Now I can't wait to do the deck!!

erebus 03-18-2018 04:12 PM

Damn man!! Slow down!
You're making the rest of us look bad!
Need to pace yourself...
:D

lelandtampa 03-18-2018 04:59 PM

That is exactly how I am going to paint my 78 MA and add a black boot stripe. Boat looks great man.

Topflitegraphics 03-19-2018 04:51 PM

Just realized that now there is no way I can put the old black rub rail back on her. Going to have to buy some white, maybe with stainless insert if the budget allows it...

Vezo, Part II 03-19-2018 05:36 PM

Why can’t you use the original rub rail? Black will kick that paint scheme nicely. Taco makes some nice stainless steel with black inserts. One piling bump and White is a nightmare.

Also, if you’re original rub rail is same as mine, notice the bottom side of rail. It has an ever so small portion that redirects water back down as it climbs the hull sides. Bushwacker pointed this out to me, and how much drier she will be. I guess it’s all in the details. The little things...

Vezo

Oh, and as said earlier, SLOW DOWN. This site doesn’t move at your speed.

Vezo, Part II 03-19-2018 05:43 PM

Went back to your original post. Rub rails appear identical.

dirtwheelsfl 03-19-2018 08:09 PM

Ive got a bunch of brand new rigid black rubrail i need to find a home for, takes 3/4 stainless insert. Let me know if youre interested.

This is it

LOL - I get a little bit OCD when it comes to working on projects. I used to restore Muscle Cars so a lot if this is second nature to me. I generally start with a vision in my head and then HAVE to get it out of my head. I am generally not happy until I see the finished results. I did the attached 1969 Road Runner (by myself including all body work, mechanical & electrical work and the entire interior) in less than a year so this boat is nothing LOL

DonV 03-20-2018 08:30 AM

Show off!!!! :) Very nice work and yes I'm jealous.

Don V - Thanks for the compliment. That car was the biggest challenge I have ever undertaken. Most of the ones I have done were no where near that bad. I have been messing with Mopars since I was 16 and basically quit (cold turkey) about 3 years ago because the cars have just gotten too expensive for me to do and people don't want to pay the money it costs to really restore a car down here. The owner of that car actually gave me artistic license with regards to how to put it together once he told me what color he wanted the body. I decided on the painted scoop and white interior. I worked part time on it, nights and weekends and ended up with about 1000 hours into it - a bunch of which I did not get a dime for because the owner really could not afford what it should have cost.

One of these days, I hope to build another car for myself. I haven't had one since 2010 and even then, I had to sell it before I finished it due to financial reasons. The Challenger in the picture is the last one I really built for myself back in 2005. Sold that car to invest in a business and ended up loosing my @$$. If I were to show off, you would be shocked how many cars I have owned/built. Easily 20+ Dodge Challengers, 10+ Cudas, 8-10 Dusters and plenty more through the years.

My handle on a bunch of car forums is ChallengerGary. I might have to change it to ChallengerlessGary :(

:D Can't have people wondering what kind of boat she is :D

Vezo, Part II 03-20-2018 10:32 AM

Damn Bro! That’s a serious addiction and some quality skills there! I’ve spent two years with a buddy rebuilding his moms 1971 Pontiac LeMans Sport droptop. Still not complete. This August 15, opening day deer hunting here, will be three years. She passed unexpectedly last fall and was not aware of the project. Has been ready for paint since last August, hopefully going next Tuesday. One owner, 147k original miles, AC, and matching numbers. He was a Master Carpenter, and started tinkering with this project for his older brother, after refurbing for the second time, a 1950 Chevy pick up in-line six. Built it a little hot and just now getting to the resto-mod disc brake conversion to stop the damn thing!!!

So tell me again why the rub rail is no longer usable?

Michael.

Topflitegraphics 03-20-2018 02:58 PM

Best modification you can make on any old car is disc brakes!

As far as the old rub rail, it is kind of beat up in a bunch of spots and looks old (to say the least).

JESUS you’re quick! Are you ordering a new recessed hand rail in 316 SS? Mine is aluminum and capable of coming back, but the SS bow rail on my ‘76 Seafari is friggin beautiful!.! Any thoughts?

Where do you find the SS hand rail? I was actually planning on reusing it and maybe painting it white but I like the sound of some nice shiny Stainless

Vezo, Part II 03-21-2018 02:21 PM

(Raymond) Martin Marine Design is 30 min away. I’m sure he could duplicate them but it would be Expensive! But he welds rolls of dimes like nobody’s business!

Michael.

I have all but maybe 10 ft of ss insert and will need to turn the transom curve.
This place rocks.
As always.

Eliminated some more ugly yesterday. Still have to to the mid section and lower unit but the cowling was really starting to bother me. I will design some custom touches for the cowl shortly...

jorgeinmiami 03-23-2018 09:55 AM

Looking good!!

I wish I had the time and talent to make mine look as good as yours.

We have the same boat and I'm hoping to get mine done sometime this year, but life has gotten in the way.

Topflitegraphics 03-23-2018 10:20 AM

Thanks - the main thing about the time is I have decided to put in at least an hour a day as the weather allows. Since the boat is stored right outside my shop door, I can sneak in some time whenever work flow allows it. It is amazing what you can get done in a couple of hours each day.

Yesterday, I sanded more of the deck and then got busy stripping and painting the cowling. Total time was less than two hours. Left the shop and made it home before 7pm. This is the real benefit to having it at my work. In the past, my boat storage/work yard was 20 minutes from my house and/or work. It changes everything when it is about 10 steps away...

jorgeinmiami 03-23-2018 02:55 PM

Since your on a roll I'll bring mine and park it outside. Lol

Worked for about an hour yesterday and then about 3 more this morning. Got the cutting board/engine cover made. Then finished off the trim and face panel for the splash well. Calling it a day since I now have wet paint laying drying in the shop.

Yesterday, I completed installing the finish panels I am using to replace the carpet the factory used on the gunwales. Will do some additional sanding and prep work later today.

Bigshrimpin 03-29-2018 07:15 PM

Top - One area that you might want to inspect/address while you're in there working is the stringer on the left side where the fuel hose routes through. I have yet to see an original 20 MA floor that hasn't cracked in this spot.

finished prepping the new finish panels for paint. Now I need to do a little bit of fairing on the rod holders as whoever made and installed them ages ago did not do the prettiest job.

Also, installed the rub rail last night. Upon further review, there are a couple of spots that I need to adjust but overall, it totally changes the look of the boat. Once I make the adjustments, I will install the inserts later today.

Took it easy this weekend. Finished off the splash well cover/front panel and trim plus scored (2) brand new deck hatches for $100 :D

Yesterday, I filled the holes from the previous deck hatches and then started to install the insert in the rub rail. Stopped when it looked like my thumb was about to burst LOL

Today, I finished the rub rail insert (with no additional blisters) and also made some custom placards for the engine cowling. The old bulky lettering that was on it was pretty trashed and left behind a bunch of holes. These placards will cover the holes and follow the color scheme :D

So, today my neighbor started to modify the t-top to mount the console and deck for me. Pulled it off so that he can modify the legs accordingly.

Then, I went ahead and shot the gunwales and fish box with a fresh coat (or two) of white. Tomorrow I plan on doing the non-skid on the deck :D

I put the placards on the cowling but cannot do anything this afternoon due to the thunderstorms :(

Good news, though, my neighbor plans on finishing up the welding on my t-top tomorrow!

CaptLloyd 04-16-2018 10:17 PM

What product did you use for the non-skid?
