Slow going over here in sunny California. Not much time to work on the boat but here are a few more photos of what we have accomplished.

Thanks. Things seem to moving slower then anticipated due to some minor set backs but we are trucking along. This week I hope to get the transom and stringers in the bracket so we can pop it out of the mold by this weekend and hopefully start on the top half of the mold. The bracket is set up for twins but we are putting a single 250 with a 30 inch shaft. It has a 30 inch set back. The lay up consisted of duratec primer and then 2 layers of heavy matt then 3 layers 1708. The corners and edges of the bracket are reinforced over and over again and are about 3/4 inch thick laminate. Open areas are about 5/16" thick. It will get 3 stringers (core cell) laminated in place. The transom will get a 1 inch thick piece of core cell sandwiched in between 2 pieces of plywood...not sure on the thickness of the plywood yet as I still have to do some measuring. I am happy how the little live well for the 20 is turning out so far.

I've been watching all of your builds and am SOOO impressed but can't understand why with so much talent you use a prefab livewell?
Is it really that much more to make your own? Don't take my comment the wrong way, please. You are God-like to use wannabes. Second question. Do you (can you ) save the molds you build for your brackets? |
Red-
Time is the main reason. That said I did build my own live well on the 25 seafari. I really like the kodiak live wells for a couple of reasons...one is that they have a directional water flow with water jets that push the water in a circular fashion around the tank FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. So instead of having an angled fitting shooting water from one location around the tank the kodiak has jets that push water from the bottom of the tank to the top of the tank in a circular fashion. They also have a recessed area on the bottom of the tank for a light. The tanks are built very nice and priced reasonably so that by the time you add up the costs of what it would take to duplicate it you would be in the same ball park figure. As far as the bracket molds go they are cheap "one off" wood molds that would probably warp over time and become useless. Also they could not be moved around without damaging them as they are not sturdy enough to with stand much movement. Also I am not in the business of building brackets for anyone but myself so who knows when and if I would ever use them again. Just an FYI if anyone thinks for a second that it will be an easy task to build your own bracket think again. Bill and I spent six solid hours non stop on Sunday (except to sip on a beer occasionally) laying up what you see in the pictures. That does not count the time I spent building the mold...the time I spent cutting all the glass and the time we will spend building the top half of the mold and laying it up...popping it out of the mold sanding it and painting it etc...etc...etc... :) strick |
Thanks, I guessed it was just easier to build around the kodiak especially with all the other things you have going on.
I do not think building your own bracket is an easy task. If fact most of the things you do on all of your builds don't seem easy to me either. Patiently awaiting more build photos. |

More bracket photos. Transom is in It consists of 1" core cell sandwiched in between a piece of 3/4" ply and 1/2 I ply. There are 2 layers of 1808 over the inside. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P7291056.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P7291057.JPG making a template for the stringers http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P7291058.JPG I had some core cell 1/2" that has been laying around so I decided to use that but it was warped so I put down some plastic and glassed them up wit some 1808 and weighted it down. That straightened them out after the glass dried. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P7291059.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P7291060.JPG |

Beautiful work as always. I love the way you made the Kodiak look OEM. Making a tank isnt that hard, but making one that actually keeps bait as happy as a well designed Kodiak...good luck! Looks like the best of both worlds to me.

Strick; could you post the dimensions of your bracket? maybe with a diagram. I'm assuming that's a 14 degree rise.
thanks' stuckinlowgearbill |
Sure.
Set back 30" Max Tub width is 54" Swim platform 72" Deadrise 20 degrees Bracket angle front and back 13 degrees Top of swim platform to keel of the bracket is 23" Top of swim platform to top of bracket is about 6" More pictures. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P8041085.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P8051089.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P8051091.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P8051095.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P8051097.JPG |

This bracket is set for twins or a single engine with a 30 inch shaft. It's big and has been kicking our weekend rookie butts. I don't know if I want to do this again. strick |

Hey Strick, you guys look way too serious! Have a cold one and relax a little man! :D

Sweet!! I like the safe

But it's looking good, Chuck. How much will it weigh when it's done? BTW, I don't think you can claim rookie status any more. Just sayin'... Dave |

As always Doc, Cheers |
That Bracket is pretty sweet Strick! Do you have an idea of weight?
|
What is that thing your making anyway?
Oh, I know, it's a portable operating table for the back of that Gucci DVM road coach right http://forums.floridasportsman.com/i...ies/driver.gif |
Thanks for the cheer-leading and coaching fellas. :)

The serious look is AFTER an ice chest full of beer. We ran out just as we set the platform on the bucket BTW it was nice talking with you the other day. I will get a weight on it for you guys when it's all put together. It will get bonded to the tub with some "Potter Putty" (cabosil and resin) and glassed around the seams with 1808 so that will add a little more weight to it. I ran out of core cell so had to use some 1/2 " plywood squares for the coring on the swim platform deck. strick |
Plywood? Really spectacular job, plywood notwithstanding. :)
Definitely Not a rookie. Keep up the great work captain. Vic |
Chuck..my zip code for mailing that bracket is 34984!!!!:D
Looks great! -Fred |
Well, well, well. And I thought I had been busy....
It's always an education watching you work Chuck. I'm getting jealous! |
Fred-
The check is in the mail :) seriously if you can cut wood with a chain saw then you can make a bracket. Calculated cost for the big bracket is around $700 including glass, resin, partall, wax, clay, rollers acetone, wood for molds etc... A smaller bracket will be cheaper. Greg- After looking at the pictures of your house remodel... I'm jealous :) One of these days we need to hook up... heck were only 1 hour apart! Working nights and weekends when my day job does not interfere. Quick fair on the live well enclosure. I hate sanding and fairing and would have rather made a finished part for this application but it would have took forever doing the tooling for the mold so I am stuck sanding and fairing out what I have created. Soon I can spray it with primer and sand and fair some more! http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P8111145.JPG Made room for the little boat in the shop and it is now on stands. It will not leave the shop until at least the out side is painted. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P8121146.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P8121147.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P8121152.JPG Plywood strips that will act as a shelf for the base that holds up the live well http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P8121153.JPG Glassed in place. I still have to cap off the ends. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P8131179.JPG For the actual base I laminated a piece of 5/8" core cell on the flat table. To speed things up I layed up both sides and then covered it in black plastic and weighted it down till it cured. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P8121154.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P8121156.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/sceptre...i/P8121155.JPG |
