My cousin and I yesterday blocked up the trailer and
removed the 4 tires. Was not as bad as expected. Had generator and portable compressor with air impact wrench, lugs came right out. Has drum brakes on all four that were not seized but dragging. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...aster27005.jpg Compost pile on the two 6 cyclinders.  http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...aster27008.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...aster27010.jpg See ya, Ken |

Re: 27 project
Just FYI, I have the exact same plate on the back of my 69, mine was serial #221 and Model 27 .. I am curious if they counted the 27's in sequence, or was it just 6 boats of any style after yours? I think Carla may know the answer. I read somewhere they only specified the year when it was actually registered, and not when it was built. I still have the exact same anchor locker door somewhere, now I know that was factory. Good luck with the project!

NB,
Since you have the digital camera out, are quite proficient with it, and in close proximity, could I trouble you for a couple of photos of "Red" and perhaps some details on the boat? I would love to move to a 23 Sceptre from the 20 Seafari I currently have. It would fit my usage profile perfectly. Thank you in advance for any information you can provide. JC |
Re: 27 project
Ken,
Glad you found the ID plate!! I'm sure it was one "unusual site" going down the road... and now it feels good to finally have her home. The VDH carved in the anchor locker doors are original for the 60's. From my small log on boat numbers, appears the: 21-footers have numbers from 50's thru 100's. 19-foot bowriders in 1965 numbered 300's, 1966 numbered 400's, 1967 numbered 500's, 1968-69 numbered 600's. 27-footers numbered 200's, built in 1967-1968, maybe in 69. There are variations on this depending on when the boat first took title ... that became the "year of the boat". Ken, I showed CM the photos of your boat. At first he was excited you found one, then cringed when seeing her condition. He remembers a lot about her construction and very willing to help you in any way. I also learned on many boats in the 60's, he wrote with an indulible pen, the ID number, on starboard side, on the transom, just below the gunwale. This was a secret place in case the boat was stolen and ID plate removed. Looking forward to seeing progress pictures and her transformation. |

This is without a doubt the "Flagship of the Fleet".
I agree with Sandy on one thing here. When you get ready to do something that will be labor intensive and where many hands will make light the work, let's plan a SeaCraft gathering at area 442. We'll all gather at the SeaCraft. I'm sure we can make it a BYOB&B picnic. (Bring Your Own Beverage & Beef) |

OK, I'm whipped today.
My brother in-law and I today started the cleaning and gutting process. Used chlorine in a pump sprayer and pressure cleaner for 5 hours, just on the outside. The bilge in the engine compartment was 8 inches deep in mud, leaves, etc. Found the drain in between the 2 engines. It has not drained any water in quiet some time. Shucked all cushions and drop down table. Termites destroyed all the wood. Rats ate the foam in the cushions and life jackets that were stowed. You can see where they tried to eat the teak, but gave up. Found two things today that surprised me. In the engine compartment are 2 saddle tanks and one main tank. Port side of the main tank forward of the engines is a stainless steel water tank, looks to be 40-50 gallons. In the cabin right under the fly bridge was a control that says Marineair, The rascal has an A/C unit under the helm on the bridge, which looks to be in good shape. The return and supply is mid ship in the ceiling. All in all this will be a total gut. The bridge, cap and deck all need to be re-cored. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...ster215027.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...ster215034.jpg The engine box was gone and will need to build one, Unless someone knows where there is one laying around. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...ster215038.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...ster215039.jpg There were things growing on this boat that scientist have not yet named.. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...ster215037.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...ster215028.jpg See ya, Ken PS: Thanks to all for the encouragement. |

Re: 27 project
Poly-glow would make that bad boy shine like a new penny. Are those engines the 250 cid? The 250's were bullet proof engines and I wouldn't be surprised if they could be rebuilt. GM also made a 292 cid straight 6 that came in big trucks and was known to have a lot of torque.

