Re: My first
Hey guys, its been a little while since i have updated you on my progress. Well progress has been slow, mainly due to the weather and the fact that it has been shrunk rapped. I got the windows from Wynne and installed them. They went in very easy, and from what i can tell being inside a shrunk wrapped boat they look good. It will be like unwrapping a late xmas present when the shrink wrap comes off in the spring. Also the electronics, throttle and everything else that makes it go will hopefully start goiing in later this month. I spoke with the guys who will be doing all of that and he said there would be no problem in having the console tilt forward. We sat on the boat and went through what i wanted and he said 2-4 days for completion. Maybe with my tax refund i can get some other toys for her. Well thats it for now. Happy New Year.
|
Re: My first
How long did it take to get your window's from when you ordered them?
|
Re: My first
It wasent too long. They say 3 to 4 weeks. Mine arrived in just over 3 weeks. They were also cheaper than i had expected. Very easy to put in. Seems to be a very good product.

I used 3M 101 to install mine. I also coated all the stainless screws with Teff Gel. |
Re: My first
Well, just another update: The boat is now uncovered and back inside where the electrical work will be done. The following pictures are kind of blurry for some reason. sorry. But how do you guys think the tanks look, are they original. I have read a bunch about not foaming around the tanks after they have been replaced. I guess someday they along with the foam will come out. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...1234/p4058.jpg
This is how the engine compartment looks now with all the old un-organized wires everywhere. She will be much cleaner later this week(i hope) http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...1234/p4059.jpg And here she is with the doghouse tilted for easy access. I wanted a few shots of the console upright with the windows in, but that will have to wait. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...1234/p4060.jpg |
Re: My first
Where did you find the boat? Was it local?
|
Re: My first
Chance
The only thing about tanks is that you cant see where there might be trouble Was the foam damp?? The top looks fine but there might be corrosion where you cant see it. down along the sides and the bottom. Places that if wet never dry out. The other thing ... How hard is it to get to your tanks once the boat is back together ?? It would be a pain in the a$$ to rip her apart again cause a tank is leaking and it needs to be replaced. |
Re: My first
thanx for putting that picture of your tanks up chance. i have never had that part of my deck up- Im also curious if anyone knows if that muffler can go bad ?? I have heard from a couple of folks that it wont- but Im not convinced- iwhen i do pull my deck piece i will replace the tanks for sure- i think i will do some rudder work this spring as well- got some play in mine- that pilothouse looks awesome- you ought to put you one of those heaters that run off your freshwater cooling also- love mine- keeps the boys warm when im running even without curtains-lol- keep the pix and updates coming!!! craig

Re: My first
Scott, I don't plan on replacing the tanks this year but probably next year. The foam on top is not wet but I have no idea around the sides and underneath. Hopefully it will be good enough for this year. To expose the tanks is just one piece that is flush and was sealed with some sort of silicone. It came out very easy. I just cut the joint with a utility knife to free it up and out she came. I will put it back the same way. Not exactly ideal but it is nice to access that area of the boat.
Hey miles, sorry about the anchor locker template, it must have been thrown away with a bunch of other crap. I don't know how long you have had your boat but if it has been a while and the muffler is still good, hopefully the same can be said for my boat. The risers and elbows were replaced about 6 months before I bought her. I have the same rudder work to do as well, she has a little play in her, maybe 1/16 of an inch or less. Again that may wait till next year, but if it is a water tight issue I will do it sooner. I thought about the heater thing and I left some room for it on the console but this year is pretty much gonna be a sea trial year. Since i have only been underway on her once for about 30 min. And that was with the old t-top and other things that I have since changed. Even the curtains will wait till next year. Things that will be comming in March MAY include cutlass bearing, rudder post, new deck plates. Mainly things that will keep her upright. I will post pics as soon as I can of the electrical work. I also put a hatch 13X24 (i think) in the front of the console abouve the seat for storage and access. I was acutally down your way last week miles. I had a coast guard class down in yorktown. But I stayed with a buddy of mine in Chesapeake. Sorry I didn't look you up but i was very busy. They still bitin down there? Looks like rain for you guys, maybe some snow comming soon. Looks like us northern guys got some more white stuff comming. Damn Grounhog!!!!!!!! |
Re: My first
No big deal on the template dude. it would have been nice if you hadnt been so busy to have gotton together at least for a cool one and maybe took ya catchin. fishing is still hot on west winds, there are a lot of really big fish (30 to an occasional 50 pounder being being caught right now, mostly during the week when i am at work and cant go , but i might be getting slick... i mean sick later this week when the wind goes west again. A couple of the local seacraft boys who lurk but do not post , have been in some really nice fish here recently. as far as the weather goes- today was supposed to be opening day of college baseball season for him but his double header was /has been snow cancelled. we are looking for 100% rain today with a little snow tonight. hopefully all gone by tomorrow- i cant stand the stuff- makes the boat deck icey when trying to fish!!!! Take care- craig

