Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
After almost a week straight of rain, and took a break to go 4wheeling up north I got to start the transom layup. There isnt many pictures as we were hustling to get it all done before the sun came over the garage roof.
After the board was in we used the 1/2in bolts and a couple well placed screws to hold the sandwich together. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PA111486.jpg Then I dropped the corner boxes on and trimmed to fit. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PA111487.jpg I tore the wood braces off last night and started grinding on the original skin in order to begin the layup and smoothing over of the outside skin. I also started cutting the last pieces of the inner most skin and strips of glass to tab into the hull sides. After everything drys off real nice in the sun Ill get another big layup done. |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
looking good. how did you get the core in there with the two storage boxes in the way? what bracket do you plan on useing?
|
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
If you look close the boxes have been cut out. I just threw them back in there to check the trimming I need to do so they fit right.
I will be using a Hermco bracket The inner transom is done, its got 2 layers of Matt, and one of roven, then I tabbed 6in out on each side and the bottom just after these pictures were taken. There will be a ton of 'fine tuning' the fit of other things around all this structural work thats going to take a bunch of time. But it feels good to get some major strides checked off the list. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PA131488.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PA131489.jpg |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Wildman,
You may want to hit it with one more layer of structural glass (rov/biax). I used 2 1708 and 1 rovin plus tabing and knees on my inside. Others may have opinions on this? Are you going to do some knees? |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Yep it will have "knees" of some sort. The original stringer boxes have been cut WAY back, those will be brought back and continued up on an angle to where the underside of the deck will be. I want to avoid cutting the deck around the knees as there will be no way to hide them if I do.
I am planning on chopping in some PVC chases in that area missing from the stringer boxes too, just haven't figured them out yet. That 1708 you are using is 10z total right? my roven is 24oz alone. I will also be adding a layer of 24oz roven and 2 layers of 1.5oz cloth to the open area (where I havent glassed yet) on the outside of the transom. Maybe tonight. All said and done the complete transom should be 2in+ |

Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Thats not a bad idea, I was worried about floor support back there as the stringers are very far apart. I had planned on running a piece of 1/2 cut PVC under the floor but that shelf would be much stronger/more support.
|
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
If I am not mistaken....1708= 17 oz biax with .8 oz of mat. I think Chucks and the Wildfire setups are some of the better thought out transom fill and caps :) I tried to do something similar but bailed due to my skill level.
Sounds like you have a plan keep up the good work. |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
I do have a plan but I am always open to more suggestions! Trying to do something RIGHT once takes a TON of fore-thought and a great deal of stealing other peoples examples.
I would like to take a look at your boat some time this fall if you dont mind. |

I'll show you all my mistakes pm sent give me a buzz.

Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
I have been bouncing between the boat and my landcruiser projects. I did get the outside all glassed up and now its time to dish out all the existing holes in the transom and patch them up too.
I got the center stringer shaped, sanded and glued down with some cabosil and resin. While I was at it, I used the thickened resin to soften the joint between the vertical on the stringer and the angle inside the hull. This should make a nice easy layup with a minimum concern for air pockets forming while I am working. Then I ran out of resin. [:p] So I am going to get all the strips of 1708 cut for the layup of the stringer. |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Figured I would update a little bit. My center stringer is glued in with cabosil and waiting on glass. The transom is completly glassed and waiting for filler, and sanding.
For a while I was going pretty well then it started to rain. So instead of fighting the rain I went on to do another project in the mean time. I have had this FJ40 for 4.5years and been meaning to get to it for the last 2. While I am waiting for a buddy who does shrink wraping to get over here and build me a 'tent' over the seacraft I painted, bed linered, and assembled the land crusier. I have also stripped my Mako22 hull, and sold it, keeping the T top, leaning post, motor and console. In a couple weeks when my tent is ready to go ill haul the land cruiser up to a good friend in VT who owns a landcruiser shop and have him wire it, and make it run! After its outa the shop Ill work on the SC again. [:D] In the mean time here is some Truck Porn [8D] Bed liner is Upol spray in black on the bottom and color matched on the inside. Trucks color is Toyota 'Surf blue' its a 70's blue teal if there ever was one! http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PA191494.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PA191495.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PA291505.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PA311512.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PA301508.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PA301511.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PB131523.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PB131522.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PB131521.jpg |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Great looking resto on the Toy. Love that suf blue hue. Classic FJ color...
|
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Surf blue / seacraft blue would look nice on the hull sides
|
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Always been a fan of the old FJ and the CJ.
