Great job on the project and those fuel numbers are impressive. As is 2.6 on the old 225. Best of luck with the Merc. These V8's seem like real winners!

Thanks Ken. When I repowered with a new fuel efficient 4-stroke 300 HP motor my goal was 3.2 mpg cruise. My old 2-stroke Yamaha 225 was around 2.6. So I'm VERY happy with the ~ 3.4 mpg I'm seeing now at 30 mph cruise. That's a 30% improvement in fuel mileage vs. 2 stroke. Does that sound about right?

Yes, that seems about right and completely expected considering the tech in these new motors. I ran the numbers on my 300 after converting everything to nautical MPH and you are almost 5% better across the board in average speeds we run. Make sure to keep tabs as you start to run trips with an average fishing load as it will be interesting how the numbers hold. The Rev 4 is a great prop with lots of stearn lift and looks like a good match for your set up.

I'm not sure how it will go with Merc but my Suzuki gained fuel economy after the the beak in timers hit. I think that is when the ECM allowed the motor to go into lean burn mode. Keep us posted as you put more hours on it.

Congratulation .....great achievement .

Incredible motor! Great execution on the transom and dialing it in! Bahamas 2021!!

joshmon71 12-08-2020 05:14 PM

is that a verado? impressive numbers! and jealous!

my 05 275HP verado runs about 13gph at 4500 rpm loaded. ~4200 tabs full down full load is pretty much lowest planing speed....this is loaded 125 gallons fuel, gear, 2 guys. no livewell weight.
17P Rev4....

enjoy!

UPDATE -- Earlier this week the weather was pretty good in SC, low 60's and sunny so I decided to spend an afternoon at the lake with my kids. The motor ran great and seems to have a little better performance since I've put a few more hours on it. With me, 2 kids and 90 gallons of fuel the cruise was at 28mph at 3.83mpg. We took a short blast to WOT and got up to 53mph (speedo reading off my GPS via NEMA 2000) when trimmed up and wound out to 6,000 RPMs.

DonV 12-30-2020 10:49 PM

Very nice Jimbo!! :) I need about 3750 rpms to get to the 28 mph, that is the boat's happy number!!!

DonV 02-10-2021 01:12 PM

What's this I see Mercury is coming out with a V-12 600hp, you should have waited to re-power!! :) :)

Already taking measurements.....

DonV 02-10-2021 02:56 PM

Yeah Ken, the only measurement I'm thinking about is the price tag!!!! Another engine for the top 2% of buyers, maybe 1%. However those folks don't really care about the $$$$, just have to have the latest and greatest!!

Come on power ball........:)

I guess somebody had to fill the void Marine 7 left. Read Volvo was shutting them down.

Snookerd 02-10-2021 06:32 PM

Wow...put one of those 600's on the back of a 27????

77SceptreOB 02-11-2021 05:38 PM

This is a BIG motor. 1,260 lbs (20" shaft)

How's the V8 running? Updates appreciated.

joshmon71 02-26-2021 04:14 PM

im running a 2005 verado 275(oem 250 with a 275 ecu now). it weighs more than the 300 v8. think the 300 is about 50-60lbs lighter. should be fine far as weight....

i have a 2020 300 v8 merc used w/ 295 hours + 5 year warranty picking up in next few weeks, but wont have an update running it till the wrap comes off here in wellfleet.

The 300-V8 is running great and I’m very happy with it so far. Performance numbers are shown on the previous page.

Just had my engines 20 hour service done. Same procedure as 100 hour service. They said everything looked good. Cost $390, not too bad.

I can see having the dealer do the initial but for long term is there any issue with doing your own maintenance? Besides engine and LU oil and plugging it into a laptop I don’t know what else they would do on a 20 hour service.

Yes, I agree going forward I will probably do some or most of the routine maintenance. For the 20 hour service they scan the computer for codes, which in my case there were none. The rest of the service was changing the engine oil and oil filter, changing out all of the fuel filter(s) and replace the LU gear oil and lube the motor as necessary. Since my hydraulic steering was new and installed by them, they went over that to make sure all was correct. As I understand Mercury is pretty picky on the 20 hour check/service. I want to make sure it was performed on time and by a Mercury authorized dealer so that later on in the warranty that there was no loopholes Mercury or the dealer could try to slide through. Hopefully that would never happen but I was willing to pay $390 to insure compliance.

kmoose 04-13-2021 01:45 PM

I think it was a good call no doubt. I would though discuss with them the fact that you are considering doing your own maintenance and what kind of records needed to maintain the warranty. Better yet, see if there is a maintenance manual available that spells out the fluid and interval requirements.

Loos like you were right up against WOT 6K on the last run with the 18 pitch Rev4. I finally got my 2020 used to me 300 Vrod installed. I already had a Rev4 17P and need to get another Rev4. Did you check out the Rev4 XP 18.5P by chance? with your numbers I am thinking of that. The Rev4 XP Pro Lab finish 19 makes me wonder 2 but its very pricey. My cav plate is nicely in clean water and looks great to me, it is higher than my old verado a bit. No blow out on miami vice hard turn at speed.

I may try for the 18.5 XP. Merc says something about 100-150 more rpm for same pitch for XP with longer barrell and some lab work, another 100-150 for the Pro lab finish (so 200-300 rpm??). i value lower planing speed #1 though not top end and mid range fuel. May have to call merc or propgods, am trying to get an idea of the differences between these 3 Rev4 models.

I had to get an extender bracket from Bobs Machine shop for the 30" XXL as my armstrong is for a 25" shaft. Worked out great and way cheaper than a jackplate.

engine rocks very happy.