Re: My first
Well, The doghouse is nearing completeion and I get more and more excited with every screw and wire that goes in. Here are some pictures of the rewiring and electronics installation as of today 17 Feb. 2006.

Re: My first
It coming together nicely.
|
Re: My first
Tuna on the deck soon!!!!!!!!!!! Well 5 months anyway...........Long winter.
|
Re: My first
Well another change to the plan. I was going to keep my old sitex fish finder onboard, i just needed to find a transducer and power cabel for it. Eventually i would have found one but I decided to say screw it. Everything else in the doghouse is brand new, I might as well get a new finder too. I went with the Furuno fcv 667, with the thru hull ducer. So the only thing that came off the the old console that is now in the doghouse is the helm. I even had to get a new helm pump. Hopefully the wiring will be done by the end of the week. I then have to take it down to the cape to have the finder and transducer installed by the company I bought it from. I plan on splashing her as soon as I can after the wiring is done, if only for a shake down. Can't wait to start seeing some new pictures of other classics getting wet for the first time this year.
|
Re: My first
you've done a really nice job with this boat....can't wait to see her underway.
|
Re: My first
I thought this was an interesting angle so i snaped a picture.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...1234/p4081.jpg Also with the exception of the new fish finder the wiring will be done tommorow the 17th of march. Next year I will remove the gunnel cap and re core the one soft spot and remove all the bow dodger attachement points. Maybe some flush bow lights and cleats. Oh yeah and a swivel rod holder on the bow for the giants. Also, any one have a furuno FCV 667 finder. That is the one I picked up and it looks like a good machine. |
Re: My first
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...1234/p4083.jpg
Well the weather is getting nicer which means more time to work on the boat. This weekend was very productive. I re-cored a deck hatch, filled and glass some holes in the storage area in front of the console (where a fuel tank once was), removed the old transducer and block so a new one can be installed, and pressure washed and painted the bottom. Next week I need to fill the old transducer hole and than redrill a smaller hole for the new ducer, minor gelcoat stuff and get the new ducer installed. After that, I am done. I will probably re-core some more hatches later this year as time permits. |

Re: My first
I thought it was the transducer that determined how well you mark the bottom? I will be going with the furuno transucer made by the Japenese. It is the dual freq ducer 50/200. My father has the exact setup on his lobster boat which he has taken tuna and cod fishing.

Re: My first
The 667 is only 300watts . . .
This is a decent overview for fishfinder info: http://www.cabelas.com/information/c...onarGuide.html I thought I posted these yesterday, but I guess not. You might appreciate these charts if you haven't seen them already. Chart of Stellwagen Marine Sanctuary: http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/of00-410/pdf/topo.pdf Lat/Long of all the spots on chart: http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/of00-410/names/frames.htm |
Re: My first
Well, she is just about done (for this year) The transducer is installed in the new block that I built and all that is left is to wire it to the machine which I hope will be done this week. After that I need to tow it back to Metan marine for some fine tuning and to run in to make sure everything is good. Soon after that you will see some pictures of her in the water. I can't wait, and I hear the squid and some small keepers are showing up in the sound. Wish i had some more pictures but not much as changed physicaly sine the last pics. Hope to have some underway pictures soon.

