Re: Outboard Options for Classic 20

Sorry its been so long without an update! As is usual when dealing with government grants, we've experienced yet more delays due to funding. So this SeaCraft has still not been launched! I swear, it feels like our ETec warranty is going to expire before this thing ever gets used!

So... I have one big complaint already about the ETec. One of the selling points of the ETec was the awesome 5 year warranty. Well, our submitted warranty came back flagged by Evinrude's bean counters. Apparently, the 5 year warranty is only for "recreational" use. No matter that the outboard is registered to the "Sports and Recreation Dept." at Cal State Long Beach; it is a State university and we only get the "governmental use" warranty - 2 years. So they consider that we will be using this outboard on par with the Lifeguard, Coast Guard, and Police boats. Sheesh.

How has the 90 etec worked out? Performance and WOT? I'm thinking about repowering my 1974 20'SF (original 20" transom) with either Etec 90 or 115. I would like to use 90 if adequate power in order to save weight.

We have a 90 eTec on a 19 Bowrider and a 20 CC. Both are perfect matches to these hulls with 13-¾" x 15" props. Ideally, 5300 WOT around 35 MPH+ depending on load. Great economy on both fuel and oil.

Thanks for your input. Great to hear! Currently have a tired 1990 Johnson 115 on boat and the Etec 90 I believe is comparable in weight. The Etec 115 weights 375 to 390#. 55 to 70# additional weight.
Also, I believe my 115 new didn't push the boat much faster than 35. Are they comparable actual HP?
In comparison to Etec 90, is the additional weight of Etec 115 worth the extra HP?
