The baiting is so popular here the DNR sets a 60 day season. We're limited to 48 qts. heads on per day. Generally there are 10 marker poles placed at your favorite spot, 50/50 fish meal /clay is mixed with water and formed into baseball size flattened patties strategically placed near the marker poles and then you throw the net. My best has been 6 passes with an overflowing cooler. Then the deheading begins.

You will have to show us, i may have to learn a better more efficient technique, Do I smell a Gia-normous shrimp boil at the get together. BTW, ever tried beer boiled shrimp??

GFS-The shrimping is a fun past time on the flats here. A buddy of mine said they are big over here already this year. I would trade you the dip netting here for those spiney lobsters off the coast there ;) Just don't go out on the shark feeding dive trips in Riviera Beach.

Re: Long Point April 11-12

Snookered,
I use to live up by Melbourne in `80/`81 and George ,my fellow Yankee transplant and barney surfer/fishin bud and I would grab a 12 pack ,a Coleman lantern, dip nets and hit our favorite canal bridge during the run. On a really good night we could fill a bucket.

The dive boats are a hoot here. They lose people on a daily basis. We happily ferry them back to H.Q. . In all fairness, the stream rips here, but it`s fun to count the flippers flailing just the same. In Dec. a 42`er rolled goin outta Boynton. He actually went on camera on the local news. Next on Springer, dive boat mayhem! The pump house went down again and the bars / shoaling is at critical mass. Someone`s gonna die soon. All talk , no action. Blah , blah, blah. What your dog actually hears? Sorry about your master`s passing.

Dixon, Desoto was about 20 people... :D
Long Point is about 120 people...
This will take alittle planning to come off right.
I plan to bring about 20 lbs. of jumbos ;)
and steam them again.
If everyone brings a side dish IE: tater salad, macaroni
salad, baked beans, cole slaw, etc, etc...
We can set up tables and grills in the center section
and cookup a storm. Also bring hamburgers, hot dogs, steaks
or whatever. Spidercrab will have plenty of possum fer
all ov us.
Capt Brian, make that dip a "man" dip this time for those shrimp. That last batch was a little weak..
Otto, make sure you get that vaccination before you head
south.

We still need to set a time for Boatpix.com to photo
all of us running out the inlet..
Saturday morning early would probably be the best seas
if the weather cooperates.
Spending the day today putting a "foo foo"
on the NoBones...

Can't wait, Ken

For the gathering on Saturday, we could reserve the pavillion that is close to the camp sites we reserved.

Jon, I checked with the park and they charge $53 to
reserve the one by the pond. We could use it for free
if it is not resevered that day. Carol at the park
said it was a safe bet it would be available Saturday.
That is a ways from where we are. If those that can
bring a folding table and extra chairs we could set up
our own area at the point..

See ya, Ken

Re: Long Point April 11-12

When we have done get togethers at Longpoint, we usually don't reserve the pavillions. If it isn't reserved by now, it probably will be open, and then you don't have to pay for it. You just might want to send a couple people over with some "stuff" earlier in the day to set up.

If I may add a few points of local knowledge. Favor the north side of the inlet, especially at low tide (BTW, the tide change at the inlet is 2 1/2 hours after what the tide tables say for Sebastian), I have seen outboard boats hit bottom near the end of the south jetty. Stay just outside of casting range of the fisherman on the north jetty and you will have plenty of water.

Also, be aware of "Monster Hole", which is a few hundred yards out, on the south side of the inlet. Monster Hole breaks if there is any swell. It is best to cut north once you clear the north jetty as you head out of the inlet.

Let hope for calm weather, and the inlet will be tame. But if there is any kind of seas out of the east, please use caution, especially on the out going tide.

And don't forget, we can always play in the Indian River :)

We are looking forward to a great time!

Re: Long Point April 11-12

I used to fish the pier in `79-81. Just watch the rats and they`ll show you where the bait is. My brother, various friends and I used to jump off the bridge going over the inlet on the outgoing tide. About 68 ft. or so. We talked 2 cute girls into jumping and one leaned forward a little on entry. My brother and I jumped in after her and got her to the ladder. Knocked the wind out of her and probably cracked a rib or two. I was up in Beantown in Oct and we thanked our lucky stars AGAIN. We were very lucky and no we didn`t get lucky.