Re: My first
Alright so this is how it went. Put the boat in the water for the first time on friday. She fired right up. GREAT!! 5 minutes later the was coolant spraying all over the place, she had overheated in under 5 minutes. Sea Suction was open, so i suspected the impeller, or thermostat. I pulled the thermostat first becuase that was easy. It was fine. Next I wresteled with the impeller. Miles and any other inboard guys may know how much of a pain in the arse it is to replace that thing with no room to work. That took roughly 5 hours to take out, and now being sunday i had to try every marina on the cape to find the right impeller. Finnaly i had it, 2 hours later she was installed and ready for the water again. Now back at the ramp, fired her up and about 5 minutes later the the temp was climbing into the red, so i shut it down for the weekend. The only thing i can think of is that the old impeller pieces are clogging the lines. Are there any other possiblities? It is a very simple raw water system, what am i missing. Frustraionnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!! Please help. She did look good in the water, but that is about all the nice things i can say about her right now. Why would the impeller burn out first time in the water but last year when i bought her and seatriled everything was fine. the only thing i can think off is from the time i seatrialered her to the time i actully picked her up was about 3 weeks. I don't know if something happened from seatrail to delivery.

Re: My first
is it pumping water? do you have a sea strainer?
you could have a bad heat exchanger or an air lock in your coolant system... |
Re: My first
Definitely open heat exchanger and see if those pesky chunks made it there. It doesn't take much at all to fry that impeller. Might be a good time to check the risers for blockage. Not fun but the more I find out the more I see that they are another preventive maintenance item.
Great source of info for the mercruisers is boater ed forum. I think it's part of boatfix.com. Very helpful bunch there-kinda like here. Goodluck, Doug |
Re: My first
hey Dude- probably one of 3 things- answer a couple of questions for me-
Is your raw water pump the johnson type that is attached to your flywheel or the stand alone type?? a) if it is attached to your flywheel (johnson kind) what happens is there can be grooves put into the brass cover of it and you can replace impellars all day and it still wont work. When the motor is cool just remove the discharge side of the pump, start her up for a couple of seconds and see if she is pumping. If not just cut your loses anbd buy a new pump. Been there done that. b)Transmission cooler- pull the inlet side hose off the cooler and stick your finger in the cooler and see if there is any trash - the area is pretty small and it doesnt take much trash to clog it up. c) this is what i really think your problem was and you probably burnt up your impellar because of it. You probably got an airlock via your seawater strainer. -( verify it by visually seeing it pump like i described earlier- pulling the discharge hose (be sure your bilge pump is working, lol). With the motor RUNNING, open up your strainer and you should see flow. Now close it- thats it- what happens is if you open it with the motor not running it will cause that vapor lock when you start it up. Thats why you need to open then close it while the motor is running. I doubt the heat exchanger is the main problem- it could be causing some but the little oil cooler/tranny heat exchanger is a good possibility. Check these things out and let me know- craig |
Re: My first
Thanks miles, that is all awesome info. I have the johnson type and i will be sure to check all of the areas you have suggested. If it is just air locked should i bother to try to find the pieces of the old impeller? Also since i put in the new impeller and it still overheated, what are the chances that the new impeller is now junk??
|
Re: My first
yes- try to find and remove the old pieces- should be in heat x-changer,-- hopefully pieces never made it to your risers.- and again if that cover on the johnson pump is grooved dont even bother with a new impellar- just buy and replace the pump- it only runs around 150 for a replacement-generic and you wont have to worry about it. good luck- let us know-
|
Re: My first
miles, when you say cover on the pump is grooved. I have a stainless looking real thin piece of metal that allows the bolts to go through it and into the impeller housing. Is that the cover you are talking about, or is it something else. And when you say to possibly replace the pump do you mean the housing and shaft assembly that the impeller sits in? Thanks for any clarification. I am getting better with the mechanical stuff, but still consider myself an ametuer. If i take something apart i can put it back to gether but some of the proper mechanical terminology is still lacking. Thanks again.
|
Re: My first
yes that is the cover i am talking about- when i say replace the pump I am talking about the whole assembly-impellar, housing, all of it- after ahwile the bearings will usually go bad as well and they are more of a pain in the ass to try and rebuild than to just can and buy a new one. there will be 5 or 6 big allen headed bolts where it attaches to the flywheel- undo these- make sure you correctly match up the pump then shitcan the old one- (i always keep a good spare one on the boat). did you see groovesd in the cover when you removed it (btw- it should be brass?)i would post some pix for you but my scanner is broken-
