I just binged on this whole thread and have to say you do incredible work and can't wait to see the finished product. 420 days so far by my calculations so yes I do believe
a Ferrari stamp is in order. |
SquidLips-
The only thing I could find about Eagle and DMR boats is this head boat that was made by DMR and called "Eagle". https://www.boats-and-harbors.com/co...=displayAdFile Perhaps the Booty Quest is not a DMR boat after all?? My father in a law has a place in Stuart and I used to captain a motor yacht out of Loblolly Marina in Hobe Sound. Will shoot you an email the next time I am down there. Would love to check out your 20'. |

When you first started this my thought was that there was no way it could ever be resurrected into much more than a work boat. The PO's work was not good. Then you started doing really good stuff on the structural side. Now it has become a work of art - even in it's unfinished state. What I am seeing is on par with the upper echelon of professional work; extremely well thought out and executed. I don't have any idea if you do this for a living or not, but your skills are amazing. And now I see you are still holding out on us - sitting next to this gem is what I think to be the chine line of a 20 Bertram.
Spill the beans please. |
Trust me, i wanted to do a workboat finish from the rubrail in! Im in on this boat with a buddy of mine actually, who somehow talked me into finishing it nice inside. Thanks for the compliments!
Yes that is a Bert, but its a 25... Some friends of mine are making a twin outboard CC out of it. Im mostly just the coach on that project. Ill snap some pics if you want |

A twin OB 25 Bert CC would be pretty special. 10' beam and 25 degrees of deadrise that actually sits right on the lines with the light OBs. Check out Marshtakie's twin OB 25 Bert somewhere on here. I made the mistake of having too much motor in my 20 Bert (300HP I/O) - handled awful at idle but it was real fun when I cranked it up. Quality boat porn is always good. The older I get the more I enjoy and can learn from other people's work. |
Dirtwheelsfl is a craftsman
Bushwacker and I visited dirtwheelsfl tonight and examined his restoration. He is a very talented and knowledgeable craftsmsn. Beautiful workmanship! Also a nice guy. Small world, my kids knew his cousins in high school.

I was gonna go with seafoam on my rebuild but since dirtwheels and topflite both beat me to it I would just look like a trendy poser. Guess I will have to go with Fighting lady yellow or flag blue. Dirt your build is inspirational and I am stealing your splashwell layout idea.
|
Good talking to you Terry and Denny!
Leland its actually a custom blend from a sherwin williams color called "waterfall". Its between aquqamist and seafoam, shows lighter in the sun. Fiberglass Florida in stuart has the formula if you want it. This is it on my old aquasport https://farm1.staticflickr.com/863/2...35aea6dc_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr Please anything but fighting lady yellow!! |
Looking really really nice! That's going to be one heck of a boat when your done. Quick question? Whats the make of the boat next to the seacraft in the 5th picture on post #91. Bertram 25? Thanks.

Live well

I had a Rambo and it had an in deck live well, it did well on the move or when the boat was in pitch and roll. In fact I'll see if I have any pics.
Recommend to be able to add a stand pipe drain and pump for fragile bait or calm @ dock times. Also a way to plug all intake holes. Don't know why but can't up load the pic. |
Exactly what i was going for! Do you have any more pics??
Was thinking 6 standard 1" holes. Trying to avoid pumps but there is a pad in there to mount one if need be... |
Got the center monstrosity (sp?) primed

I seriously don't understand how you get everything so smooth.
What do you use as your "general purpose" cloth? And squeegee or roller? Or maybe squeegee AND roller? I always end up with so many FRP stalactites waiting to bleed me to death... |
Assuming youre meaning the inside of the console? Majority of that is a 1400 biax with 1208 tabs. I guess general purpose is whatever ive got on hand thats suitable haha. Its all strategic as far as what i use where.
Ill rarely use a squeegee unless its a big flat surface with some light glass. Usually its foam rollers, they dont leave hair balls all over. If i can wet it out on a table then put into place i will, then hardroll it out. Then a good sanding obviously |
Quote:
Haven't tried that. Do you mean the hot dog type foam rollers, or the-foam-on-a-standard-size-cardboard tube roller? In addition to, or instead of a laminating roller? Thanks for indulging my annoying questions! |
No worries ask away! Hot dogs for small stuff, full sizers for big stuff. Paint brushes for really small stuff. Sometimes ill use em all at once if ive got large pieces of glass that end up in tight spots.
The foam doesnt "aerate" the resin as much during application like a traditional fuzzy one, which lets it penetrate quicker and easier and it doesnt leave that milky appearance. It hardrolls easier too when its nice n clear. Cant skip the laminating roller. Ive got different diameters/lengths of those too. I try to match the radius im glassing in to the diameter of the roller so youre not pushing all your fillet material out just as an example. Then theres different siZe fillet tools, that end up matching sanding tools... i can go on forever haha. |

Also the Rambo builder, I think is located in Georgia and still in business as far as I know. Why not call him about the LW hole set up. |
Quote:
Especially with epoxies? I find that with thicker resins, if I have to wet out in place I have to roll the heck out of it to get it to wet out evenly, and by the time i'ts wetted out sufficiently I've stretched it or warped it, and end up with hairball ends. Mostly on vertical or overhead surfaces. Floors I can do. :D My go-to utility glass is 1708 biax. Maybe that's too heavy? |
Always wet out the substrate before putting the glass on it, especially with 1708. It helps to dry fit it and make reference marks on the glass and whatever its going on. That way u know if its going on where it needs to be, its a real pain to try and move glass if its laying on a sticky wet out surface as im sure u know...
What epoxy are you using?? Sometimes ill warm up the resin just a bit to get the viscosity down... |

Same here.
Got the non CSC ready to go for a three hour tour if ya know what I mean. It'l be one of those 150 mile days on the left coast, leavin the dock @ 4:30. And yea it twas a pleasure. You are a master of glass work that I dream to be in the next life time. |
Bunny Coffin
Dirt, Really great meeting you last weekend at River Palm. I just went through the whole Squid Lips thread again. Outstanding work! I should have picked your brain about the Bunny/Coffin while its still fresh as I have been planning on going that route. Hope you can make it to Homosassa in Sept. Other than that I can stop by your place heading to or from the Carolinas this summer with a 18pack and a respirator.
Cheers, Ryan |
