Re: I Need A Shrink !
Yeah, Strick, I've seen red, white, yellow and the predominant one, the orange Golden Poppy. Red is definitely the prettiest. Symbol of the American Legion, I think. See them going up and down the grapevine over Tehachapi pass on the way to fish the Kern River north of Bakerspatch. And across the 138 to the 395 - the long way to Owens River. Kind of the west edge of the Mohave Desert - next couple of weeks should have insane blooms after the coming rains...might just have to make a road trip.
I used 1-1/2" angle cleats on my seat boxes and they are stout. Your Seafari looks awesome! looking forward to the next slide show. |

You had mentioned earlier in this thread that you were going to build a fiberglass swim platform. You must have changed your mind? If you had built a fiberglass swim platform, how would you have gone about making the mold and doing the layout schedule on the fiberglass? I'm interested in helping one buddy add a fiberglass swim platform to a 1978 18 foot BeachCraft open-bow runabout. If this works, another buddy would like to add a fiberglass swim platform to his 1996 20 foot Glastron open-bow runabout. The cost from the two swim platform manufacaturers in Arizona would run around $1500-$1600 for a delivered swim platform. Far too expensive of a proposition for these two older boats. Here are a couple of links that show some [incomplete] pictures on how one marine fabricator makes fiberglass swim platforms. fiberglass swim platform construction 1 fiberglass swim platform construction 2 Thanks! Re: I Need A Shrink !
Gil- I never seen any white poppies but I have seen a few yellow poppies. We got tons of the little flowwering weed in my area. I was thinking of glassing in a cleat but now that you mention it I guess I could use some aluminum angle. I need to be able to calk around the bottom of the seat boxes for obvious reasons.
Titaniumboy- I decided for now just to keep the teak swim platform. It is such a nice looking piece of wood and is heavy duty as well. If I were to make a fiberglass swim platform I would have gone about it much like the old gal in the photos on the link you posted. Lay up would have been something like this. One layer Duratec sanding primer, Two layers 1.5 ounce matt, One layer 1708, 3/4 inch core cell and two layers 1708. Pop out of the mold then sand and paint with Awlgrip. Either have some braces welded up or make some fiberglass ones. Some more photos of the second seat box coming out of the mold. This one will have the livewell inside. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/255.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/256.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/257.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/258.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/259.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/261.JPG strick |

Thanks for the reply. I do like the look of your teak platform. Did you build this yourself? If you did, where were you able to find the teak lumber, and at what kind of price per board foot? Regarding a fiberglass platform, you mentioned using 3/4" core cell. Could one use 3/4" plywood or end-grain balsa instead? If the wood would work, would it still need to be 3/4" or could you go down to 1/2" or 3/8"? You said after that after popping the swim platform out of the mold to sand and paint it. Does that mean I wouldn't need to do any fairing work? Thanks again! Looking forward to more progress pictures of your restoration. Titaniumboy |
Re: I Need A Shrink !
Moving along steady as she goes. This is a male mold for the fish box/cooler. Made out of 5/8" MDF except for the bottom flange which is 1/4" exterior grade plywood. Its 34 inches long and 15 inches deep.
http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/263.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/264.JPG I sanded it with 220. Clay was used to fill the staple holes and any imperfections. Then it was sprayed with duratec high gloss. The high gloss gets sanded lightly with 220 and 3 coats of wax are applied buffing in between coats. Tonight I sprayed it with 5 coats of PVA. It still might be a royal pain to remove from the part so stay tuned. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/265.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/266.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/267.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/268.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/269.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/275.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/276.JPG This afternoon we were able to apply Awlgrip 545 epoxy primer to the bottom and sides of the hull. There are 2 heavy coats on right now. The primer will help show any small imperfections that need to be fixed. We will fix those and then 2 more coats of the primer will be applied. Then the boat will get block sanded and readied for paint. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/270.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/271.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/272.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/273.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/274.JPG Side cabin windows have tinted tempered glass. I will most likely be painting all of the window frames on this boat with Awlgrip off white. I told the window guy that I would mount the windows but he went ahead and did it any way so I guess I will be taping these windows off prior to paint. These were the only windows that I had to have made. All the others are brand new and in boxes waiting to be installed. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/262.JPG strick |

Re: I Need A Shrink !
Getting a little worn out lately and I've been having to force myself to work. Also the elements are against me. The Bugs are out in full force...millions of little gnats and giant mosquito killers buzz the shop at night if I leave the doors open...but you got to have ventilation when doing glass work. I quit early tonight.
Another delima is my neighbors cotton wood tree. My grass looks like it got snowed on this weekend. It did not really matter for priming the boat. I put the giant tarps up and it kept most of the stuff off the boat However there is no way I'm going to be able to paint until this Bleeping tree sheds it's cotton...and I wanted to paint the bottom of the hull next weekend. Here is the culprit: http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/277.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/278.JPG The mold for the cooler/fish box has been Gel coated and is ready to be glassed http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/288.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/289.JPG I started to make the mold for the live well that will go into the other seat box. It's 25 inches long and 15 inches deep...not big by any standards but it will do for keeping Bull heads and perch alive. I can probably put 1/2 scoop anchovies in it but that's about it. I guess I can always strap a portable one on the swim platform if I go tuna fishing. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/279.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/286.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/287.JPG The gray primer I applied on Saturday helped reveal some small spider cracks in three areas so we ground those out and applied quick fair. Right now I'm waiting for that to dry so I can sand it down and put two more coats of primer on the hull. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/281.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/282.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/283.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/284.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/285.JPG Strick |

