Yes, the 02-04 suzuki 115's & 140's had corrosion issues. The one i was considering was spotless. It had been stored in the guy's garage for over 10 years. That being said, he has a deposit on it already. There is a 2005 on THT that is a little bit more money but I still might consider that one. The way I look at it, if I get Suzuki 140 4s, I won't be looking for a newer motor for a few years. If I go old school, I figure 1-2 years and then I would want to repower again...

I have had 2 200 HPDI on 2 diff Seacrafts and personally I never had any problems with either one of them

I believe your 21' SC is vastly different than a 20' MA as far as the weight they were designed to carry off the back. Your CG is more in tune with the added weight of more modern engines.

They do perform amazingly well, I will give them that.
Problems start when they need repair.

Have replaced several air compressors over the years (I work for a boatyard on Cape Cod) and each time you're looking at about a grand or more.
Up here in the land of Ethanol fuel, replacing VST filters etc is also expensive.
Just my .02 cents USD.

But at 475 #'s seems to be more weight than I want to mount behind my transom or am I wrong?

Topflitegraphics 06-23-2019 09:50 AM

In an interesting twist of fate, my wife actually suggested that I just finance a brand new motor on my birthday last week. She said instead of trying to find a good used motor for as little as possible. I should look at new ones. She said that I deserve to treat myself. She knows how much being on the water means to me and said that since I have not had the best luck w used motors, why not get a brand new one w a warranty...

all I know is I want to be on the water asap. I refuse to miss another summer on the water

decisions decisions decisions

A gift for Topflight’s Wife

As I graduated from high school I saw a nice used 61 Vette. My dad agreed to make the downpayment and my monthly payments wold be like $3 more than for the Tempest I was driving. But the final approval rested with my mother. After she said yes I bought her a necklace with a couple dangling pearls on it. She never tookit off til it fell apart years later. Topflight, treat her right

Tried to find it but no luck. Only ones I see mentioned are 18's. Thought it might make a decent 3rd option...

DonV 06-24-2019 08:01 PM

Are the eTecs the new G2's? I can't see any way a new engine design and new release will beat the Zuke price. Check the Tohatsu/Honda BFT 150, Northeast Marine St. Pete.

Topflitegraphics 06-24-2019 09:10 PM

Isn't the Honda kind of heavy for a 20'?

DonV 06-24-2019 10:02 PM

My catalog says it's 478# for the Tohondasu 150, 25" shaft, the Suzuki is 421# for the 140 25" shaft, however one of the tests with a DF150TX is 485# (?). My neighbor across the canal has a Honda 150 on his 22' Aquasport CCP, he has well over a thousand hours on it. Good luck!

Topflitegraphics 06-24-2019 11:03 PM

DonV, the DF140 is an inline 4. The DF150 is a V6, hence the heavier weight

DonV 06-25-2019 06:49 AM

Actually the Suzukis are four cylinders all the way to 200 hp.

Topflitegraphics 06-25-2019 08:06 AM

Stand corrected. Wonder why the huge weight difference then...

DonV 06-25-2019 08:55 AM

Well the 140 is 124.7 cubic inches @ 405# and the 150 is 174.9 ci @ 522#, I guess the that extra 50ci has seriously heavy pistons! :)

Topflitegraphics 06-25-2019 04:42 PM

Bass Pro Shops is right around the corner from me. They sell Mercury's. Any recommendation on which one of those I should price out for comparison? I want to make the right decision for me and my boat but so far, I am leaning hard towards a new 140 Suzuki...

DonV 06-25-2019 05:15 PM

This is gotten into a "me and you" conversation. The Merc 150 at 455#, 3.0L is what I would price. Do a lot of price checking, BPS is proud of their engines. I priced a 250 hp two years ago and they were #1.....as in the highest!!

Topflitegraphics 06-25-2019 06:04 PM

Don V - I plan on doing as much pricing as I can. I have never spent this kind of money on a toy for me. I guess I am a cheap bastard like your avatar says you are LOL

Brian at IM is at a great price rigged for a 140. 11,200 OTD if financed by Friday.

Zuke is raising pricing a tad.

412#s.
Dry.

jorgeinmiami 06-25-2019 10:11 PM

Jose venero at bass pro ft Lauderdale

Say his cousin sent you

Topflitegraphics 06-26-2019 10:34 AM

Been reading on here and elsewhere about the Mercury 115 w Command Thrust lower unit. Seems like a great fit for the boat since it weighs a lot less than anything else out there - 365#'s. 72Potter seems to have had great results with this combo. As I have mentioned, I don't need a speed demon and everybody keeps saying here you don't need much HP to move this hull and get up on plane. Going to price that out today as well. Hope to make my decision by tomorrow...

I was talking to member Capt Lloyd today as he has one on his ole 20.
He is a yacht cap and has a great understated knowledge of these hulls.
He and many others here love the Zuke 140 on the 20.

I learned that the hard way. Here in SC if we buy the package, boat/motor, tax is capped at $500 (I think, used to be $300 for sure). I re-powered 2 years ago and had to pay full sales tax....9%. Ouch!

Basketcase 06-28-2019 08:36 AM

Have you received pricing on the new Etec 3 cyl 150? I'm realllllllly curious to see what that one is going to sell for. I was sold on the Merc 115 with CT, but this is a real contender now, unless he price is absurd.

jorgeinmiami 06-28-2019 10:25 AM

Just priced a Suzuki 140 25 inch shaft. $9100 plus rigging

Gables motor sports in miami

How much do they charge for rigging and labor?
