Re: Finally Paint Time....
Nice job. Did you just tint regular epoxy or use a special epoxy bariercoat paint? And what did you tint it with? I have never seen that done before but it makes alot of sense. Keep up the good work.

Re: Finally Paint Time....
Thanks for the comments guys. Here is what we accomplished today…

Bracket and Motor ON might test run tomorrow...
I have worked all day into the night the last 3 days.. have some more wiring to do but hope to test run tomorrow...
Got the bracket and engine back on yesterday.. re-wired the motor today.. Installed the new SeaStar system. Mounted the bilge pumps.. B-60.. water pickup.. and a lot of other misc items. Hope to get a chance to run her late tomorrow. Here are a few more pics - http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0714.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0715.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0720.jpg I have been way to busy to take more pics but will take more of the inside tomorrow. |
Splashed!!!!!!!
Well finished the transom - ran new bilge hoses and wiring, mounted all equipment in the transom area (oil tank, trim tab HPU, fuel filter, flow sensor, installed (+) and (-) buss bars and other items) in the large hatch on the transom bulkhead.
Still have to finish painting the deck from about the console up but wanted to get it back in the water. Still have to mount the 3 new rod holders across the back of the transom, re-install the two removed off the cap and finish dressing cables/hoses etc. But anyway here she sits in the water - the Yam fired right up and ran great. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0725.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0722.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0724.jpg Mounted the new leaning post I bought from BA17 - thanks Brian it's great!!! http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0723.jpg The stearn sits higher in the water than before. I was afraid that it would be heavier but seems like that is not the case. I only put 70 gallons of fuel on her for the test run. Did I mention the transom is SOLID AS A ROCK :D What a difference the new space in the cockpit area makes. Can't wait to bloody her up. Thanks to everyone for the help along the way.. Will post more pics soon - action shots and more details of the newly laid out bilge area etc.. One thing that is strange :D - I remounted the transom bracket in exactly the same spot. Now the motor cavitates and I cannot get as much trim out of it?? While someone else was running the boat I stood on the bracket and the cavitation plate is about 1 inch above the surface of the water?? I guess the transom was flexing so much before with the thrust of the motor that it was forcing the engine down to the proper running angle?? I am going to drop the engine one bolt hole and see if that helps. Anyone else experience this? |
Re: Splashed!!!!!!!
Jack,
It looks fantastic. Wow!!! Peter |

Re: Splashed!!!!!!!
Way to go, looks good Jack, I can't wait to see it in person.
|
Re: Splashed!!!!!!!
Glad to see this Jack. :D
What hole from the top is the motor mounted in now? Sound's like your on the right track. |
Re: Splashed!!!!!!!
Thanks for the compliments guys – still have a bunch of work to do. Next major undertaking will be removing the cap, re-core/repaint, new S.S. rubrail and mount all flush/recessed hardware/lights. That will be sometime in the winter. I have missed enough fishing this summer to start that now. AND epoxy is no fun to work with in 90+ degree heat..
Warthog – I have one hole left at the top of the engine bracket so it should drop about 1 inch. I know the standard is 1 inch up for every 1 foot back as far as brackets go. I sure hope that does it. I never had any problems with the prop blowing out (aeration) before but now in turns and when trimmed up even the slightest amount it aerates. The ONLY other change was mounting the B-60 xducer and a water pickup but they are well to the sides of keel. Will try and drop the motor tonight and test run this weekend. |
Re: Splashed!!!!!!!
Each hole is = to 3/4in. I too hope it work's for 'ya.
I need to raise my motor's. I think there is to much drag. They do not blow out. I leave them trimmed at 1/4 on the guage. Anymore and it want's to raise the bow. I put more tab in it to bring the bow down. The fuel management guage is a excllent tool for trimming the boat. I'm still in serch of the illusive 3mpg. I get about 2.2 to 2.3mpg now. |
Re: Splashed!!!!!!!
Bobby - When you raise or lower the engines on the bracket how do you ensure another good seal? Remove all the bolts, re-coat and replace? Looks like we will be going in opposite directions - yours UP mine DOWN.
According to my flow scan I am at 2.4-2.5 Avg MPG at 34-35 MPH. With your twin Suzies you will be doing great to get 3 MPG.. FWIW - I Called Don at D&D to verify the height of the motor - he said that with my single D&D OB bracket the cavitation plate should be 3 1/2 inches above the keel. I took a long straight edge and measured it - my motor is currently at 4 1/2 inches. Dropping it one hole should make it about perfect - we'll see. |
Re: Splashed!!!!!!!
Sound's good.
Yea, just unbolt the motor and slide it back a couple of inch's. Clean the surface the best you can and reseal it and bolt the motor back on. I have rubber pad's between the motor's and bracket. Stole that idea from Armstrong. Still use sealer. |
Re: Splashed!!!!!!!
What exactly are you guys sealing? If I may ask :D
Looks great Fish Jack. sounds like you are too high. My anti cavitation plate is 3.5" with my 250 Yamaha 25 inch shaft. No prop blow out. strick |

Re: Splashed!!!!!!!
Awesome job!!!! I splashed mine 4 weeks ago after my transom job and I won't forget the feeling.

Re: Splashed!!!!!!!
Thanks again for the compliments – I am still working on getting the wiring finished – dressed in and secured properly.
I lowered the motor the one remaining bolt hole, test ran on Saturday and it is a lot better. Still cannot get as much trim out of it as I could before. It is currently at 3 ¾ inches above the keel. Needs to eventually go down another ¼ inch or so… I can deal with it for now just to get some fishing done. I am also recovering the side coaming bolsters, re-finishing the original teak rod holders, mounting (3) 15 degree rod holders in the transom cap and some other misc. stuff. Will post more pics ASAP. |
Few more detail pics...
Still have wiring work to do and tidy up..
I installed the 3 rod holders across the back transom cap, replaced the Yamaha oil fill with a S.S. pop up cap model and finished the bolsters. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0784.jpg Oil Fill - http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0774.jpg I bought some PVC end caps and fabricated some drains to attach to the bottoms of the rod holders. Installed some set screws and sealed them to the bottom of each rod holder. The 3/8" hose routes down into the bilge to keep any saltwater off my "stuff" mounted under the transom cap. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0776.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0775.jpg Some pics of the fuel filter, flow sensor, HPU and other stuff mounted on the inside of the transom.. Like I said I am not finished wiring but getting there. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0761.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0777.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0778.jpg Pic of the newly refinished original teak rod holders and new bolsters - http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...k/IMGP0782.jpg |

NEED HELP!! transom repair
I bought a 73, 23 ft. Seacraft three years ago, had bottom paint soda blasted, repaired major blisters, barrier coated and painted bottom, sanded and powder coated windshield frame and replaced all class. This year I bought new repower package [350 mercruiser bravo one, mpi, seacore. My problem is after trying to install transom assembly I realized the transom was a little soft at one lower corner and was not able to torque nut to 25 ft.lbs.
Has anybody used gitrot in this situation or how should I repair the transom. After losing two summers, I hate to lose another. Thanks for any information you can give me, Motbed |
