Willy,

You are going to love how the boat does with the Bracket. It jumps up on plane with the big tub. The full transom cuts the noise way down. Great swim platform for the warm days too when your not fishing. Keep up the good porn ;)

Re: 1972 23' cc project

I got the hull sides and transom in primer over the weekend, It will need some blocking and pin hole filling and another coat of primer and it should be good enough. I will be only repriming over the bodywork spots and not the whole hull. I was thinking about doing the bottom in gel coat instead of bottom paint. Any recomendations for gel coat? I'm thinking of rolling it on instead of spraying. I'm not looking for a ultra smooth finish, I just dont want to have to buy and paint it every year or so. http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0404.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0403.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0402.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0401.jpg

Talk to Bobby about shooting it for you. Hes going to do my transom and top cap with duratech and Ill buff it down. I also know somebody who has done black gellcoat with duratech on the bottom so it looks like bottom paint but is smooth and shiney. (covered a few repairs too)

If you’re going to use gelcoat on the bottom, and you have a compressor, I have two suggestions. First, and foremost, mix unwaxed gelcoat 50/50 with Dura Tech clear gloss additive. Second, thin it with 20% acetone and spray it. I did the bottom of my 25 that way and it looks pretty good. I tried rolling it and the results were disappointing. This is a sprayed finish with no sanding or buffing afterward:

Re: 1972 23' cc project

Wildman - becareful of 50/50 mixing a dark color gelcoat and duratech clear. Fat2tuna painted the pepto pink bracket ;) That was 50/50 duratech clear and red gelcoat. Looked awesome for 6 months . . . but faded fast. Spray the bottom with awlgrip or go white gelcoat/duratech like Blue_Heron.

Re: 1972 23' cc project

I was thinking of just doing the bottom in white gelcoat. so the duratech is just a clear addative to make it more shiny? If so I'm not to worried about how shiny it is or how smooth it comes out but if I was to roll it on I was hopeing it would be no more bumpy than bottom paint.I'm building this for a work boat so it will be getting full of blood and guts all the time and doesnt have to be super perfect, Just respectable.

Re: 1972 23' cc project

The nice part of Duratech is you can buff it down if you want a smooth shiney surface and it wont F'up like regular gelcoat.

Re: 1972 23' cc project

Duratech is a reducer that thins the gelcoat to make it sprayable, it also makes it dry in air without pva, and it also adds gloss. I had good success with it.

Re: 1972 23' cc project

does anyone know of a good source to get gelcoat around the cape. I'll probaly need about 3 gallons.

I sanded the bottom then using a brushable gel coat but I rolled it on. from fiberglass coatings. Came out nice no sanding or buffing after.Dusky white with 2 to 3 drops of yellow oxide per 4 oz

BigShrimpin...........

BigShrimpin - Old Thread ..... I apologize for bumping this thread back "up". But who built the red motor bracket see on post #47 of this thread?

McGillicuddy 06-11-2012 02:12 PM

Bigshrimpin built that. Here's his thread:

GoodChance 06-11-2012 03:39 PM

I see. Thanks.

For better or worse, I now own this 23 SeaCraft along with a bracket that BigShrimpin apparently built (VERY nice bracket BTW).

The transom installed by Fat2Nawilly was also done very well but I suppose he lost interest in the project and moved on to a very nice inboard SeaCraft.

I've got the boat "flipped" in the yard now, all the bottom paint has been removed, 2 coats of epoxy (RAKA) was applied last week. I dug-out, then faired out some blisters. Applied some fairing compound over the entire running surface and getting ready to Awlgrip the bottom sometime later this week or next.

Good to know where the bracket originated!!

fat2nawilly 06-11-2012 07:41 PM

goodchance please keep this post going or start a new one, I'd like to see my old craft finally get completed.good luck with her and i hope it comes out well.

Got the boat flipped, all bottom paint removed, fixed some gouges and blisters, applied 3 coats of a penetrating epoxy resin to seal the gelcoat and applied 4 additional layers of biaxial to the bow area where some heavy knicks were located. Then applied 4 coats of Interlux 2000e. That is where she is now and as seen in the photos.