Love the color. |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Finaly got my wrap on.
I call it the club house. F'ing this is almost taller than my garage! Even after I put the floor on, Ill be able to stand up in the middle with 8in to spare! I also got my heaters fired up, and started drying all the damp corners and cleaning EVERY bit of the stringers boxes. My 2 part foam is in, now I just have o wait for a nice enough day to pour it. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PC131540.jpg |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Now that's dedication :D
strick |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Dedication? I think I only have a couple months before this thing needs to be in the water! Those few weeks will be gone before I know it, and spring is the busiest time of the year for me.
A couple gallons of diesel and a little bit of propane and we have foamed boxes! I put pieces of ply up along the outside of the boat to guide the heat into the right places. and put the smaller heater under the trailer. After letting it blast away for a half an hour the hull had warmed up to 65+ degrees. Then I lit off the big propane heater (on medium) inside the wrap and I was off to pouring foam in a Tshirt! [8D] http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PC191545.jpg Having one of these to check that the temp was even through the boxes is crucial! http://www.amazon.com/Temperature-In.../dp/B002YE3FS4 Once this stuff hits 120degrees LOOK OUT the action starts to happen fast! I coaxed it along with a hand held heat gun too. There was a little bit of spill over, and I have trimmed the excess, but that step of the project is DONE http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/PC191547.jpg :) |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Wow that's awesome.
|
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
The project starts up again. I have been trying to fabricate some of the parts and pieces I will need later in the project, bulkheads, deck pieces etc. These dont make for some good pictures.
Mainly the weather has shut down my glass work, but now that its warming up and the 'paying work' at the shop is slowing down the boat may get stuffed inside in the next couple weeks. I started building an on deck live well the other day. Curving 1in foam board, on top is the top mold which has a spot for a flush mounted piece of lexan. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3041574.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3041573.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3041572.jpg |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
The weather outside still kinda sucks for glass work, its cold but clear most days. I have hauled my FJ40 to VT for the finishing touches and my garage is now OPEN to slathering resin all over things. So I have been prefabing a bunch of parts for the boat.
Built most of a bait tank last week. I need to get the floor done to get the height finalized. But the top is done (from a borrowed mold) and the bottom is 1in foam bent around wtiht a layer of 1.5oz matt, 24oz roven scraps on the bottom and a wrap of 6in 1708 where the bottom and sides meet up. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3041572.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3041573.jpg Straped up in the oval shape http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3041574.jpg After the glass setup I yanked 2 of the straps, it should be light and strong. When I am done it will be 45gal or so, maybe a little less depending on the outlet height and the overall finish height. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3111579.jpg I started patterning and cutting my floor panels. Its so cold that it takes a day for the glue to setup on my little strips of 1/4in ply. That really slows me down. Yes that is a power tank I am useing with the air saw, because my compressor is down at the Paint shop. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3111581.jpg Got the fish box cover molded up and have one layer of matt on it. Ill know tonight how that turns out. Wax and liquid release, hoping to keep the nonskid attached to the original hatch. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3111575.jpg all gellcoat up! http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3111580.jpg The fuel tank shelf is laid up behind the hatch (both setting up at time of picture) http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3111578.jpg I have also finished coating the bulkheads too. |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
looks goond man. keep at it, the fish will be back before you know it.

Any time you guys wanna stop by and have a beer, let me know!
