Longing for Long Point

Here I am now in this 4th. day of winter and I'm pretty sure I have cabin fever. Once again the temperature is expected to drop way down over this long winter night. The only fishing I can look forward to is through a 6" diameter hole drilled through the ice after we drag a small shed out on the lake to hold the heat in from a small kerosene heater. I heard the fish they throw back in Sebastian where Long Point is, wouldn't even fit through a 6" hole.....! I looked at the weather channel at noon and they said it was 72 degrees at Long Point and had shot of a young lady in one of them two piece bathing suits. Here I am dressed in long underwear, a flannel shirt, coveralls, a fleece jacket and gloves, huddled next to the fireplace, inside my house, freezin' and they show me this on TV. I come real close the git'in the model 12 out and git'in even with that TV. May can't get here soon enough to suit me!
I hope GFS or Commander Pooh Bah don't issue any confirming weather reports.

Yes, it helps.

When ice fishing in Vt, Ziggy uses a little red wagon with a fishfinder and battery. He walks around until he marks fish, and then he starts the auger.

BH, very close on the translation there.

Pooh Bah, not so much...

Now those Vermont-ers are always on the cutt'in edge of technology! Here in NH we just git Bert Swenson to walk around with his divin'in rods 'till he gets a "sensation". Then we hitch Olie Gustafson's 6 oxen to the Red Berncroft's Cincinnati steam drill, stoke up the fire box and start drillin'. Usually we hit the water in only four or five feet, now that this Global Warming has set in.

Well Terry, looks like the weather is going to break long enough to get out and shoot red grouper and mangos before the water gets below 70. Here is the forecast for Saturday off Cedar Key:

Saturday: Northeast winds 10 to 15 knots diminishing to 5 to 10 knots in the afternoon. Seas 2 feet. Bay and inland waters a moderate chop.

Good luck with that ice fishing.... :D

DonV 12-27-2013 05:30 PM

Dang Ken....that's kinda rough on him!! But I liked it!! :) This 75 degree weather is really tough.

No kidding. I was at the Eagles/Detroit Game in Philly a few weeks ago when it snowed 9 inches in 3 hours. How do people even consider living where you have to hide indoors and put your boat away for 5 months out of the year?

I thought Bert was from Maine??? 8 below in Caribou now. 80 here today. Fishing tomorrow.

I see genetic engineering is making progress as the Vt. state flower is much smaller now.

I remember tv dishes the size of a Winnebago on every lawn.

Kmoose : Cedar Key - If I remember right, those Rebs cut off our pencil shipments in '63 (1863)....! We had to write with charcoal up here. Used a lot of paper and they had all the pulpwood too.....! Our darn water here hasn't ever been 70 degrees. In the dog days of summer the best we can hope for up here is 50 degrees. Somebody told me those Crackers eat the tops out of the palm trees there in Cedar Key - very strange.

Don V : You are painfully correct, Froom what I can see, I don't think Florida is even a Southern State - it's a dang Caribbean State. I'm hooking the Hudson up to the 21' Moesly and heading south in May. Bert said "Not only do the gals not wear flannel bathing suits but in South Florida sometimes the forget half of 'em....!"

GFS : Was the Wayco Crimas Puerco de Jour Ok or did you have to turn to a Spiral Cut Publix???? Standing by.

And all this time I thought FL was a Yankee state, what wit all the bleu hairs at the Fontainebleau and all... and all the NY and NJ plates...

And again my delusion of being hip, and draggin' my Moesly 21 to Mag Bay with a '68 Jeep M715 has been topped by some fan of pommie cloth with a south bound Hudson... weak, shallow thoughts have I:o

Sandy, I have no idea what my name was. Iasked around about 7 years ago regarding best riding 20-23s and got directed here. Found what
i wanted to know and called it good. I just tried to sign on and got nowhere.

Somebody is shortening a SC 23 and adding a bracket:eek:... Can't exceed 26' in slip or something.

Haven't seen that thread here. Hope it works out for him I guess:confused:

Staying "ON TOPIC" (remember, I'm required to be watched by Snookerd due to my diminished capacity from all the cheap branded boats that caused minor cranial trama due to all the pounding before I owned my SeaCraft)
These are the kinds drastic measures one must take if they have not reserved a site at Long Point - cutting your boat down to fit....!

There are very few slips left at the Port Carla Marina (77) unless you want to stumble all the way from the Tiki Bar to the Tee Dock after a swig of Don V's elixir potion - "kissing everything in sight" and returning stuff you never even stole in the first place.

Terry- quit being so hard on yourself.....there are plenty of others that have had a few hits to the head.....keep your chin up buddy!

