Glad to see your back at it. I would have bought the boat if I lived anywhere near you. A lot cheaper then a 21 egret which is what I have been lusting for. Nice work as usual. All that foam is not cheap. I just spent $480 on a 1'' 4x8 sheet of corecell ouch!

strick thank you, I the itch again when my wife asked me when I was gonna finish it.....

I got the outside band fiberglassed with some 1708 along with the the second side of the stringers. getting some warm weather tomorrow and should be able to make some progress in the afternoon

That is going to be one very strong boat.

gofastsandman 04-07-2014 10:01 PM

He does sweet work.

strick 04-08-2014 12:48 AM

You cant buy one the way you are building it. The 20sf is sure a fun boat to drive. Lots of looks and compliments at the ramp too boot.

RUSTYNTABATHA 04-08-2014 01:47 AM

I can pull up in my beat up 20 MA and get more attention then a brand new "xyzqrt brand " everytime.... my wife accused me of buying my boat for attention ... lol

flyingfrizzle 04-08-2014 07:32 AM

Im glad you are back on it instead of selling it...

When I do my 71 sf this is how I would like to go about redoing it. This will give me a good map to go by. Also love how you do your decks on a molding table, so much less fairing and gives you a true flat surface on your deck and the core is sealed better when done this way too. I look forward to watching this one unfold.

billythekid 04-08-2014 09:29 PM

alright had some nice weather and got done with work early and got some work done.

I ground down the boogers off the bulkheads and fitted them into place. I decided I wanted to bed them against the stringers with dynaglass. I got the mat and the 1708 cut and fitted. then I mixed up a gallon of resin and a slow roast and mixed up a bunch of dynaglass and mushed it into emty caulk tubes.

I squirted dynaglass into the cracks and let it squirt out to give me something to radius against.
you can see the green dynaglass in the corners.

I layed up a bunch of layers of glass for the gas tank bed. While that was curing I decided it was time to remember why I am doing this and to give me some more incentive to finsh.

also had to make sure it still fit....

and it still fits.

alright moving right along , got the supports stuck in for the gas tank, need to slap some glass on them. I got all 8 holes drilled for the drains and got pvc mounted in them and grounded the ones smooth in the bilge to keep it clean looking. I cleaned up the shop so I thought I could put the boat next to laminating table but there is just not enough room. to work side by side.

got the stringers for laminating table, I am using 16ft timberstrands, they are engineered lumber that is straight as an arrow.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/007-4.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/010-4.jpg

I cut the legs for the outer joist 1/4" longer so the center will be 1/4" lower. so this means after I lay it up and flip it over it will have a 1/4" crown in the center for drainage.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/012-5.jpg

shop all cleaned up, once I get the drain plug drilled out in the transom the boat will spend some time outside.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/011-5.jpg

man If I had a week straight to work on it I could really do some damage....

billythekid 04-11-2014 11:24 PM

had sometime tonight to mess around with some stuff. I got the garboard drain drilled and got an layer of mat inside it to seal it up. I decided I wanted the gunnels wider in the rear so I scribed a line an made a cut. I made it 1.5" wider in the rear. I got it all fastened back together and ready for the flip.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/007-5.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/006-5.jpg

alright I got back to the laminating table. I got the stringers all squared up and put the melamine down on it. either I am getting weaker or the melamine is getting heavier. Its got to be 90lbs a sheet with razor sharp edges!! The table is big. hard to tell in the photos, table is 8'x 18' edges all lined up and still have the 1/4" depression which in return will be a 1/4" crown for drainage.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/004-6.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/003-4.jpg

pulled a string down the center and shot some finishing nails to secure everything.

Blue_Heron 04-12-2014 08:30 AM

I'm glad you decided to finish it. There are lot of rebuilds going on, but only a few with this level of quality. I'll be watching to see what you core the deck with.
Dave

billythekid 04-12-2014 10:15 PM

I got sometime this afternoon to work on the boat and got some work done. I flipped the cap back off and and glassed in the gunnel, where it was cut.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/011-6.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/014-7.jpg

I got the cap cored and ready for glass, I used dyvinacell, corecell and aircell I think was the name of it? anyways, I show a series of pics on how I dry fit the coring material.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/002-3.jpg

I guessed and figured there was 2"-3" of curve so I oversized the with by three inches to get the curvature in the coring