Hey Brian let me know when your headed to O-town to get some more resin il have your hatch waiting! |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Got a bunch of the final layout figured out after measuring a couple different boats and a little head scratching.
I had planned on putting my live well back against the transom, but after throwing it in there I realized there will be no room for anybody to fish! So with a little tweaking and some marks on my plywood I made it fit in front of the console. There is still enough room to walk around the edges and Ill still cut the height down. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3201584.jpg THe main reason for rethinking the livewell position was because of my bilge hatch. I really wanted to be able to pop it while underway or fishing. I hadent cut my last piece of deck yet, but wanted to check spacing over the thru hull and transducer holes. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3201582.jpg Hereyou can see the poistion of the fish box under the leaning post, it will hinge about 3in back from the front legs. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3201583.jpg The one thing I didnt take into consideration was the fact the fish box's original position in the hull is slightly deeper than where I am putting it. (aprox 2 inches) I had a bump of hull and deck putty that used to secure the box to the center stringer. I started grinding off, and before I knew it I was into the (very wet) balsa core! The copper sleeve had been leaking into the core for years. I ripped it all off and laid on 3 layers of 1.5oz matt and (1) 1708. That gives me a total of thickness close to 1/2in and I lost close to 3/4of an inch of height, just right. While I was grinding I also took the edges off so I can stick it to the bottom of the floor pannels, making the hatch sit flush. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3201585.jpg |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Finaly got the shop cleaned up enough to get the boat in and work on it! Couldnt just leave it there without messing with it, so I finished stripping the stupid 'Pipe Dream' name off the side and leveled it up on the stands.
http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3301589.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P3301588.jpg |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
I have been going down every night to the shop for a couple hours and making some headway. The transom cap is mocked up and roughly glassed together. I popped it off as a unit and will be glassing the underside, then some body work to straighten up my bobbles in the cuts.
http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P4031592.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P4031593.jpg The keel stringer and extension piece for the tank to sit on is 75% done, I ran out of resin so I couldn't put the last couple layers on there. The extension is what the tanks' platform sit on and has been cabosil'd to the main stringer below it. Then I laid 4&6in wide 1708 over it. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P4031591.jpg Last night was the (hopefully) last of the major grinding on the hull. Now that the boat is on stands I felt comfortable removing these rear shelves that were completely rotten and no good. I will be replacing them as they are convenient to mount pumps to. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P4051595.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P4051596.jpg |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
I have been working down at the shop till 9 or so every evening. Got a bunch of glass work done. Not too many 'major' things for photos, but the project is progressing which makes me happy
Transom cap has 3 layers on the top, 6 on the bottom along with those 13in disks (8 layers of glass surplus cutouts from a buddys shop) Those will be back up plates for some Vert rod holders down the road. Mr Charlie wont be pulling my transom into the ocean any time soon! http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P4091601.jpg The stringer boxes are covered over, and the rear platforms rebuild, and glassed on. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P4081600.jpg I ran some 1708 tape down where the stringer boxes meet the hull, there was some grinder cuts down low from the PO trying to get water to drain out... Got it straight and level the first time too, before starting all the work. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P4061597.jpg |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Been a while for an update. Its absolute chaos around this time of year for me, too much work and boat work slows way down, happens every year.
I have managed to get my tanks in, PVC chases cut to size, transom cap into shape and ready for glass, a coat of filler on the transom and all the old thru hulls and scuppers filled in on the bottom of the boat. I picked up my new Hermco bracket today too. The bilge hose for my fish boxes will be here tomorrow, the first roll was the wrong size. Once the hose goes in, I can glass up the last bulkhead and screw down the tanks. I am also waiting on fuel filler hose, I have send line and vent line. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P5041618.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P5041619.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P5041620.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P5041621.jpg |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Well its been about a month, thought it would be good time for a quick update. Not many major steps forward but some small progress. Work has been going crazy these last few weeks, so only a few hrs a night to work on it.
