That motor isn't a 1996 by any chance?

Yes the motor is a 1996. It's the one tim was telling you about. I'd rather have put a Suzuki 4 stroke on her but right now I have to be practical. I still have all the rigging from my last motor.

Mold with recesssed areas for future access hatches. It is waxed and ready for lay up. The radius's were made using modeling compounds from the local craft's store. It's not perfect but it dosent need to be.

I noticed in the shots where you had it on the boat that the stern edge mold board was against the transom.....so you did allow for that in the spacing to the front of the cap so you can slide it back the thickness of the glass???

Thats correct. I will cut the excess away and lign up the rear edge (13 degree angle) with the outer skin just set forward of it so I can get a couple layers of glass on it. I will glass the inside first like in the pic below. After that dries I will glass the outside. There will be a fair ammount of sanding and fairing to get it looking right.

In the end I hope to get it to look something like this. I like a nice sexy ass on my boats...always been an ass man....just cant help it

Not trying to hijack the thread but, speaking of 1996 Yamaha 225 2-cycles, is it a good motor or is there something to watch out for, besides the fuel filters?

They are great engines. My father has a rebuilt '97 on his Sceptre that he bought 3-4 years ago (replaced a tired '89 225 Evinrude looper). No problems whatsoever after 400+ hours. Those engines have great midrange torque - his boat will plane at 13 knots and run the same cruise and WOT speed regardless of load.

Botapeje,
As reelescape1 mentioned, the shift shaft is something check. Also, definitely do a compression test plus a leakdown test if possible.

Pictures showing the mold with lay up complete. There are 4 layers of 1/2 ounce matt and 4 layers of 1708. The corners were reinforced with 4 inch 1708 tape.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5695.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5694.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5701.JPG

All cured and ready to be popped out. My kids gave me a little help with this part. I told them it's kinda like a Christmas present when you cant wait to see what you have inside.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5702.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5704.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5705.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5706.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5707.JPG

As you can see the edge with the bigger radius was still a little wet and gooey. Thus all the fibers. This was the edge were I used the brown Oven craft clay. It was a wet (water based) clay and I think the moisture leaked into the glass in this area. It's not as bad as it looks and will sand out easily once I dry that edge.

Re: Here We Go Again

Bryan- I think it probably would work. I had never used the water based stuff before but I thought I'd give it a try because it smoothed out really well. The stuff on the right in the pics above works really well it's almost like wax.

Not much done today. Cut the cap for a rough fit.

I took plastic sheeting cut into 5 inch strips. I wiped some wax on them and then glassed 2 layers of 2 ounce matt to the waxed surface.
http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5731.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5732.JPG

These were then screwed to the gunnel cap at the locations that need to be filled in.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5734.JPG
http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5735.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5737.JPG

After the glass dries the plastic will come out and the glass will stay making good backing to fill in these locations. I will reinforce the front and back sides of these areas. I left them long so they can be trimmed once glassing is complete.

I extended the floor to the transom and cut out an area for the scuppers.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5738.JPG

I wasted about 2 hours today trying to figure out how to make the old scuppers work. I liked that they dipped down into a little bowl before going out the transom. I finally scraped the idea and will go with something else.

The transom cap preped for tabbing to the hull. I ground a 3 inch area were the 1708 tape will adhere to.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5743.JPG

tempory cleats help to keep the cap in a level position.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5740.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5741.JPG

Tape cut to length and ready to be glassed. The stuff on top will glass the cap to the inside of the transom.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5747.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5748.JPG

Tabbed into place.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5749.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5750.JPG

when this dries I will glass the outside of the cap to the transom.

Great work Strick “Your Da Man” you have taught me a lot about making molds with fiberglass. When I did my boat I didn’t even think about doing much with making molds first I used the typical fix it up approach of doing transoms, removing and replacing lamination and replacing decks, and doing caps, filling up holes and re doing things like that.
The way you go about things is how boat builders do stuff not like a fix it up guys like myself. I have done a few things with molds like making rod holder box for the sides of my center consol and making a 32 gal live well but other than that not much. You should start a boat building co and leave this fix up stuff to us armatures.

Strick, Just a bit behind where you are on your boat and loosing ground fast the way your moving. I found these drains at a local supplier they actually have a ball valve inside. I dished out the floor in the back to recess them some before I glassed. Not to take you back to far but do you think that some layers of 1708 on the sides of the hull would add enough strength or is the coring nessasary.http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u...ture123192.jpg

Snookered-I'm stilling pulling stricks once in a while but not as bad as that first one!

bbh57- Those are nice looking scuppers. I'm still undecided but I may make my own or go with something that does not loose so much elevation. Coring it will make it a lot stronger then just laying up the extra glass.

