I like it! I've been checking out Maverick Master anglers lately..... keep them coming...
strick |
The Maverick is a really nice looking boat.
My neighbor just bought a 21 Egret. $$$$$$$ |
Here ya go Strick.
http://www.mbcforum.com/showtopic.ph...last/m/1/#LAST They pop up on here all the time!! Not too sure about him comparing the MA to the 23' SeaCraft....but he might be right! |
Thanks Don! Cant beat the suzuki. I've been thinking about the 21 a lot but that boat sure is tempting. Still thinking it out as Im not in any rush. There are some very shallow areas that I have not been able to get into with my 20....flooded islands etc. Trying to pacify my new hobby...fly fishing for striped bass...I'm totally hooked!

Hey strick, what weight rod/line do you use for that. Are Delta stripers the size of Bigshrimpins quarry back east? Sounds like a blast...
|
Strick u thinkn of a newer 21'??

Front and back bulkheads glassed and floor.

PM's sent. I cant wait to see how this one turns out. I like the lay out. Do you remember the thred of the one that a fella posted a while ago. He converted a 20sf into a flats style lay out? I cant find the darn thing. It turned out real nice.

I would rather not see it.......to me he did a one up on the "bay boat" craze!!! I have been thinking about selling my 16' Bonefisher and moving to a bay boat. That 20' rebuild was exactly what I would like to do with a SeaCraft to scratch that itch!!.
|
Cant remember that one right off hand
|
Here is is. Very similar to what you guys are doing.

Some more progress. Foam is glued in. Also cut some foam for under the deck. Gonna use a kodiak baitwell mounted on a stand. Seems it will make things alot easier and you want have to worry about water splashing on your back. Cut some pieces for supports under the gunnels and some rod holders. Pulled some 202 over the glass to give me something to sand so I can make the box somewhat smooth. Think I may cut a hatch in the back bulkhead so I can access the other side of the baitwell and also put a high speed pickup and seacock valve. Thinking the further up from the motor the less disturbance it will cause.

Gunnels are done, routed and all. Just disassemble, and glue back together and glass. Stand for baitwell glued and glassed in. Went ahead a put a layer of glass on both side walls in bilge area and one on the starboard box inner wall. Next filet some corners in the foam box and a layer of 1708 in there. Get the gunnels glassed and back deck glued and glassed, then there will be hourssssss of sanding.
Note to self....never paint bilge until final decision making is done.... |
Man, you are making me feel lazy. You have made more progress in the past two weeks than I have on my boat in the past two months. Tell your buddy to stop taking in piss in the garage though, that can't be sanitary.
|
Lol. Busted. Yeah thats right where I stand too.
Girlfriend is visiting family so will prolly get to work all weekend on it. Hopefully get the gunnels glassed and back deck on. |

Sanded some on the 202 where the baitwell is with some 80g on the 8". Made quick work of it. Spread some on the fishbox and these boxes and bilge should turn out fairly smooth. Put in some drains for the boxes. May put some kinda of screen inside the drains on the boxes to catch guts and trash. It could be almost 7" deep. Pull out the screen and dump trash out instead of it going n the bilge. Did manage to use one big piece of glass for the fishbox plus one small square on the end. She is sealed up tight. Baitwell lid is alittle off. Last minute desicion to put the kodiak in. Was just gonna mold one up and glass to bottom but these kodiaks hold bait so good tho.

The scuppers turned out better than I thought. Cabosiled and glassed right over them and grinded out later. They are under the floor just enough to keep water from standing in the rear. Not sure why others dont do that. They go straight off the floor and then sometimes put flared brass or thruhulls in which extend above the floor an 1/8"-1/2". Who wants water standing in a gully or floor.

Cool, did you use a die grinder? Are you using poly or epoxy for this build?

I use the dewalt variable speed. U can see it on the floor in one of the pics above. Has an 8" pad on it now. I use 80g and 50g for alot of sanding w it. Takes some getting use to. It will take everything off before u can let go of trigger. It will also snap back and bite u too when the trigger is locked on. Pic below is 80g. Was sanding floor on my MA, sander caught an edge and was coming straight for the "jewels". Course I was on my knees, so instinct, I shut my legs together and caught sander between knees....close call for sure. Pic is a couple days afterwards. Mainly just melted all my skin w paint and all mixed n. Doc had to numb it up good to clean it out.
Epoxy products were used all on the bottom and hull outside. Transom and under back deck is all epoxy and all top sides and floor and gunnels are vinyl. |
That is some pretty accurate sanding with a full size grinder on those scupper drains. I have always used a flap wheel on the grinder and sanded with the DA. I may have to try a sanding pad on the grinder.
Every time I have used poly or vinyl on large wet outs I have trouble with my working times and pot life so I have been sticking with epoxy on everything. I love epoxy but man does it get expensive. How do you approach large wet outs? Are you using waxed or un-waxed vinyl? |
Oh no scuppers were cut out w drill attachment. Like a boring type bit thats rounded on the end. Big grinder for big area....DA for final sand and corners and fine tuning.
Its chilly here n NC so mixing the resin even on a hotter side of catalyst it still has a good working time. Now the floor was kicking off as i was using the roller getting last minute air bubbles out. I guess the thing is to have all prepping done and get the resin out the bucket and spread quickly. Trust me my first 23' I wasted alot of resin and cabosil. Not perfect now but have only seem to waste about 48oz of vinyl resin on this so far and that was because I kicked it over... |
And the corners around the scuppers and around the whole floor were formed w cabosil then glassed right over while cabosil was still wet. Just alittle sanding, some glazing putty here and there and the corners will be a nice transition from the floor to the side
|
Ah, that makes sense about the scupper holes. I was wondering how in the world you did that with a full size grinder, I was thinking a die grinder would work way better.:D

This thing right here.... multi purpose tool
|
I like the scupper layout but I had problems with mine done the exact same way. I have issues with the different layers delaminating/cracking where the grinding was done to form a smooth flow. It looked fantastic after applying the gelcoat but not for very long. I have found that pvc pipe works great for glassing to but ends need to be wrapped all the way to the inside with glass for it to not crack or seperate. Maybe temperature has something to do with it or the poly I used just didn't bond very well.
|
I know what u mean. Hoping that glassing over the ends of the pipe will help. Worst case is if it starts to then grind alittle out and fill w epoxy. I may even paint a coat of epoxy around the opening before I paint. Hopefully I wont see any problems. Course the boat is gonna settle some after it is rode some so im sure there will be a spider crack or two somewhere. Shoot I havent seen a boat that dosent have spider cracks.

I used 1" ID (1.25"OD) pre-fab fiberglass tubing from mcmaster-carr for the scuppers on my 18SF. Cut chunks to size and then glassed them right in, also did the fish box drain. Makes the job real easy and then you don't ever have to think about them again. Ever. Not a big fan of the traditional brass tubes or glassing in PVC pipe for all the reasons already mentioned (cracking etc). A 5ft stick is only $18. http://www.mcmaster.com/#8535k26 |
Dang thats cheap. May check into that in the future

Will also be closing in the rest of the back. |

Ended up rounding off the bottom of the front rod holder. The rods fit nicely w/o being on top on one another. Had to drill out front gunnel support for longer rods. Glassed the underside of the gunnel to the boat.
