Wind Shield...on going saga part 52
 

After getting the wood frame worked out the way I liked it, the next part was to figure on how to get it to lay flat on the dash and combing.

After a lot of soul searching I decided that the right thing to do was fair in flat spots on the dash and combing. I really did not want to do that, but in the long run it was the only workable solution to make it look like it was meant to be on the boat, and not just an after thought.

Also if you look closely you see the old windshield plexi resting spot...

Flatten the top of the combing(it had a soft s curve in it and fill in the plexi groove.

Add a ton a fairing compound to get a radius going.

Now I have ordered my White Oak and will make another small mock up of the corner pieces and then finish up the final fairing and hopefully it will look like it was made for the boat.

Fairing ='s put it on and take it off.:D

I know your planning on this BUT...make sure to get some glass on the fairing compound. That much will surly crack. I made this mistake :(

The last couple pics look like it will look great, getting there it looks kinda tough but I think you made the right decision.

Thanks for bring that up...I forgot to mention that. I have put in some 10 oz. glass over the fairing compound about half way thru. Most likely I will lay over some 4 0z when the fairing is all done, and then skim coat it one more time. That should keep it from chipping or cracking.

Besides sanding and priming I thought I would share this with you.

Last year (maybe it was 2 years ago :confused:) I bought this old Morse Steering Wheel.

As it turns out the taper in the wheel hub was too big. Or the taper on the steering shaft was too small (ying or yang) so the wheel would bottom out and under stress would not turn the out drive.

We are talking 5/8 to 3/4...I tried wrapping some alum shim stock around the spindle to fatten it up, but it really wasn't the right solution.

I called one of my buddies who owns a tool and die back in the rust belt , where they still make stuff, and told him my dilemma. His reply was no sweat just send it up and I will make it work.

There is only so much sanding priming and fairing a guy can do...before he blanks out.

So my fun project was to fabricate a glove(junk) box . When I first bought the boat the PO just cut the dash and basically tortured the thing. Look close it is not even centered.

Is that an aft access to port quarter storage?
What is you plan for the cuddy. Going back to supporting stanchions or are you gonna close off bulkhead like 3rdDay did?