Terry England 12-29-2013 08:28 PM

WH-A-A-A-T? Did Conner tell you about that 17' Wellcrack. He swore in blood he would never say a word.
Honest, it was one of those C. Raymond Hunt, Alem designs and It was Preetty...!
How was I to know the stringers had the same structural integrity as a Twix! (1" X 12" white pine glassed half way up!) It had a 3/4" plywood floor so it felt SOLID. Self bailing too. EXCEPT I couldn't figure out why it was so sluggish one afternoon, so I opened the bilge inspection port and the water was just below the deck. Jumped in the water with a tank on to see what was going on and there was a 2' long crack running lenghtwise down the hull mid-way between the keel and the chine. I about swallowed my regulator. Decide to "go for broke" and pulled the drain plug, climbed in and bent the throttles till they hit fiberglass and "9 holed it" for the beach, which wouldn't have been too bad except where we were we couldn't see land. Everybody climbed in the front and I spooled the twin Evinrude 50's up and we barely planed off. The water was going out the drain only slightly faster than it was coming in the crack. Finally we saw the Don Cesar, rolled through Pass-a grille "yodling"
and slid it up on the ramp at Gulfport. I had to change bathing suits on that one...!
All my smart St. Pete Underwater Club Brothers were running Sea Crafts, so I fixed the WellCrack, sold it and bought the Safari Conner and I dove out of in the 70's. So that's why I am the way I am.
Only thing scarier was that hammerhead that was the same lenght as a phosphate train on Riley's Hump, south of Fort Jefferson or the Cuban gunboats at the Pickle Banks north of Cayman Brac. Don't let Conner tell you otherwise, Scouts honor!

Snookerd 12-29-2013 08:50 PM

It was clear that CSC Gatherings 3.0 was fully rooted and 25 Seafaris and a 21 were leading the way. Maybe snookerd, nobones, capt chuck, 65bowrider and company can actually represent once again at the same time.

Now that you mention it...the fall gathering was dominated by the big "Seacrafts"

I think Dog and Denny were the only "small" boats at the gathering. Now if only some one would bring a "27" we could have the full Monty

Spill the beans.....!
That dang Snookerd pumped my stomach. Unreasonable search and seizure. First he "de-rails" my Train of Thought by talking about me hitting my head on the windshield of a Bayliner, then before I know it he has me explain'in how I "scraped the guardrail" on the Learning Curve to Sea Crafts. I was Snookered...! Them NSA boys is always up in the "Cloud", watch'in ain't they.
Conner, here I am spinn'in these yarns on this forum about my Nautical Adventures trying to impress all these whipper snappers about back in the days when you and I were Buffalo Hunters and Denny comes along, like a Bull Shark and now ever'body here thinks the closest thing I got to a Sea Craft is the rubber ducky in mt bathtub. Now nobody believes me anymore - I feel like the POTUS....!
You've always been a man of Honor and Integrity. I'm sorry to have temporarily misjudged those qualities in you. I am learning to be extra cautious around that Robalo-erd though.

Stay'in ON TOPIC

OK, So I needed to check out the new "cutter-head" I ordered from Ken at Prop Gods, for the Dredge Marshtackie to make sure it would work properly at LONG POINT for the dredging I'm planning on doing. But man, the wind was howl'in at home and the weatherman said 18 to 22 from the ENE.

Then I remembered what Conner taught me back in the 70's - the "Weatherman De-Lier". First you take your boat to the ramp, like your going to go no matter what. Then you walk out on the dock with a solo cup filled half way with up Vodka. Then you put your back to the wind and look carefully in the solo cup. If it isn't "white capping" in the solo cup - you GO. If it is "white capping" in the cup, you drink the Vodka first and then GO!

The prop worked well - ready to go to work creating new channels at LONG POINT in May.

Man, I is so stink'in cold up here that I can't hardly think, but I got to think'in about Mcgillicutty and how he was just like Steve Miller and jumped on a "Big 'ol Jet Airliner" and flew to the Anclote Gathering rather than dragg'in his ol' 21 Moesly across the lower 48 with the Jeep. That guy is one smooth operator. So I'm study'in rather than hooking my ol' SeaCraft to the Hudson and driving south through 300 miles of slush to get to the paved Interstate highway in May, I might just fly down there to Long Point and sip some of Don V's elixir, ride in Conner's Safari, help detail the boats for the Saturday Pass in Review and Blessing of the Fleet at Port Carla and of course arm wrassle Kmoose! I have quite a few skins and pelts so I could just gather 'em up to trade and chisel the snowmobile out of the snowdrift and run it down to Moose Crossing. Then I could get Red Hargrove to take me in his snowcat to Moose Landing and catch the Otter into Moose Junction where the weekly Super Connie can take me down to Bangor where I can board one of them fancy 707's to the land of eternal SunShine. I think that is my new plan - molding my life after McGilliecutty.

