S9...card%20512.jpg |
Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
FYI... I have been doing some rewiring myself. I found this ratcheting crimp designed for heat shrink terminals. Works great so far and hard to beat the price

Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
Invest in a GOOD crimper. Long handles equal less fatigue. A buddy that does industrial wiring told me to use connectors and heat shrink - not heat shrink connectors. The reason is you get better quality connectors and you can use the heat shrink with the adhesive adding to the strength of the connection. I also used coppercoat on the wires to keep a good connection in the crimp.
Good luck and have fun. |
Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
Well, after missing the Stripers I think I'm ready to get wet this weekend if the weather cooperates. New steering, control cables, and replaced the scuppers. Silly me, I thought these would be easy projects until I found the guy before me used some sort of fiberglass tube for the scuppers and really made a mess of the transmission linkage. I now have brass scupper tubes and redesigned the linkage and with any luck it will all work as it is supposed to.

Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
Sorry for the lack of update. Took the misses on a cruise to The Bahamas two weeks ago and was hacking my lungs up from cruise ship SARS or something all last week.
http://www.noahbeach.com/images/sarahcruise.jpg The boat was 545'd right before I left and then sat for a week and a half. Have a couple pictures from 2 weeks ago (crappy pics from cell phone, keep forgetting camera). http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...45exterior.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...45interior.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...545hatches.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...545leaning.jpg The boat has now been sanding completely with 320 and is smooth as a babies bottom. Her interior is taped up and is ready to have her hull sides and bottom sprayed with Sea Foam tomorrow. I'll post some pics soon. :D |
Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
My boat is green! Finally after sanding, sanding, sanding, and some more sanding, she has color. Very happy with how her sides and bottom turned out.
Some pics: http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00617-5023.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00617-5025.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00617-5026.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00617-5029.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00617-5030.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00617-5031.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00617-5034.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00617-5038.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00617-5039.jpg Also got some more boat jewelry and electrical supplies. (4) more stainless strap hinges for the two forward hatches since I converted those from butt hinges to strap, and (2) new hinges for the baitwell (the 5 holed ones). A new stainless Shakespeare ratchet antenna mount for my 8' VHF antenna and a Shakespeare flange mount for my XM weather antenna. 100' each of 16 gauge black and red tinned wire, a new 8 switch panel, (3) SPDT on-off-on switches to replace some of the switches on the panel, a 12 fuse panel for devices that don't need switching. Also got a new Standard Horizon Quest-X VHF radio and the RAM3 second station that goes with it. That way I'll have VHF communication ability from on the cobia tower. Also pictured is the pop-up LED bow light I talked about earlier. Tonight I'm going over to tape off her outsides and wipe down her insides/console/hatches so that they can be sprayed Matterhorn White this weekend. So close to wrapping up this project I can taste it, and good thing too, I'm dying to fish. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00617-5043.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00617-5046.jpg |

Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
Man it looks great, makes me want to learn how to do fiberglass work and start on my Seacraft, i was just wondering if you have any pictures of when you redone your transom thanks
|
Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
Thanks for all the compliments guys. I'm really happy she's finally starting to come together.
IslandRunner - unfortunately no, and I really regret not documenting it too. FWIW though, its 2 layers of 3/4" Bluewater Coosa. I did it from the inside, leaving the outer layer of glass intact. The inside is 5 layers of 1708 biax and I put glassed coosa knees on two stringers going about 1/3 up the transom so it would provide more support on the transom. The inside of the boat was painted, and all the hatches/console were painted. The hatches turned out awesome, couldn't be happier. The console looks very good as well with the exception of a small hair in the paint right on the dash, but fortunately its right about where my steering wheel goes so I'm 99% sure it will be covered. Some pics: http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00622-5060.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00622-5064.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00622-5066.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00622-5067.jpg The inside of the boat on the other hand is not as good. Apparently I'm blind cause I missed a lot of pin holes along the top of the gunwales that I should have seen in the 545 that glare right in your face in topcoat (to my defense its very dimly lit in there, but no excuses). Rather than just running with it and having it bother me I've talked to my painter and he suggested using a razor blade and some Evercoat filler with the white hardener and going around and filling all the pin holes then sanding down the inside with 3M Scotch Bright sanding pads to take the shine off the top coat and then we can shoot it again and it will have a good mechanical bond between coats. At this point all the holes have been filled/sanded smooth again and I'm working on getting the shine off the rest of the boat. Sadly too cause it looks good in shiny white minus the little holes. We'll be shooting take two of white top coat this weekend. |
Re: Spring Project(s) 74 20SF
Another update. Boat left the paint warehouse last week and went to S-S Marine, t-top fabricators. They did some final measurements and drilled the support holes in the console and drilled and tapped the holes in the plates in the deck. Top goes on tomorrow (Tuesday) so picked the boat up Friday and brought it home to work on her over the weekend. Didn't get a terrible lot done between the heat and the summer showers they we had Sat & Sun, but managed to get some, and get some shots of her outside.
First time she's been home in a long time (notice the new driveway, 230' x 13' wide drive + 60' radius circle + 40' x 30' boat parking went from asphalt to all pavers) http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00716-5083.jpg First things first, gotta get the decals on http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00716-5084.jpg Couple of glamour shots. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00716-5085.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00716-5086.jpg http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00716-5088.jpg Got the console and the tank hatch screwed in, console has (29) 1-1/2" #12 stainless screws that hold her to the glassed wood pad on the floor. You could probably pick up the boat by it. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00716-5091.jpg Got the forward hatches in and the black trim around the rod holders and anchor locker. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00716-5094.jpg Looking back http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00716-5095.jpg One of the holes S-S drilled and tapped, can see the 3/8" aluminum plate in there. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00716-5096.jpg Shot of the stern. Armstrong plate installed. Didn't snap a pic but those hatches are hinged in now, tape was temporary for driving down the highway. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00716-5101.jpg Can't believe how different it looks from the before haha. http://yuengling.voicechatservers.co...00307-4622.jpg That's all I have for now. T-Top installed tomorrow, and you bet I'll have some pics of that. Still got a long list of to-dos to put her back together, the first of which is non-skid, its a death trap right now with any water on the deck. |

Thanks for the kind words guys.
Boat is back at my house with the t-top on and boy does she look sexy. http://www.noahbeach.com/hosting/Sea...00722-5106.jpg As it said on my contract with the builder its a "Custom Cobia Tower", and if you can't spot a cobia from up there you can spot one. It's a little taller than I imagined but I had it installed only to spot from/troll from in good conditions, would never consider running from up there. I'm really happy with how she looks. The back two legs of the crow's nest disconnect and it folds forward for trailering (2" below required height but I ain't going under anything with only 2" clearance). :D Boat load more pics: http://www.noahbeach.com/hosting/Sea...00722-5103.jpg http://www.noahbeach.com/hosting/Sea...00722-5105.jpg http://www.noahbeach.com/hosting/Sea...00722-5110.jpg http://www.noahbeach.com/hosting/Sea...00722-5115.jpg http://www.noahbeach.com/hosting/Sea...00722-5116.jpg Ebox http://www.noahbeach.com/hosting/Sea...00722-5117.jpg http://www.noahbeach.com/hosting/Sea...00722-5119.jpg http://www.noahbeach.com/hosting/Sea...00722-5134.jpg http://www.noahbeach.com/hosting/Sea...00722-5135.jpg http://www.noahbeach.com/hosting/Sea...00722-5136.jpg http://www.noahbeach.com/hosting/Sea...00722-5143.jpg The tower has (6) legs that bolt into the floor, these go into the 3/8" Aluminum plate that was epoxied under the deck. Then there are (4) connection points on the console (two on front two on sides), each one has a backing plate. http://www.noahbeach.com/hosting/Sea...00722-5112.jpg The two connections on the sides of the console are open on the inside and are the cable chases. http://www.noahbeach.com/hosting/Sea...00722-5111.jpg Now that all the subcontracted out work is done on her, its time for me to put her back together again.