I'm starting to feel burnt out and I'm having to force myself to work on the boat....staying up late into the evening. The only thing keeping me going is that I'm starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel. I ran out of Brandy and drank my last beer today. I'm ready for another one of Fellowships Pep Talks.

I've been a glassing fool lately. The transom cap is glassed to the hull inside and out. shot showing the inside floor.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5765.JPG

On the outer perimeter cabosil was used to fill the gap you see and then ran over some of the rough edges to smooth them out so the glass will contour better.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5760.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5761.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5763.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5764.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5769.JPG

couple shots showing the rear. I glassed in the notch with several layers of 2 ounce matt.

Where I'm doing most of my work.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5773.JPG

I'll be having a 30x30 shop built next to this in a couple months with a breeze way connecting to this 18x30 carport. It will have two 10'x10' roll up doors and a cement slab. No more of this working in the dirt crap.

I poped out the plastic pieces that were used to hold in place the fiberglass backing to fill in the areas of the gunnel cap.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5734.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5758.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5757.JPG

These areas were then preped for glass to be added to the outside.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5762.JPG

Extra glass added. It's strong as heck now. This glass is 1/4 inch thick.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5794.JPG

I made some measurements and used a straight edge and a grinder to cut the uneven gunnel.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5781.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5782.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5797.JPG

I wanted the glass to flow evenly from the cap thru the side supports and to the floor to I layed up some heavy matt on waxed plastic FRP and pressed it into the preped side supports.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5799.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5809.JPG

Last piece of the gunnel held in the proper position with some cleats.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5775.JPG

I wanted the raised edge on this piece to kinda faid away as it approached the transom cap.

52 gallon gas tank

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5801.JPG

I have about 3/4 inch clearance from the bottom of were the floor sits. This is counting the fuel tank supports that will be under the tank. I may have to get creative here down the road.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5802.JPG

I used the grinder to clean up the bilge

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5804.JPG

The tank will sit on 6 Six inch wide 1/2 inch strips of plywood that will be glassed to place. Here is a pic of the bottom of the strips glassed and ready to be set into place.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5805.JPG

The glass was left long so it can be ran up the sides of the stringers. There is a layer of 1708 glassing the top of the wood to the stringers as well.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN5807.JPG

When this sets up I will finish glassing the top surface. Thats it for now.

There is one screw in each that is helping to keep them level. The boards should be stiff and strong enough after they are glassed in place so they wont budge so I was planning on removing the screws before I glass over the top. However it probably wont hurt to add another screw (2 per support) down into the keel and just leave them under the glass. Since they are glassed top and bottom there should be no way for water to get into the areas were the screws are.

Thanks Fellowship I needed that. In fact I went backwards in time and found your old post. I wanted to show it for everyone to see so if they ever feel wooped like I do right now your words of wisdom will help them like it has me.

Fellowships old post:

" Ha Strick, I know what your problem is, it kind a sneaks up on you and before you know it, your are is the slumps of boat re building. Most of the guys on this board have had various degrees of the symptoms and we all talked about it several months ago. You probably mist this conversation and I don’t remember which topic it was on but, I can help you. Your problem is that you have made a major mistake in all you calculations, you for got to add a major factor in your project. That factor is called the BEER FACTOR you must add a portion of your time and energy in this very important part of boat building (its like vitamins) if you are going to stay on track with your boat. For example, if you don’t consider the Beer Factor in a transom replacement you will have problems. If I can remember correctly, it’s something like this. Transom job = 10 Days work X Cost of job X Nastiness of job = “THE BEER FACTOR”. 10X $500 X 4 ON THE NASTY LIST = 6 TO 10 SIX PACKS OF BEER.
If you have not factored this formula than boat building blues will definitely set in. Not to worry, you can get help and rejuvenate your self by simply taking the day off go the grocery get the proper brand and sit by you boat and look at all the work you have done and sip, sip, sip, think of all the fun you will have after the project is finished and sip, sip, sip, through away your anticipated date of completion and sip, sip, sip. After a few hrs or rejuvenation you will start feeling fine again. “TRUST ME ON THIS ONE”

Beau- The tank was hooked up to a propane heater. We have crawdads here in calif but they are not as popular as they are in the south. Probably because most of the folks out here are the liberal/yuppie type used to eating hummis pie with alfalfa sprouts on the side washing it all down with a carmal lattae (sp?) I Used to catch them in a local creek as a kid and they are good. I think Spidercrab lives in your neck of the woods maybe he will chime in here and give us a some good crawdad recipes.

Chaos-welcome to the site. What boat are you redoing? if it's a SeaCraft get that thing over here ASAP beacuse we are lacking SeaCrafts in this neck of the woods. Makos are welcome also.

Dave- Yes it's an Olympus pediatric endoscope. I think I use it more on boats then I do on horses. It's great for looking into the tubing of your t-top.
