Sunshine didn't take long at all with mine. For piece of mind, if I were you, bite the bullet and get a new tank.
|
Still slowly moving forward. Seems like the to-do list is still growing. I am still trying to figure out what to do about my main fuel tank, but trying to keep moving forward. My 40 gallon tank is a belly tank and I made some fiberglass straps for the tank to sit on. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but let me know if anyone has any input on the straps.

There are stainless steel filter housings available if you havent seen them

Plowing along. No big leaps forward yet. Got a couple of new LED spreader lights on the T-top.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps7f290c68.jpg Got the tank supports in for the small front tank. I think they will work well. Someone please tell me now if they have experienced an epic failure with this approach! Still have to do some sanding and add a little more glass on the boards and over the supports. The tank will sit on the supports and then the screws will go through the tank bracket, through the fiberglass supports and into the board. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psa16902f8.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...pse91d2bd8.jpg Picked the main tank from the welding shop. Still not sure what I'm going to do here? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps1a3016db.jpg We got the new fuel filters and valves installed in the new transom hatch. It will be nice to have these up and out of the bilge. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psf0d399ab.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps4e6d25a7.jpg The front fish box floor is back in and waiting on fairing and painting. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps9e74867d.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps21082482.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...pse1a02f5b.jpg Finally, my need to see some actual progress forced us to cut and rough fit the floor in. I really hated to take it out and go back to my sad reality. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps85d15ca0.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psa477ed84.jpg Anyone else like me and feel apprehensive about posting pics on this site? I worry every time that I post pics someone is sitting at home saying "what a dumb ass!" After seeing all the cool stuff guys are doing to these boats I feel like such a poser with my repair attempts. |

Since we Re moving the fuel tank forward and losing our storage space in the console I am thinking about adding some floor boxes. This is what I have come up with so far. Any other ideas? Rear box is for pumps, etc. I will add a bulkhead to close off the other side of the box.

Armstrong also makes 10" x 20" rectangular watertight hatches like their rounds ones that might work for your deck holds vs manufacturing them.:) BTW: You will need to countersink the cutouts so they sit flush. See my pic below. |
Been steady at it, just seems like not much is getting done. Hopefully, I will be ready to put the floor down in the next week??? A few pics of the work so far.

Nothing like farming out a job someone says will take two weeks and finally picking up the finished product 2 months later. Floor is in, now time to get paint, rigging and wiring. Maybe by the end of 2014 and I will have it finished.

Finally able to shoot some primer today. Both boys got in on the action today.

Oh man had to be nice to get to lay down some spray I bet, you have been putting work and I think it's great!! Can't wait to see her finished off.

Your getting there Brian! Keep the pics coming :)

We got a little out of sequence on the repairs and had to put the console and T top back in before we were able to get the paint done, but looking at how the electrical turned out, I am glad we got one more step completed.

Very nice job!! I like the EPIRB! I wish I was the guy who invented tie-wraps!!!!! Even at 1/10 of a penny each for royalties you're a zillionaire!!!

I had another brilliant idea to insulate the fish box lid. I had a piece of Styrofoam so I figured I would give it a try. I had some questions on whether it would work or not. Here is the process.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psbbfd0bc8.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psf34cf1cc.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...pse3109209.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psc3dd6bce.jpg As some of you already know, this was not the end of the process. I let it sit up overnight and checked it the morning. Seemed like something was wrong. I had expected a little of the foam to melt around the edges, but when I tapped on the area that was glassed and it sounded hollow. Drilled a couple of holes and yup, nothing in there. Drilled a few more holes and poured in some foam. Not sure it this is gonna be anything but a big PITA, but don't know till you try. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps8cfa8304.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps752dfb12.jpg |
As you've noticed, polystyrene foam and polyester resin aren't very compatible. But you can use epoxy resin over styrofoam with good results. I used styrofoam to insulate the lids to my fish box and it has worked very well.

Ba17 get some roofing foam.. It's slow density foam that comes in all thicknesses. Very versatile. It's a urethane foam the polyester resin does not attack.. Mine has the fiberglass felt paper that loves the resin. Hot shot a thin coat to seal it then lay you glass.. Very easy to shape as well..and pretty strong once laid up...we use this stuff to make fish boxes and coolers

Steady progress this week. Got paint on interior and kiwigrip installed on the floor. Ran a little short on kiwigrip. Need some to finish the topside, so if anyone has a gallon anywhere near Ocean Isle Beach, nc let me know.......

The Kiwi Grip looks good.
|
Looks nice, is it the grey color?? That's the color I used on my gunnels. Stuff works well....especially after you get the hang of rolling it on. Good luck!
|
It is grey and looked awesome. However, I learned a couple more lessons with the Kiwi.
1. Don't try to rush the project so you can get back on the water 2. Read the instructions We had a tournament this past weekend and were really pushing to get the boat ready to fish. We got the boat fishable and entered. It was great to get the boat back on the water and we caught some fish. We even eeked out a top 20 finish out of 196 boats. Now time to pay for rushing. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps8dff94a4.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps6d02f15f.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps75c6f652.jpg Not sure what went wrong with the kiwi. We put it down on Thursday and fished sunday. Also, I think we used to fine of sandpaper on the floor. Going back to the drawing board on the Kiwi. The one thing that I did not like about the kiwigrip is that it was "slick". There was plenty of non skid but when it was wet you would slip on it. Has anyone else had this problem or did we completely screw the pooch on the installation? The boat really performed much better with the weight of the fuel tanks moved forward. I had the delusional dream that we may pick up some speed with all the repairs and weight we removed from the boat, but it was just a dream. I ran it wide open with about 30 gallons of fuel and saw 40 knots. Please give me some feedback on the Kiwigrip. Thanks, BA |
Nice King!

How fine of sandpaper did you use? I've never seen anything like that and I've used it on a bunch of boats. I've use 180 grit with no problems and I think even 320. That should have been enough time for it harden unless it was really thick. If you used a whole gallon on just the floor it must have been pretty thick. I did a whole floor and cap with 2/3's a gallon. So with it being thick it probably needed a lot longer to cure. Also if its humid it can add some time to the cure. I've never seen any peel off.

I don't think it was too thick? We used 320 sandpaper. I just picked the boat back up from the shop and now the floor looks like this all over the place.
|
It's been raining all day so the floor has been wet.
|
Nevermind. Was thinking kiwi grip was a urethane. Doesn't seem to be?
|
I used a similar product called TuffKote and it looked great dry, but was slippery once wet and with fish slime. Tended to always look dirty too.
Also edges tended to peel at bit with scrub down, so removed it all and went with extra coarse grit and AwlGrip- works great and cleans up well. |
