Terry, You're making such great progress! She's really coming along great & cleaning up nicely. I'm soooo envious!
Skip & I definitely want bunks in our 21, but we're so far away from that point.

Will you build new seat boxes? or pedastal seats?

Transom Help....How to cut?
 

OK today I took off the skin on the transom. Most of the wood was not all that bad for 40 years. However where the cap was joined to the transom, it leaked over the years and is mush at the top corners.

QUESTION...When replacing the transom, how far back do I cut the stringers??? Or do I just trim enough away and then fill later on with epoxy after the new transom is in.

Not sure what you mean by fill later with epoxy but you should trim back just enough to be able to slide in your new core. It's gonna be a pain to replace the transom from the inside with the cap in place. Are you going to remove the cap at the transom? I see that the cap looks to be glassed to the hull. If thats the case then you may just want to cut away the cap at the transom replace your core and then laminate the cap back in place after you replace the transom. Another option would be to cut a "notch" in the top cap and slide in the new core from the top then fill the notch later. You are about to dig in nice and deep with this project. :D Hope some of this helps.

What I really meant to say,fill with epoxy thickened with cabosil. Would this be the right thing to do?

I will take the back cap off. There is a natural cut point and to put back on should be almost painless.

Hmmm, I agree, a Merc 350 would look nice in there, not to mention a VW or Volvo diesel!

Update on Rebuild 2/20/08
 

Got a bunch of things done over the weekend. First was getting the wood out of the transom. Not to bad, just had to have the right tools. A little wood chiseling at the bottom. No cutting of the stringers. They were tabbed in nicely and not ultra tight.

Over the last few weeks I have been working on my front deck. Previous posts showed that all the balsa core was wet beyond saving. I decided to save weight and use a product called Tuff Stuff. It is a polyurethane 1/2 inch and was scrim and scored.

I first made my check list, and then built the bridge to reform the crown. After that was done the old bottom glass was cleaned up and prep with epoxy. The tuff stuff was also prep with epoxy and then the score side was filled with epoxy,cabosil, and micro balloons. This same mixture except a little thicker was troweled on the bottom and then the tuff stuff placed scored side down.

The pictures will show some of the process. All pieces were numbered on the dry fit and then marked so I could line them up easily. The crown is back and looks good.

Now I will prep the old skin and put that on in the next week.