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/001-1.jpg

I cut the scribed curve, then fit it back and cut the squares out to make it fit.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/003-5.jpg

I then take a tape measure and and a marker and hold it at 2.5" against the outside and and scribed the coring with my marker. then cut it and fit.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/004-7.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/005-6.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/006-6.jpg

well after I got done I mixed up about 2 qts of divilette putty and trawled it in with a 1/4"x 1/4" tile trowl.

you can see the corecell in the center bow, this is where the bow cleat goes.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/007-6.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/009-4.jpg

I let it kick for about 2 hours and went back with the multimaster and put a 45 degree bevel on the coring so the glass will flow smoothly off it.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/013-4.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/012-6.jpg

billythekid 04-13-2014 09:54 PM

I glassed the coring today, it takes longer to dry fit the glass then it does to lay it! I put a layer of mat and a layer of 1708 over it. In some spots where the rivet holes were reallymessed up I left the glass long and rolled it up the inner edge to beef it up.

I cant believe how strong the cap is now.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/003-6.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/002-4.jpg

I also layed two more layer of glass over where I split the gunnel.

gonna try to get the template done for the floor tomorrow afternoon.

also someone asked me how I got the dynaglass in between the bulkheads and the stringers, I packed an empty caulk tube full of material and made it really easy to squirt into the joint. I got the empty tubes from aim tubes from sj discounts

I'm glad you took my advise and got back at it : your kids are not too "Young" to watch and pass a wrench....enjoy brother :p

BTW: Get out of that NJ weather & come on down to Fla and take care of some deck issues I have....I love your work

billythekid 04-14-2014 08:59 PM

I had an hour of sunlight left when I got home and went to work. I was determined to finish the floor template. I got 90% done when I was called in for dinner. tomorrow I will finish up where the bilge hatch is going and the fuel sending unit, pick up tube pie plate will go. trying to start laminating this weekend.

Thanks for the help along the way.

billythekid 04-16-2014 07:17 PM

alright I decided to re use the large front hatch and the bow hatch as my bilge hatch. They were close to size I wanted and they are already built. I know I will have to recore them but the hard work is done. So for my mold table I got some 3/4" MDF for the plugs. I added a 1/8" al the way around with a piece of luan. I then gave the radius of the corners with a steady hand and a pencil....

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/002-7.jpg

here I have the luan pushed up against the hatch to give myself 1/8"

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/003-8.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/006-7.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/007-7.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/008-5.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/009-5.jpg

After I cut everything to the size I needed I put a small radius around the top of it and fit them into place. Next came the radius wax that I got from Joe Merton (merton fiberglass). Basically I put it down in place and use a socket on an extenstion to radius around the plugs. I use a little heat to melt it into place.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/014-8.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/012-7.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/010-5.jpg

I have the three plugs in place and waxed up. I have the layout of the stringers and the fuel fill also the rigging tubes. I am not gonna core a certain area under the console so I can make some cuts later and don't have to be so exact. the plugs you see are the bilge hatch, fuel sending unit/pick up and the front hatch

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/016-6.jpg

billythekid 04-20-2014 10:23 PM

well I got a good start on the deck this weekend I got the duratec sprayed, 2 layers of mat down, and then the 3rd layer of mat and 1708 down. I needed help for the durtec and skin coat. So my my friend Mark came by and we kicked its ass. We sprayed the duratec and put the skin coat down in 2 hours. With 40 minutes of primer kicking off.

I cut all the glass the day before and had it rolled up and marked for laminating

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/018-4.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/019-5.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/006-8.jpg

Mark is the man with the cup gun. He has been doing this a long time, there was no sense in me getting in his way. I mixed and kept the cup gun fed. We used 1.5 gallons of duratec for the deck build

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/010-6.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/011-8.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/012-8.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/013-5.jpg

here is how we set the mat to laminate, when the flop over they are over lapping by about an 1"

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/017-4.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/014-9.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/015-6.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/016-7.jpg

billythekid 04-20-2014 10:43 PM

Mark had to go after the first coat was down so I figured I could get the second coat down myself. I got it done but don't think I would attempt it again. It was too much rolling, mixing and laminating for one person.... I used deck putty from Joe mertons to fill the radius of the hatches to give the 1708 an easier flow over them.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/020-3.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...ky0707/021.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...ky0707/024.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...ky0707/025.jpg

With the second coat applied and some time to kill I decided to blend the old engine box and console together. I first cut 3" off the console with the air trimmer, Which I still think is one of the best ways to cut fiberglass anyway. That newer console I cut had to be one of the thickest consoles ever made. It was 1/2" thick in the corners. It took about 3 hours and a lot of head scratching along with cutting/ fitting, cutting/fitting and it finally came together. I am gonna build a livewell into it and glass it into one.