Well it is actually "McGillicuddy", I'm going to mold my life after.
Sometimes I think my brain is like a sieve with mesh the size of a chain link fence. If I took a bucket of CoQ10 every morning with a Ginko Biloba chaser I still couldn't remember squat....! Soldier on, Brothers

DonV 01-10-2014 10:19 AM

I've met 'da Moose, however have not met you, but I'm thinking arm "rasslin" Ken is not a good idea. I'll be looking forward to your visit in May with some "apple pie" shine to mix with the CoQ10 and Ginko Biloba....should work perfect.

Yep, Up in the Maritimes. I get to use the 'ol 21 with the twin Homelites for our whole 2-1/2 week season up here. Expect to replace em' in '24 with a couple of those fancy new E-tecs then.

Bert is don'in pretty well and has almost fully recovered from that Narwhale attack. That dang thing stuck him, with his horn, right in the private parts when he tried to cast net 'em. I tried to tell him to leave the dang thing alone and stick to club'in those seals with the white fur. You remember, he's one of them hard headed Swedes and you can't tell him noth'in. He lern't pretty good now though.

I'm really look'in forward to the May Long Point gathering and meet'in all you tanned Floridians. They say they got some Bath'in Beauties down there. Ever seen one of them Sandy? I've never even seen a two piece bath'in suit except in the National Geographic magazines.

Man Gillie, Being from Cal-I-fornia, you must have every CCR album John Fogerty ever made to be able to write like that. I am fluent in Cracker and I had to study it for a long while to figure out what the heck you was say'in.

But the main reason for this thesis is to caution you, as a brother, not to get the "Man of the Cloth" (Padre Frank) tangled up in these discussions. He's busy doing Gods work and he ain't got time to wade around in no 2 stroke / 4 stroke arguments with us knuckleheads! My suggestion to you, at this point, is that you better get to church and get prayed up and paid up because if I understand it correctly you ain't even running a 2 stroke OR a 4 stroke outboard. You runnin and Chevy Nova makin' two 90 degree turns through a word that puts more fear in any mariner than the word "Kraken". I don't even want to type it for fear of the bad luck it brings just mentioning it. The word is [{(< Gimbal Bearing >)}].

You need to get right brother and you need to get right soon - especially if you are running the aforementioned!!!! And when you go to the Blessing of the Fleet you better make two passes.

Last time I made two passes, they had to wire my jaw shut. A blessing for many.

I am fluent in Southern Cracker, Vt. and N.H. woodchuck, and Bert and I.

Once you go to the northeast kingdom, all bets are off. In any of the threee.

Don`t worry about the good Father. He`s a Merc. guy and equally versed on all things 2 stroke, 4 stroke, diesel, and I would imagine future fuel?

I can tell you this -
I've found that the only thing worse than confusing a Florida Cracker with a Georgia Cracker is to confuse a Cuban with a Puerto Rican or a 4 stroker with a 50 to 1er. In all three cases, "them are fight'in words".

Long Point Dress Code

Sandy, I got a couple of them gift cards for Christmas and I'm think'in it might be easier to up-grade me than my Sea Craft, 'cause it's one of those really old Mosley's and it don't even have a boot stripe to worry about "whether I should use use tape or paint it on". (We got one of these guys on here talking about what color stitching he should have in his fender covers and another one wonder'in if he should paint a stripe on his truck to match to match his Tohatsu....!) Anyway gitt'in back to the main gist of this dissertation, I was wonder'in if I need to go out and buy one of those Col-umb-ia shirts wif all the pockets, epaulets, and ratchet straps already sowed on 'em? Looks like if you filled everything all up with stuff you'd resemble a Dung Beetle or somethin'. Did 'ya ever notice how them 4 stroke guys always got two or three pairs of sunglasses close by? They wear 'em on top of their hat, on top of their head, on the back of their head, and several around their neck festooned on all kinds of lanyards, halyards and leaders. I noticed most of 'em got real beady eyes and there usually set real close together too, so like them Matrix guys they got to always keep 'em covered up, and that's one of the reasons you see them wearin' those shirts all the time, 'cause they can stow away another dozen pairs or so. OK, so not to get off on that old 2 stroke / 4 stroke argument and stayin' focused like a laser beam on the topic at hand - "Should I get a Mauve colored one or just a white on which is $2.39 less and just throw it in my bilge wif some Purple Stuff and let it slosh around for a week or so?" I'm think'in it would look pretty dang snappy go'in along with them white boots and cut off coveralls I usually wear. I just want to creep up to the cutt'in edge of FASHION without crash'in through the guardrail of the learn'in curve and I know you know about that kind of stuff. Can 'ya help a brother out?