Pinners yes chum yes cast net yes sabikis yes. Surfers already know it`s the best break on the east coast.

Re: Long Point April 11-12

Easiest rig for pinfish is small gold hooks with small pieces of peeled shrimp. Try along the mangroves on in inside of the inlet's north side.

My 5 year old will catch 'em all day on his "Scooby-Doo" rod :D

On certain out going tides, there are schools of oversized redfish in the inlet. When they are there, double and triple hook ups are not uncommon  Drop down anything live while drifting out the inlet east of the bridge.

Just wanted to post here to see if anyone is coming in Thursday? I'll be pulling in by noon. I just made a reservation at the Floridana Beach Motel Melbourne Beach, Florida. They have well lit parking for trailers and their rate is 65 bucks. I believe they have 2 rooms left. Here is their website.

http://www.motelfloridana.com/

If anyone wants to get together for dinner or a cold one let me know. If anyone else is already hosting dinner/cocktails please let me know. Thanks!

I will be dropping the boat in around 8am Fri at the Long Point ramp and doing some gunkholeing. Let's get things started early. I AM PUMPED!!!!!!! Is Ken taking bets on weather the mighty volvo can tow the 23 177 miles? I just got new tires, brakes and a motor.

I will heading over very early Friday so should be in the water mid morning. I'm going east to Vero and then north, I just can never pass up an opportunity to go to YEE HAW JUNCTION, seems much shorter too. Brian to much traffic for you with the 23 though, you need the better roads.

Anyone have a pinfish trap ???? it would be sweet to put out at the park to save time. I will bring my bait motel so the kids can help too if they want.

I have gotten permission from Jerry Schiaccitano at AAA Outboard, a local Mercury dealer, to bring a collection of used and new props to try out on various boat. If you find one you really like, you will also be able to buy it on the spot. (No, I do not get a commission). I just asked to do this so that we could all try different props to see what may work better. Jerry is, however, going to offer a 10% discount on all props purchased directly or ordered. I tried to get him to go 20%, but his markup is only 15% on some new props. Some of them will be used props, and priced accordingly.
The bad news is that if we spin a hub or damage a prop I gotta pay for it, so we gotta be careful.
It'll be fun.

Are you bringing a mirage +? I was holding off on mounting mine and thought I could bring the old michigan for a mythbusters comparison. Plus I`m dying to try it out. I also have to put her back together this weekend. May have to take some vaca time before the show. Just got her back from my 100 hr service after 2 weeks...... I gotta get a shop manual!

Briguy- Care to let me try your 24 counter rotate prop on the 140 Zuke I will be using?

Briguy 04-03-2008 10:57 AM

Re: Long Point April 11-12

Danny,
I can let you borrow my 24" prop. I don't have c/r motors, they both rotate the same way. I also have access to a 20" ss Suzi prop if someone would like to try it.

On an other note, apparently fishing is beginning to "blow up" around there. From what I have been reading in the internet and in the Florida Fishing Weekly, Cobia are just showing up now and White jigs, pinfish or an eel like imitation will most certainly get a bite. Redfish and trout are biting.....some 10-20lb reds being taken in the bay around small creeks. Bait is pretty plentiful with sabiki's or castnet. Jacks in the passes.
AW YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JohnB 04-03-2008 11:23 AM

Re: Long Point April 11-12

Now for the real fishing forecast....

For some reason the cobia are still hanging around, they usually move through pretty fast, and hang up around the cape. If you find big rays, usually in 40-50' you will find cobia. This may be related to the next piece of info.

We have had some cold water move in, and it is slowing the bottom fishing down, a lot. If you get out deep you can avoid some of it, but then your fighting a strong current.

There are some big Mahi to 68 POUND!!! that have been caught out deep too, real deep.

I am supposed to be putting the motor back on my boat Monday, an if she seatrials ok, should be dragging it down there Fri.

Is there a schedule or any other such agenda/organization?

It sounds like there will be a lot of boats, if anyone is looking for a ride out, let me know, right now, I have just 2 in my boat.