strick,
Nice work, and the rate of progress is impressive. I'm looking forward to seeing all the parts come together. I expect I'll be referring back to this thread frequently when I get started on mine. Have you decided what to do with your other 25? CC conversion, maybe? You don't happen to have a spare windshield laying around, do you? :) Dave |
Re: I Need A Shrink !
Dave- I don't have the stomach for another boat restoration...just takes up too energy and time. The windshield on the other 25 will have to go with the boat when I put it up for sale. Not sure when that will be as I'm using it for reference while I re do this one.
I finished the liner for the fish box the other night. It has 5 layers of 1.5 oz matt and it fits nicely. No problem getting it out of the mold. I still have to glass it in place. Tonight I waxed and put down PVA on the live well so hopefully I will be making that part tomorrow evening. Some shots of the liner. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/290.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/291.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/292.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/293.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/294.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/295.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/296.JPG Strick |

Re: I Need A Shrink !
Progress has been slowed some on the 25 seafari but I have managed to get a little work accomplished over the last two weeks.
The seat boxes have been painted http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/308.JPG Holes were cut for the Plumbing for the live well and fish box. The fish box will have one drain and the live well will have a fill, drain and overflow. A little thought had to go into were these holes were cut because the hoses for these fittings will route under the deck and back to the transom. I had to put the seat boxes in the boat to get the right measurements. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/317.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/318.JPG with that out of the way I then glassed the live well and fish box to the underside of the seat boxes. I first glued them in place with some construction adhesive and then used 6" 1708 tape around the perimeter. A bead of 3M 4200 was run around the perimeter on the inside to ensure there will be no leaks. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/319.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/321.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/322.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/323.JPG That was allowed to set up overnight and then I used spray foam to insulate. The spray foam worked great and was a cheap and efficient way to insulate. It was a little tedious to apply and I had to make an extension off the can to reach deep into the seat box but I got good coverage. It is compatible with polyester resin. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/324.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/325.JPG I needed to make a bulkhead for the anchor locker since this boat did not come with one. Since my molding table is a mess right now I waxed and buffed a piece of hard board and then sprayed with PVA. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/309.JPG 50/50 White Gel coat and duratec high gloss clear additive was brushed on and then 2 layers of heavy matt http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/310.JPG I borrowed the bulkhead out of the other 25 seafari to use as a template and cut a $38 piece of 3/4 ply and then glued it down with cabosil. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/311.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/312.JPG The finished bulkhead. The back and and edges will get a nice heavy layer of Gelcoat http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/313.JPG A couple weekends ago I turned the boat port into a spray booth again by tarping off both ends. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/306.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/307.JPG and I was finally able to get the sides of the hull sprayed. This is Awlgrip Kingstone Gray. I still have to apply the boot stripe. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/314.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/315.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/316.JPG The tower is in the shop as it needs some work prior to painting. It will get painted Awlgrip off white. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/320.JPG This evening we secured the top cap to the hull with ss bolts and aluminum rivets. I will post again as soon as I get something worth posting. Time to go watch some Deadliest Catch re-runs. strick |

Re: I Need A Shrink !
Just my 2 cents here but I would suggest you leave the tower off the boat, or remove the "launchers" and just use the arch. After so much excellent work done on the boat, and how beautiful it's looking, that thing would just detract from the total package and make it look tacky, like you "Bubbaized" it!

Re: I Need A Shrink !

I think you should start building custom Seacrafts, and rebadge them as "STRICK CRAFT" You could be to Seacraft, what Jack Roush is to Mustang. |
Re: I Need A Shrink !
Fabulous work, puts mine to shame!
Something to think about. This hull is sensitive to weight up high. You might want to put it in the water, test how it handles and then put the tower on and test again. I work with a guy who owned one years ago. He put on a big tower (with steering station) and said it was a bad idea. When he was in the tower and made a turn, it leaned over so far that he felt like "you could kiss the water's surface". The tower weight was enough to affect stability even with nobody in it. |
Re: I Need A Shrink !
Thanks fellas for the nice comments and valuable advice. I'm gonna see about having it modified. Need the radar arch for sure....the visor part and the rocket launchers I'm not too sure about.

Re: I Need A Shrink !
You could kiss the water surface, even in the captains chair. I grew up thinking this boat was unsinkable and self righting with all my Grandfathers and uncles stories over the years. I think I have told a few of those stories on this board. It was only after finding this site, that I started to think otherwise. I used to purposely lay the boat on her side, just to touch the water from the captains chair, for kicks. It seems foolish now but not when I was a teenager. Anyway I could never even make her cavitate with all that foolishness. A high tower with helm would make a difference but I dont think Stricks tower will make too much of a difference, especially if he removes 53 of those rod holders :D
I always wanted a radar arch. The boat does need a place for the antennae for the toys. If I ever get any of those toys, I'll have to find an alternative as I will, one day, move her to Nova Scotia(that might be soon as I just bought a trailer) and I have one low bridge at high tide on my river and want to be able to use the boat in any tide. I think she looks sharp with the tower. Looking forward to seeing her with the windshield on. Brandon |

Calking is in place to seal the joint around the boat. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/352.JPG The rub rail on this boat is in fairly good shape.