|
Re: My first
Thanks miles, I will try to post some pics tonight.
|
Re: My first
by "chance" (lol) you didnt save any of your old motor mounts did you??? Im in need of some of the old style and having a difficult time so far trying to find them
|
Re: My first
Hey miles, i didn't change any of the motor mounts (yet) sorry. However here are some pictures of what i am up against. I pulled the houses of the impeller housing in an effort to find the old impeller pieces. I also checked the heat exchanger with no pieces sited. However in the discharge side of the hose coming off the impeller i did find these: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...1234/p4088.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...1234/p4092.jpg Also since I was already pulling hoses off i figured i might as well double check the new impeller i put in after the first one burned out. as you will recall, i put this impeller in and restarted a few days ago and she overheated again. As i found, the impeller i had put in a few days ago was now trash as well. So now my questions will mainly stem from this next picture: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...1234/p4093.jpg As you can see i hope, the left hand side says right side out, and the other side says left side out. Now just so i make sure to put my hoses back in the right way... my engine is right hand rotation. Does that mean that my discharge hose will go where it says right hand out? i should have remembered and marked it when i took it out the first time but being a rookie i didn't. Now many of you are proably saying get a damn service manual, which i am currently waiting on. This next picture is how the housing looked when i replaced the first impeller. the left hose attachment is where i thought the supply side was intially and that is how i put it back. Also since my engine is right hand rotation does it mater which way i curve the fins when i install the impeller in the housing? Sorry about all the questions but i want this thing right and don't want to have to worry about it. So from what i can see these are my potential problems: air lock, backwards hoses, grove in plate. Please help, i want her in the water, striper are everywhere. Thank you to all. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...1234/p4090.jpg |
Re: My first
hey bud- the left hand port in your pic (rh means right handed motor rotation) is out, the right hand port in the pic is inlet side for your motor. you dont have to even start your motor to see- just stick that inlet side hose in a five gallon bucket of water and turn her over- the water will come quick and strong if the pump is good. the pump impellar will usually correct itself if you have them (the fins) in backwards. like i said before check the pump for water flow first to eliminate any more pump questions.
|
Re: My first
Thank you miles, I changed the housing and grooved plate along with another impeller and tried the inlet hose in a bucket of water thing and she pump water. I only let it run for about 5 seconds but she was pumping. So now since i got the hoses off i will replace those as they are showing signs of wear. I hope i have this thing figured out, i am planning on putting her in the water again this weekend, rain or not. I will let you know how it goes. Again thank you Craig.
|
Re: My first
Quote:
This could very well be part of your problem with the impeller self distructing. Figure out which way the motor turn's and then the correct rotation of the pump. Install the impeller with the vane's so they will NOT flip over, also lube the impeller with some white lithum grease when you install it. |
Re: My first
SHE WORKS!!!! Put her in the water today for about 45 minutes while she was still on the trailer fired her up and ran it for about 30 minutes. The temp only got as high as just below half and then started to drop abit. I will take her for her maiden voyage thursday afternoon proably, for a shake down, if all goes well she will be heading to nantucket for the weekend. Thanks for all the help guys, especially you miles. What a great site, thanks trayder!!

Re: My first
Chance,
Glad you got things going. I can't help but add, I may be of the extreme, but I pull the raw water system apart every year, including manifolds, risers and inspect the cooler inlets. The manifolds and risers get looked at and re-painted and the pump gets pulled and impeller replaced every other year. The cooling system is probably the most important and can get clogged or corrosion can take over quickly. The fuel system is probably next in line. Anyway, you probably learned some things and thanks to the help of Miles, you got through it. |
Re: My first
Thanks Mark, that is all good advice and i will probably start following that schedule after this year. Being in the Coast Guard we pretty much live by the idea of preventitive maintenance. Mark, I was actually down your neck of the woods today working some of the buoys in the eastern and western channels, pretty nasty area down there if your not used to it.
