Fairing is Awlfair. Transom notch is as narrow as i could get and still swing motor lock to lock, by my calculations it ended up at 27-1/2". If theres clearance issues a small manual jackplate will set it back a bit. Will most likely put one on anyway just to fine tune height...

O and 2018 no doubt!

dirtwheelsfl 12-27-2017 09:43 PM

Cap is officially on for good! Epoxied on for now and tabbed in a few spots, will get a full perimeter tab on the inside when shes upside down.

Cored/stiffened and widened to 7-1/2"? in the rear. Wouldve used a full width core the whole way, but just trying to use cutoffs ive got laying around. And ran some conduits because i hate wires dangling...

Nice work.....this boat is going to be tight!

Gelcoat was in rough shape. Bottom is not as bad as the hullsides (UV). Some keel delam and a few stress cracks in the steps. Bottom will get a homemade epoxy fill, sides get awlfair

Wow!! Awsome looking rebuild! It’s astounding how fast you can crank out rebuilds. I love the forward storage, and envious that you can just flip a boat to work on the bottom. You Rock!

NoBones 02-11-2018 08:34 PM

A 20 still looks sexy naked and upside down !:cool:

We gave you 3 extra weeks for the gathering date to be ready...

So GO, GO, GO..:D

erebus 02-11-2018 10:31 PM

Jaysus! How do you get everything to lay down so flat and smooth?!
And how are you (and everything else) not all covered in resin!?
I don't even see any big globs in your driveway. And your shoes aren't ruined...

I was working on my Sceptre this afternoon, got home and the wife pointed out that I had hull and deck putty in my hair.
Unscheduled haircut.

Also, please tell me your keeping the name. Right down to the kisses over the I's.

dirtwheelsfl 02-12-2018 02:15 PM

Thanks mshugg, pays to have a buddy with a crane service!

Ken im still shooting for cinco! (memorial day is probably more likely though)

Zach my key to cleanliness is being cheap honestly haha. All glass gets weighed so im not mixing excess resin, excess fairing compound and my blades get smeared on something (console) so theres very little waste. Gloves are only used to handle and place glass really, rollers get worked barehanded. If the goo isnt on the boat then its money down the crapper. Been going to rodeos about half my life also.

Yes the name is going back on exactly like that, handbrushed. Bottom will be minty green, matterhorn hullsides, insides minty green w matterhnorn nonskid. Red boot

I would love to come and just watch you work for a couple of days. I bet I could seriously improve my game. Unfortunately no scheduled trips to FL. Stuck here in New England for the duration.
Guess I'll just keep my hair short.
:D
Mind if I pick your brain from a distance?

What do you use primarily for resin? Polyester? Vinylester? Epoxy? All of the above?
I know you use awlfair for fairing, (so do I). Did you spray the blue gelcoat in the livewell, and the white in the bilge?
What do you use for putty?

dirtwheelsfl 02-12-2018 08:33 PM

I rarely work without a headsock haha.

99% of it is RAKA epoxy. Ill make some things out of regular poly or lay up some solid glass backing plates but thats about it. Esters and gelcoat is like a foreign language to me honestly, was trained in the one-off epoxy realm.

The livewell and bilge paint is some Sherwin Williams tile-clad. They mix it into matterhorn for me. I just added a blue pigment to the livewell mix.

Putty is just thickened epoxy. Different fillers for different purposes. Fairing mix is like a 1.5:1:0.5 of cabosil, microballoons, and glass bubbles. I mix by feel...

dirtwheelsfl 02-15-2018 08:43 PM

I cant leave well enough alone.. Should be pretty dry between these and a nice wide rubrail. 1" coosa ripped to 1-3/4 wide then put on end to rip the angle.

Spray rails look great! I’m curious, what are the holes where the chines meet at the bow? They’re too small and too high for a bow thruster, unless it’s rocket asistted.

Yup tow eye. Crazy what they want for those gawdy custom stainless ones ! Also try to eliminate hardware when i can.

Ill get some close ups of it

Tow eye? Will you be dragging her behind a mother ship?

Sweet work

Its actually booTy, but that would be a fitting nickname haha! Its a 56' DMR made in Maine. We think DMR stands for "Didnt Make it Right", but yes total tank. A friend of mine bought it after the 04 hurricanes after it destroyed all the other boats in the marina. My dad and i put the 2 hardtops and flybridge on it in 09-10. Used to be a lobster boat, then converted to a ferry in the bahamas, then was a treasure boat when the hurricanes hit. 14hours to Walkers isnt so bad at night. With the proper supplies...

Old'sCool 02-20-2018 05:37 AM

That's really nice!

dirtwheelsfl 02-28-2018 09:32 PM

Got some hi build on.. Nice to be all one color again. Chine down (or up?) is some immersion rated epoxy i had a bunch of so i rolled it on. Sides are awlgrip... Dont mind the runs

Man you do some clean work! Will the scuppers have a flap of any kind or just remain open?

Just open for now. Been on some bigger boats with a similar setup and they worked pretty sweet. Also the holes match the OD of a tennis ball so plugs wont be hard to find...

dirtwheelsfl 03-13-2018 09:06 PM

Not much of a visual difference but theres ALOT of hours before this 545 got sprayed today. Goal is to have bottom and sides painted this weekend

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4776/...5e43a899_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr

Heres the tow eye. I took a length of 1.25"? sched80 pvc and filled it with thickened epoxy/glass and bedded it vertically in the stem, then heavily glassed it in. Drilled some holes on either side of that, and took a piece of clay about 1" diameter and wrapped it around the glassed pipe and out thru the holes, then glassed around the clay on the inside. Afterward the clay got melted out with a torch and were left with an all glass wraparound hole. Got a few layers of cloth inside it as well afterward...

Cutoff pieces from a friend at a local custom builder. Not sure where youre at but just ask around. Most shops would rather turn scrap foam into new saw blades or light bulbs than let it sit around taking up space...

Ya know Mr. Dirt you need to take advantage of that rocking chair, sit down about 15 feet away, pour a top shelf single malt scotch (or some 23 year old Pappy), rock along and admire your work!! :)

lelandtampa 03-20-2018 12:19 PM

In addition to gucci stamp I think the speed of this build may merit the creation of a Ferrari stamp.

dirtwheelsfl 03-20-2018 07:53 PM

James Beam and Busch Latte's get alot of thinking done around here! haha
The speed is out of necessity. Cant be boatless for too long yano. All the hours will be forgotten when your hair blows in the wind on that first ride!

Also cant wait to take a nice chunk out of the boat when i smash a bottle of Andre over the front. Get the first ding out of the way quickly

The Booty Quest is a DMR which stands for (Dwight M. Raymond). They were made in Kennebunkport, Maine.

I am enjoying reading your build. I really like how your spray rails are integrated into the chine.

billythekid 04-17-2018 09:57 PM

some of the cleanist fiberglass work I have ever seen. you sir are in the 1% . Tell us your backround I know there had to be some boat building in there somewhere. where are you on the treasure coast, I am at my house in Vero Beach a couple times a year
