New Fuel Tank... Finally

Finally got the new fuel tank – I installed it this past Saturday. Now I can move on to the original goal – transom replacement….

The tank came out really nice – I ordered and had one of the Wema (Reed Switch)style fuel sending units installed – seemed to be a better design than the old swing arm style.

Re: New Fuel Tank... Finally

Hey Jack,

Been following this and great job!!

Some questions on the tank install;

- Did you make ply strips on the tank floor support?
- Did you bond the tank down on the strips or floor?
- Did you coat the tank?
- The aft "L" bracket, are there spacers under it to secure?

Like the idea of "L" brackets front and back! Was scratching for a while on how to secure if the tank was not to be refoamed back in. Just to tie into the tops of foamed stringers did not seem to be enough.

Again great job!

- Nick

Re: New Fuel Tank... Finally

Nick – Thanks

I pretty much followed the instructions found all over this site.. – “How to install an aluminum fuel tank”

I found some plastic strips at Home Depot (composite lattice type strips) 2”Wx.25”Hx96”L.

I used Sikaflex 292 to bond five of them to the bottom of the tank lengthwise - Sikaflex 292 is a much better plastic to metal adhesive than any of the 3M products.
Put a little on the bottom of the strips to hold the tank to the floor – not much in case I ever need to remove the tank.

I opted NOT to coat the tank. The original uncoated tank lasted 29 years exposed to standing salt water in the foam AND the infamous carbon containing rubber strips.
I feared that any coating applied to the tank runs a risk of saltwater getting in between the coating and the aluminum.

I placed spacers everywhere – either starboard (used strictly as spacers on each side of the tank) or the composite lattice strips.

Re: New Fuel Tank... Finally

FishJack-
Did you not powder coat due to the expense? I'm at almost the exact same point in tank replacement and have the opportunity to powder coat the tank at a nominal cost.

Fishjack 04-19-2006 09:46 PM

Re: New Fuel Tank... Finally

Bonefish - Nope. Opted not to powder coat it..

About 4 or 5 posts back I asked about coating the tank and coating options got no responses..

Did some research, talked to some other people and decided to put it back with no coating.

If it only last 29 years with no coating that will be ok with me.

Thick Skinned...

I know most of you have seen this in person but I was very impressed by the thickness of the SeaCraft hull when I took a chunk out of her for the new B-60 ducer - here are some more boring pics.........

HermCO - not sure where I found it but it will be about all I have left when finished with this project ;)

Sure dreading filling up that new tank for the 1st time.
I guess it will be "bitter sweet".

You gonna need a lot of those pennies to fill that tank. If you are lucky we will invade an small oil rich mideast country and the price will go down.
Doh! We allready did that! :D

I just measured one of them their pennies and them things are ¾” tall. That’s a lot of glass.

I understand you reasoning, but I would have never done that and taken point's off the boat at resale for not doing it.

It's just to easy to do and the protection is well worth it.

Deck - hatch work... pics

Started working on the new deck piece. Recessed lip for the (Warthog suggested) Armstrong hatch. I think it’s going to work out well... Also building a lip for the hatch that covers the back of the tank to rest on…

A little more progress..

Finished the mounting locations for bilge pump #1 and bilge pump #2/auto switch and the new to the boat raw water pickup/seacock. I should have waited to paint the bilge.. now I am enjoying sanding/grinding the new paint off for these additions.. :(
I am tinting the final coat of epoxy resin white in the bilge area.. The big hole at bottom right of the 1st pic is for the B-60 txducer.

Fishjack,
What type of fairing compound did you use? How did it work out? Thanks
-andrew

Fishjack 06-07-2006 12:42 AM

Re: More pics of my slow progress..

Andrew - Using "QuickFair" by System Three - works great.
It's a two part epoxy based fairing compound with microballons.
Cures pretty quick. You can sand and re-apply in about 6hrs.

I still have more fairing to do. I am working on getting the transom cap in place then finish the transom fairing.

dcobbett 06-07-2006 09:54 AM

Re: More pics of my slow progress..

Fishjack,

When you are done fairing, how thick do you think the Quick Fair will be, and do you plan on overlaying it with anything to guard against skim coat cracking?

Fishjack 06-07-2006 01:40 PM

Re: More pics of my slow progress..

dcobbett - I am keeping the thickness of the fairing to a minimum. System Three recommends at least 2 coats of epoxy resin over the final layer of fairing.

I plan on tinting some of the RAKA epoxy red and rolling it over the quickfair when I finish. Then will lightly sand and prep for paint. Will roll and tip the paint (like the rest of the boat) with Signature Finish.

If you (or anyone) suspects that I might have problems with this plan (skim coat cracking etc.) please let me know.

Thanks

Congratulations on splashing the X-shark Bobby she looks GREAT...

Re: More pics of my slow progress..

fishjack,

No, just a question, and I don't have any reason (or experience) to suspect that the material might crack. I'm just getting into the rebuild stage of a new transom in my 20 Sea Craft right now, and I am debating if I should reattach the cut off glass piece I removed from the outside (should reduce the amount of fairing?), or throw it away and possibly make a stronger transom with multiple layers of Biaxial, realizing that I might have more fairing to do in the end.

Fishjack 06-08-2006 03:35 PM

Re: More pics of my slow progress..

dcobbett
I went the "throw it away" route for a couple of reasons – 1) I was going with a full transom vs. a notched transom. & 2) I figured that laying new glass on the new wood would make a much better bond than "gluing" the old skin back on with thickened epoxy.

The fairing – SO FAR – has not been that bad but I am using a 17” pneumatic straight-line sander – that helps ease the pain.. ;)

Re: Few More Pics...

Nice job! Just wondering, why plywood on the deck and composite for the sides? I am in the middle of making this decision for a future project. I assume strenght and weight and probably cost influenced you. Good luck with finishing her.

Fishjack 06-24-2006 06:53 PM

Re: Few More Pics...

Bryan - the main reason for the Penske Board on the transom cap and bulkhead was to cut down on weight.
Also I did not have enought 1/2 inch marine plywood to do the transom cap and bulkhead so I ordered the sheet of Penske board here locally and picked it up.
It is really easy to work with..

Finally Paint Time....

Took another couple of days off work here are the results. This has been a long arduous task only being able to work on the boat after work and on weekends..

The first couple of pics (where the transom looks pinkish) are 3 barrier coats of tinted epoxy over the system3 quickfair. Faired that out and now have put on my first coat of paint.

Took tomorrow (Friday) off work and plan on working on her for the next four days straight. Still have a lot of fairing and sanding to do on the interior but I’m getting there.

My boat will look new from the console aft, I plan on prepping and painting the fore deck after I get her back running (AND FISHING)…