Got 3rd layer of filler on the stern, and 2nd on the top and front of the cap. Got the tanks installed and just about plumbed up. The rawwater seacock is in and sealed up. Waiting on a few more parts to show up, thats always good to slow it down some. Over all the decks are really close to being put down, just some minor tweeking and I can glass in the PVC chases. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P5270008.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P5270007.jpg and some new gold and black decals came in! http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P5220002.jpg |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Build is looking great. Are you still planning on putting the livewell in front of the console? Looked at the pic of it placed there and it looks tight to walk around it. What kind of seat/leaning post will you be putting in?
|
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
hello i just pick up a 1978 savage with the same teak [image]http://http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h1...roject/026.jpg[/image] splash rail is this a factory thing or did someone add this
|
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
The live well does fit in front of the console, and there is about 10in on either side of it to walk by. I am having second thoughts about it though, one reason why I never finished it. I am considering hanging a set of toobes on the outside of the transom, over the bracket instead. Less water, less weight, still removable, less deck space lost. Right now the unfinished live well is just holding my bracket
I have an extralarge Birdsall leaning post that I am putting in, from my Mako, I am also using the Mako console, the Ttop was orignaly from a 32 seacraft, and modified to fit the Mako console. As far as I can tell they were a factory option on these boats, they all seam to be the same size (freeking huge) and construction that I have seen. I am really interested in seeing how they run. http://www.birdsallmarine.com/fixed-...ray-p-307.html http://www.seacraft-boats.com/boat/?boat=3085 couple of the only pictures I have of the whole rig assembled http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P7060010.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P7041298.jpg |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Can you put the livewell under the seat of the leaning post? I would plumb it and insulate it good and then you could use to hold a few cold beers when you weren't using it as a livewell. If you only live bait fish a few times a year then you will get pissed off a few times a year that you didn't set it up when did the re-do. I kick myself everytime I reach with my right hand for the throttles. That will be the next change I make after the next tournament. I cannot get used to having the throttles on the left side of the wheel and it would have been so easy to change when I re-did mine, now, not so much.
|
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
I have kicked that idea around too. The reason why I like hanging them out side the transom is because the plumbing is hidden pretty easily and there is less 'stuff' on deck. I like keeping my cooler under the leaning post, because it JUST fits in there.
I know exactly what you mean about not wanting to re-do something after its done. One of the reasons this project is taking so long, I am planning on keeping it and want it to be ready to fish right out of the box! |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Put the bracket on last week, mainly to drill the holes and mark out for scuppers. Put another pass of filler to get the last of the body work on the transom cap *looks a little bumpy in the pics*
I also glassed the inside and mocked up the corner boxes/floor setup. It looks like ill have to build some sort of 'catch well' for the scuppers, below the level of the deck. If you look close inside the boat there are sharpie marks for the angle between the swim platform and the floatation tub of the bracket. Kinda sucks as I wanted to have a clear flat deck back to them, but oh well. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P7200041.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P7180036.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P7180037.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P7190038.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P7190039.jpg |
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
Scupper issue solved, going to make slanted ramps in the floor, down to 2.5in lower than the bracket flange for scupper door clearance. Going to have to 'notch' into the stringer top a little bit but after its all said and done drainage shouldn't be an issue.
|
Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?
The body work is 99% done, got one more little bobble to deal with and it will be getting shot with gellcoat in the next couple days. Should be able to roll it out middle of next week and start bolting on the shiney stuff!
Grabbed a couple pictures today too Transom top http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P8180061.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P8180060.jpg Instead of screwing down through the deck (and making more holes for water) I will be thru-bolting the console into this 3in raised piece that is completely glassed separately from the deck. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P8180066.jpg In these pictures you can see the height issue I had with the scuppers, the row of 1/2in holes is for the platform on the bracket and in the following couple pics you see the 'slides' for the scuppers 2in lower than the floor height. For this reason alone I am ITCHING to get it in the water and weight it to check the water line!! http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P8180065.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P8180064.jpg http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P8180062.jpg |