Later this week I will lightly sand and apply 2 coats of Awlgrip 545 primer and ready her for a topcoat spraying this weekend.

This after many, many sanding/fairing applications using a DA sander and 2 different longboards (I hate to see a "finished" boat and there are "waves" through the hull from being unproperly finished).

So the progress continues........

The bracket was installed using 8 - 1/2" SS bolts, 1 tube of 5200, and several layers of 1708 biaxial cloth (yes, I fiberglassed the bracket to the transom as well :))

Applied a bunch of 545 primer coats plus some high build where needed.

Then sprayed about $600 worth of Awlgrip in about 60 minutes.

GoodChance 11-28-2012 08:27 AM

Hard to see in the photos but the blue and the white have a "mirror" finish. No orange peel nor any runs. The blue is especially striking. In the future, I will add a 1" boot-stripe in probably yellow or gold color.

The console you see in the photo is just temporay and will be removed. I managed to purchase a nice CC/T-top from a 31 Contender than will be used on this boat.

Paint is Awlgrip Matterhorn white and Royal Blue. I've played with many of the Awlgrip "white" colors (about 10 different versions of "White" are available") and I like Matterhorn the best. It has a slight "blue" hint to it and masks dirt pretty well unlike the "Snow white" which looks great initially but prone to show dirt.

Of course the boat was sprayed at 38psi (gun pressure), using a 25% reduction with T0003. Air temp at time of application was 72 degrees and rising to 78 by 4pm.

As you can see, I am working outside but under a tarp to keep bugs, leaves, sap and the sun away. I find that I get a better paint finish while spraying outside than I do trying to spray inside my barn where lots of ambient dust is all around and finds it's way into the finish. When painting outside, I take the garden hose and spray all around the boat to keep the ground moist and dust to a minimium.

GoodChance 11-28-2012 08:46 AM

She goes back onto her 8,000 lb aluminium trailer this week. Motor will be installed. Inside painted. Console installed.

Old'sCool 11-28-2012 11:22 AM

Sweet!!! More pics please

fat2nawilly 11-28-2012 07:22 PM

glad to see its coming along nicely, keep up the good work and keep the pics coming.

strick 11-28-2012 08:15 PM

The paint job looks great. Good idea to wet the ground. I know a guy that sprays custom cars and he always wet the shop floor before spraying so I do the same thing. One thing I noticed is that the bracket looks to be mounted fairly high. Did you do that on purpose? What shaft motor is going on that? Nice work and keep the pics coming.

strick

GoodChance 11-28-2012 08:31 PM

Strick ..... yes the bracket is a bit high ..... good eye. Motor is a Honda 225, 30" shaft.

strick 11-29-2012 10:09 AM

Do you have a link to the Duffy re build? I dont think I ever saw that one.

Thanks Bryan for finding and posting the link from Noreast.com

The 35 Duffy was (and still is) a fantastic boat. That particular boat was my favorite. Great ride, comfortable and very safe. A friend of mine owns the Duffy now.

But I am also looking forward to betting this SeaCraft completed too.

That bracket is REALLY high. I have a double with the same Honda, and I wish I mounted it 1/2-3/4in LOWER. Good luck, I hope it don't sit too low in back end!

The perception in the picture must be deceiving. The motor height ..... from the anticavitation plate to the hanging bracket ....... ranges from 28 to 31.5" (you have 5 mounting holes, therefore the range in mounting heights). The bracket sits 29" above the horizontal plane of the hull. I measured 10x and cut just once. :) I'm in pretty good shape.

Color Combo

There is a good chance that boat will be show worthy upon completion.

Looking down the sides in the photos shows love and sweat was applied gingerly to her. The color combo looks fantastic.

Bravo-Zulu on the work so far (and your duffy). You have a great skill-set with the watercraft.

Boat looks great after paint. Any updates?

Since the last "update", the project was put onto it's new trailer, rolled into the barn and the process of "fairing" has begun. The longboard sander (and my shoulders) have been getting a workout!! Hopefully I will haver the inside primed with 545 in the coming 2 weeks, Awlgrip the inside, install the console that was removed from a 31 Contender and finally install the motor. Shooting for an April 1 completion.
