Re: sanding and sanding and sanding

Hey GFS I got the latches from west marine they are boxed in a west marine box but they are Taco latches. I am probably going to use a gasket material from taco to. once I get the boat painted I will start looking around for the righjt gasket material.

Strick THat is correct I used the multimaster to bed the coring. THe bait tank is going in front of the console.since I shifted the console back I will have room in front of it. back to sanding and fairing.

billythekid 04-06-2008 10:41 PM

TOP SECRET!

Well I did a 8 hours of sanding today and did what is called "Poormans priming". I dont remember seeing it on here with all the restores. I learned this from a freind who had restored alot of boats. Basically from when I sanded the orginal paint of the boat there were some deep scratches from turning the sander on its side all over the hull. Here is what I did to smooth out the hull. I wiped the hull down with a wet rag with water to remove the dust. I went to my work truck and took out a half gallon of PVC primer. I dumped some in a mixing cup and with a rag wiped down the whole hull. I let it dry for about 5 minutes and went to down with the 220 on the palm sander with vaccum hook up. :D Make sure that if you do it you keep the sander flat, the whole point is to find the low spots..

Great Thread.

You can also use a product called DYKEM it is a layout fluid, a little goes a long way.

Primer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

got 4 coats (2.5 gallons) of awlgrip 545 epoxy primer on the boat over the week end. I was really happy with the results, the 60 hours of sanding and fairing paid off. The boat was sprayed with a Binks 2 qt pressure pot. the nice thing about this set up is you mix 2 quarts at a time also the gun can be turned any position and it keeps spraying. This helps out for spraying the rod and anchor lockers. There were very few runs in the primer, (they are already sanded out).

Boat looks great. I'm interested in your scuppers. Which ones are you using?

billythekid 04-22-2008 02:09 PM

Re: Primer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reelclassic I am going with Aqua mist on the hull. interior is going to be snow white with a contrast color on the non skid that hasnt been decided yet. I might get a little tricky and shoot the rod lockers the same color as the floor. I havent decided yet.

Zach the scuppers are going be be sea stops, they are a fiberglass rienforced plastic with a 12 degrees offset top to bottom so they stay closed until pressure is pushed against them from the inside.

Re: Primer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Billythekid,
I've got a quick question for you. Is the pvc primer that purple stuff that comes with the pvc glue and do you have to sand the stuff off (in the low spots) before you fill with fairing compound. Thanks -will

billythekid 04-23-2008 06:24 PM

Re: Primer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Will yes it is the same primer that you get with pvc glue. I think the dykem(spelling?) is darker and might be better for the job. I have an endless supply of primer. The first side I used a rag (make sure you were gloves) The second side I rolled it on with a 6 inch mini roller and it went on much darker and much easier. I would advise taking a pencil circling the low spots and then sand the primer off. I had a little problem with bleed through on my Awlgrip 545 primer. As Strick says " Nothing a little Primer cant fix!" I just had to lay two more addition coats over it to cover.

billythekid 04-24-2008 10:58 PM

outside for a photo op

I rolled the boat outside today for a bunch of wet sanding, and who ever siad you cant get sunburn in april in NJ was wrong. I got about 80% of the boat wet sanded so another half day and we will be ready. Paint came in today along with another gallon of primer and converter that I went and picked up this morning. So that make alomst a $1000 in paint.

some more work, Non skid , console modification

Before painting the boat I put the non skid down on the topsides Before I did it I had to spend a whole day taping everything off with vinyl tape. This was an extremely long processs to get right. It only took a half hour to put it down.

While I am waiting for paint,I decided cut a bunch of holes in the console for all the rigging I also cut a bunch of holes in the boat. I decided I didnt want the flange on the console and I wanted it shorter. so I cut 3 inches off of the console and I am much happier with the way it looks

Gome some work done after real work this afternoon.I put the console down on a piece of formica to laminate against. FINALLY GETTING SOMEWHERE!!!!

Well here we go I got alot done last week and I still had to work a 57 hour week. Alot of late hours were put in. I started with the console rigging while it was still out of the boat. I drilled and screwed the wire looms in place before I started any wiring. I have watched many boat builders do this over the years and it still makes the neatest job. After the panduit clamps were in place it was time to mount and rig the electronics, gauges, battery switch, washdown, water seperator. I also roughed in the battery cables for later.

This is where it made me feel like I was making some progress. The inside liner was painted awlgrip snow white. then deck and hatches were taped off and sanded 120. The decks were painted with a contrast color awlgrip Moondust. It took about 3 hours too tape the deck off. I am not the best at taping, :D but I was happy with the way it came out.

Re: FINALLY GETTING SOMEWHERE!!!!

Strick I wish I had that steady of a hand, I went to my local sign shop and had them print out the vinyl lettering. I just made sure I peeled it up before the paint dryed. I worked alot better than I thought it would, there was zero bleed through.

Mark thanks for all the positive comments. I have really enjoyed redoing the boat, The next boat I will do will be a slower project. I was really putting myself to the pins to get it in the water for the spring fishing. I painted it today and did a bunch more rigging. I will post pics tomorrow. Strick to answer the other part of the question every saltwater washdown pump I have had in the bilge has turned to rust on me. so I decided to mount it in a dry place. I will see how it works in about 4 days!

Tashmoo
I wear a full face mask with top end filters on it. My friend Mark was wearing just a mask. Awlgrip is bad stuff, But as long as you are not working with it day in and day out. A GOOD FACE mask is all you need, We had the ventilation going the whole time with some cheap air filters over it to keep the air clean and keep the BUGS out. You would not believe how much the bugs like wet awlgrip. I will post some more pics tomorrow.

basspond that was definately my seacraft you saw running under the sea bright bridge. I am planning on some kind of aluminum bench seat or small leaning post. I will have to have something built because everything I look at it either to tall or too wide for my liking.

I got the motor on and bunch more rigging done. I will post tomorrow

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSCN1435.jpg

This is where I mounted the washdown spicket, I know it looks a little strange but it is centrally located so I only need half the lenght of the boat for hose and between the console and the livewell is a perfect storage spot for the hose.

Guys sorry for the late response, I really apprecaite all the nice comments about the boat. I will add some pics of it in the water in a couple of days. I have put 40 hours on the boat already and it runs great, I know a couple of people were wondering about the scuppers I put in. The work awsome, I have got very little water in the boat and when I wash the deck off it goes right out the back. Boat wakes at the transom and the scuppers keep it all out. I put a new leaning post on the boat that was smaller and fits perfectly.

Re: some more work, Non skid , console modification

I am starting work on my '78 20' MA console now and like what Billy did reversing the flange. My console has the cooler/seat in front of the console so reversing the flange would make it impossible to get screws in. Anyone addressed this problem or have an approach for securing the front portion of the console? I could not find any strings addressing it.

I thought if I screwed the back portion down under the console and bedded the front cooler in 5200 with the cooler full of water to keep it bedded until the 5200 set I would probably be OK.

Thoughts? THX!

BigLew 07-25-2008 05:37 PM

Re: some more work, Non skid , console modification

A quick idea. (I don't like 5200. In my opinion, it is used much too often and ends up costing more time and aggravation than it's worth. But I do admit it has its place.)

Consider this. Make a base that is screwed down/permanently attached to the deck where you are going to 5200 the cooler into place. On top of that you can devise a mount or tray for the cooler. Then, the cooler can come on and off as needed or is convenient. You can design it in such a way that it will overlap the flange of the console and not limit you in pulling ot moving the console if you need to.

If you decide to change your mind/configuration later, it is only a matter of removing that base (probably a few bolts through the deck.) Just my 2¢.
