Mock up and layout of console
laying out console with mdf melamine
3 Attachment(s)
Built a mock up with cardboard and now it is time to build console.
I will fillet the corners , wax and PVA the mold... there is a 3" toe kick all the way around.. which will be built after the console layed up
Not much going on started to demo the front fish box and infloor live well rain cam so had to stop..
Where did you get the wood for the mold? I know it MDF but its coated on one side. It looks like melamine. The only melamine I can find around here is made with cheap particle board.

layed up console with glass
5 Attachment(s)
Started out with some clay for radius corners. then waxed it and sprayed some pva type water base film on it. Looks like Part All Release film.. I bought this stuff years ago so not sure if it will work well. But regardless the mold is waxed and it has melamine So it should come apart...Any who Once the film dryed, I rolled out white gel coat.NO wax let it tack off and then started to lay 1.5 oz mat. overlapping corners. and then two layers of 1808 0/90.. I found this stuff wets out a lot easier.. I used about 3 gallons of resin. the cornes and radius. has additional glass or tabbing.. I used a lot of scrap pieces from my transom build.
I will be putting a 3/4 in foam core that has resin channels cut into the foam and 1" o.c. perferatioins already. I would like to bag it but I decided to just lay a section down and glass over it. then fit another piece and glass over it. That way I think would be a lot stronger verses. putting all the foam in at once and glassing the entire core at one time |
going to bed foam in the morning
This is a very simple design on a console. Nothing fancy.. just a lot of work. either way
Martin thanks for the pictures. Looking good so far.:D
added foam to top of console
Hoping to finish this week
Looks great can't wait to see it when u pop it
Some More Pictures. I added the foam and glassed with 1 layer of 1.5 oz csm for adhesion to foam. may be over kill but I never had problems with delam. added foam with some cabosil mixed with resin. then weighted down with buckets of water .let set- up ..Then one layer of 1808 0-90 and then another layer of drop scrap 1808 0-45 and 1708 0-45 .. abit frankinstien-ish as far as the glass goes. but I just have so much drop that it is getting in the way.

first 5 pics are the back of console.
the last four are the top of console |
I know I did not show the steps or process very well. but As I said before. I always sandwich the foam in csm when installing. So that I have a good bond to the foam.. It also help that the foam has resin channels cut into it as well as weep holes drilled every 1 " square
Hopefully do a side tonight then the other one in the morning. and the seat and front sat night .. and pull out sun afternoon
Looking good. I try to use up as much scrap/drops as I can too, so I'm with u there. Can't wait to see it poped out and to hear how easily it came out the mold (I hope). Been doing a final 320 grit sand on the leaning post bait well this morning. Hope to wax tonight and maybe start glassing.