I like the idea with the console and using the engine hatch!

billythekid 04-21-2014 09:43 PM

got the coring all dry fitted , it took 7 4'x4' sheets to cut and fit everything with enough left over to do the hatches. I put corelite down where the console and leaning post will be mounted.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...707/004-11.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/006-9.jpg

after everything is dry fitted, I mark everything to make it easy to reinstall after the I apply the divelette putty.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/007-9.jpg

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/008-7.jpg

I ran out of putty and have to get more tomorrow. I got the back half of the boat all puttied into place.

FLexpat 04-21-2014 10:35 PM

I am REALLY glad you decided to finish this and not sell it. Seeing the craftsmanship of your work is awesome - please keep up the documentation - I have a lot to learn.

billythekid 04-23-2014 09:33 PM

guys thank you for the motivation.

lord that console is bad ass, I hope mine can look that good when its finished. does the livewell pressurized?

got all the coring done and back filled around the hatches with deck putty and layed th final layer of mat, roving

here you can see the trawl lines for the devilette putty this is how to bed the coring.

well today was the day. got home early and decided to pop it. It was a little husky and sharp getting it up. I called in some friends that were local to help me flip it . once I got it flipped, I cut all the trimmings off with the diamond trimmer and gut the rest of the depth with the jig saw.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/003-9.jpg

hatches fit really nice

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707/002-8.jpg

here is how I got the plugs out of the hatch openings, I cut the middle out and pryed and wedged it from there. never pry on the edge as you can do damage.

Takeapartable as well. Not kind, but doable.

How would you get your old fuel fill hose out if you were in my shoes?
In foam. Deck down.
Nice work.

flyingfrizzle 04-25-2014 07:45 AM

What happened to the duratec primer that you placed down first on the lay up table??? I was expecting the top of the deck surface to be primed gray once you flipped it over. I see some of it but not much. Did it stick to the table and not stay on the resin or am I missing something???

Looks real nice btw.

billythekid 04-25-2014 08:04 AM

No it's there. I didn't clean the partial film off yet

DonV 04-25-2014 09:53 AM

I used the Arjay product to do my transom, if the bedding compound is as good, then it's some bad azz stuff. I'm thinking he better get it right the first time!!! There is no going back. :)

flyingfrizzle 04-25-2014 09:54 AM

oh, makes sense.

Do you think the film material is necessary or do you use it just for insurance? I have just relied on 5-6 coats of mold release wax and I have had good luck with just that so far. I would like to try PVA and see if it helps the release on more complex parts but didn't think I would be necessary on a flat part like the deck.

GFS,
I'll share a passing thought. Going with a brute force method, what about inserting a round wood plug into the hose as close as possible to where it begins to be imbedded in the foam; then use a long pipe wrench clamped down on the hose over the block to twist, hoping the torque/twisting would break the bond between the hose and foam?

Good luck

I am not gonna lie. There are gonna be 3 or 4 recruits to bed the deck as the working time is short and there is only one shot.

I won't lay a mold up with out it, there is nothing worse than the fiberglass bonding to your mold. PVA is an awesome product that insures it will pop off most of the time..... The problem with the wax is it absorbs into different material like that mdf. I still do two coats of wax than spray the PVA .

Plus it's easy to spray through an hvlp gun

billythekid 05-17-2014 10:38 PM

well the boat progressed slowed to a crawl with the fishing season in wide open bite going on and work been busy.

I have been chipping away at stuff and getting parts ordered that I needed.

here are some pics of a trip we did with a bunch of shimano reel engineers and reps. a friend who is sponsored boat was not ready yet with a new electronics package so I took them with him. Basspond snap some shots and sent them to me.

alright back to some work .

I laminated the coring for the bulkhead and stern boxes. one side has a layer of mat and a layer of 1708 the other side has 2 layers of mat. its amazing how stiff they are once you laminate both sides, I was concearned that they were going to be that strong. I was wrong.