Re: 27 project
The 150, 160 and 165 hp Mercruiser inline 6 motors from 1967 through 1973 were all 250 cid.
In 1969 Mercruiser made what was called the "250/250". It was the 250 cid inline 6 made to produce 250 hp. It had a marinized version of the Carter Thermoquad carburetor on an intake manifold made by Offenhauser, and through-hull exhaust. Thunderbird made several 23' Formula hulls equipped with twin 250/250 motors for the offshore racing market, and I had one of these in Waterway Marina in Palm Beach Gardens in '83. Anacapri also had the twin 250/250 setup listed as an option on their 24' hull in 1969. I don't know if they ever actually made one. I know AMF/Slickcraft produced at least 5 of their 1969 23' hulls with this power setup. My Dad owned one of them, and his was the 5th hull made with that power setup. When I was 10 years old, I thought it was the fastest family boat on the water 'cuz it would run about 50-55 mph. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/f...ckcraft235.jpg According to the records I can find, Mercruiser only sold the 292 cid inline 6 motors from 1969 to 1973, and they were rated at either 200 hp or 215 hp. |

Man, the 1st part of the job is already done! I 2nd the Poly Glow comment!! It would shine her right up! That boat is sweet. Great shots, especially the highway leaf shot. |
Re: 27 project
I also use the Hwy Leaf trick quite a bit, works pretty dam good too. It actually determines where I launch sometimes.
Ken it sure looks better just being washed and cleaned a bit |

Re: 27 project
Ken are you sure you cant refurbish those engines ? :D
Gotta love the Harbor Freight Gantry Crane. Sure comes in handy. I widened mine a little as there is room to move the two vertical legs out a couple inches on either side. I have 98.5 inches between the verticals now and I think I can go wider still. You will have to drill some new holes...take a look and you will know what I'm talking about. strick |
Re: 27 project

Been there done that. First thing I did when it came home was re-drill the 1/2 inch holes on the plate. The beam is 9.8 on this tank! Believe me those engines are beyond gone. When we wrapped the chain and it hit the oil pan they busted open and water poured out. Ken |

Ken,
What are your thoughts for power? Looks like the 6`s had good room around them. Lots of old 6bta`s out there for short money. Sleeves and slugs and you would have 20 years worth of power. The extra weight might help too. I know you`re aware of CG issues. Cheers, GFS Cheers, GFS |
Re: 27 project
Hi NoBones
The way I remember it there is four distinct parts or rebuilding a boat. There is “the fun part” pulling things our, planning in you mind what KenDo will look like, thinking of all the stuff in the re build project you are going to do. Then comes the “money part” that’s the part you definitely want some fuzzy details on accounting, or really, really good reasons trying to explain how much money and for WHAT to your wife about that *** boat. Then comes the “hard work part” that’s the part of after you bought all that expensive stuff making it work right, AND making it look as good as a brand new boat only cooler. And finally the “pleasure using part” that’s the part you Forget all the hard work part, plus Forget all the money spent part, and Remember all the complements you got from your admirers, and how good it feels to be using her the way she was intended. Now if only the fish were biting. FellowShip …………………………. Just for the Grins :D :D :D Official Antique Classic SeaCraft Owner |
Re: 27 project
I'm in the money part right now and with the real estate market in slow motion and the $$ and the work put into getting the pipeline (means $$) of the new company in place I have a hard time justifing even to myself any thing that I could buy to get the project done.
I have had to pass up great deals on trailers, electronics, engines and a million other things needed. So I am left with going out and sanding which is a pain but it is cheap. So any local contributions of primer, paints and such are needed and appreciated. Boy do I want to get to the pleasure using part |

Re: 27 project
Those 4LH series diesels were by some accounts the best small mechanical diesels ever made. Sadly, Yanmar no longer produces them due to emissions restrictions. I had a single 4LH-STE in my Fortier 26 and it was an outstanding engine. In my new Fortier 26 I have a 6LP-DTE, which is rated for 250hp and has 6 as opposed to the 4LH's 4 cylinders yet the 4LH pushed an identical boat about 2 knots faster at wide open. Yanmar does however make a series of smaller, lighter and probably better performing diesels now that would be far better in your proposed I/O setup then the 4LH's would have been. The 4BY and 6BY engines are both pretty impressive packages. I also woulden't discount the Volvo D-3 series as they too are lightweight high performance diesels. They are all great, except for the price tags that go with them ! For that reason, maybe look into repowering with a single, yet more powerful engine. Awesome project you are undertaking. I can't wait for when you start grinding and glassing part ! |
******** eXtreme Makeover---- 27' Edition*******
This weekend little was done other then still
shoveling mulch and cutting and shucking everything. Both I/O's are out now as well as both fuel tanks. Another interesting thing was the trim tabs.
