Re: I Need A Shrink !
Sean- Chuck and I have been trading e mails for some time but I've only had the chance to meet him once when we were both fishing near the GG bridge several years ago. We both recognized each others boats and stopped to chat for a bit. Did he get his new Suzuki all dialed in?
I figured I may as well post something since it's been several weeks. I've been waiting on stuff and depression sets in when promises are made and not kept. My fuel tanks are being held hostage by the welder. I dropped them off two and a half months ago and they are still not ready despite my lighting a fire under his a$$. The window gasket material that was supposed to be over nighted is still not here and it's been 3 weeks since I ordered it. I hate depending on other people to do things for me but you cant do everything your self. Sea cock and thru hull pick up are installed http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/404.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/407.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/408.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/409.JPG The hull is nearly 7/8 inch thick back here http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/405.JPG These plastic inserts fit into the tops of the rocket launchers http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/412.JPG Most of the work I've accomplished over the past two weeks has been on the trailer. The trailer for this boat was in fairly good shape but it needed some regular maintenance. I brought it to my mechanic and had him do it up for me. New receiver, master cylinder, brake lines, and brakes. After that I was able to get it home and get going on it. The bunks were in bad shape so I replaced those. Pressure treated 2x6 with new carpet. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/410.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/411.JPG I put the trailer on jacks and took a wire wheel and orbital sander to the whole thing. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/416.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/417.JPG http://www.casvm.com/photos/25%232internet/418.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/419.JPG The two trailer guides in the back of the trailer were rusted out and one was broken. This was because holes were drilled in these for padding but no drain holes were in place so water just filled the pipes and they rusted out. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/415.JPG My neighbor is retired and he can weld so I had him make some new rear guides. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/424.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/425.JPG New paint. This is Kelly Moore dura poxy. $30 per gallon which almost free when you calculate everything you spend on one of these boat restorations. It's not actually and epoxy based paint. It's water based but they told me it gets hard like an epoxy hence the name. epoxy based products are not UV stable and will yellow over time. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/420.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/421.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/422.JPG The bunks are fastened with galvanized bolts that are counter sunk into the 2x6. I cut the carpet so I could do this. The other option was to simply use lag screws from the bottom up but those will work loose over time. I did not want to have to worry about that. After everything was tightened down I covered the tops of the bolt heads with boat life caulk and then re stapled the carpet back in place. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/423.JPG Here is the trailer 99% complete. New wiring, lights, winch, rollers and few other goodies that I cant remember right now. I still have to get some new tires for it. After that I can put the boat back on the trailer and hopefully I'll get my second wind. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/426.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/427.JPG Our faithful cat Stinker with his best friend. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/428.JPG strick |

Re: I Need A Shrink !
Looks like you reaped the bounty on that trip. Were do you launch out of? I keep getting invited to go to Albion for snails. Some friends of ours camp there every year.

Re: I Need A Shrink !
Call me stupid or naive, but those snails look like something out of Capt. Nemo's Lab or maybe the genetics labs of some of the pharmaceutical genetic mutation labs!
Just how BIG are those things? |
Re: I Need A Shrink !
Hey Strick,
There is a picture of your hull that looks like it is not the normal longitudinal panel of the VDR hull, but rather a more conventional chine configuration. Do you have any comment. Was this peculiar to the 25' hull version. I am trying to copy the picture I am talking about below. Well, I can't seem to paste it in here, so I'll go back and identify the shot is my another posting here in a minute. |
Re: I Need A Shrink !
The pictures I am referring to are the 10th, 11th and 12th in your 5/22/10 posting showing your painting of the hull and boot stripe.

Yep abalone...big snails. Minimum size is 7", nice is 8, big is nine, 10 is trophy.
We launched out of Noyo, but we go to ALbion a lot, its close to us. |
Re: I Need A Shrink !
The steps start out the same as you would see on the 20 and 23 hulls however as they near the bow the last couple feet of the steps take on a reverse chine before they fade out. All the 25's have this same configuration.

Re: I Need A Shrink !
Strick,
What is that pump on the thru hull? Will you use the same fitting to feed a washdown or is that a washdown/baitwell pump? OK now load that 'grey lady' up and get us an outside picture! Nice work....heres to getting your parts soon :D |
Re: I Need A Shrink !

I believe it's a Rule. It has a second port for the addition of a nipple fitting that goes to the washdown pump. It just allows water to get to the washdown pump. Just like the Kodiak bait pumps. Has the fishing been any good over there? strick |
Re: I Need A Shrink !
Well I am going to copy that idea now too  You plan on hooking up a shurflo (or similar) pump to that extra nurple? Our June fishing has been ok ;)

Re: I Need A Shrink !
MAN THAT IS AMAZING ALL THE WORK YOU HAVE DONE. IT LOOKS UNBELIEVABLE. GOOD LUCK WITH IT....
I COULD ONLY IMAGINE WHAT A MACHINE IT WOULD LOOK LIKE AND HANDLE WITH A BRACKET AND TWIN FOUR STROKES.....MAYBE WE COULD START A COLLECTION... GOOD LUCK CANT WAIT TO SEE IT IN THE WATER AND ALL FINISHED... |
Re: I Need A Shrink !
SHaaaZammm!
Its a preasure and plivelage to see your work if only in pictures. Looks fantastic, Strick! Maybe I'll sneak away for the Bridge School benefit this year and meander to the delta... |
Re: I Need A Shrink !
Damn...that is REALLY coming together. Outstanding.

Fuel tanks are finally finished http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/438.JPG I keep telling myself it's all fun stuff from here. Hopefully we will be able to get the engine installed within the next couple weeks. There are 50 million little things still to do. It's funny how sometimes one little thing can eat up 2 hours of the day. strick |
Re: I Need A Shrink !
Beautiful work, I love the subtlety of the color combination and the polished stainless rubrail is the icing. This will be a very pretty boat when finished. Only constructive comment I have is I think some light blue-green tint to the windshield glass would be cool. I've seen a Silverhawk cuddy and a restored Chris Craft Commander that had this & it looked very cool. Keep up the good work!

Beautiful work, strick. She's really coming together. Can't wait to see the seat boxes installed. BTW, what's the spec on the windshield glass? Thickness? Tempered or laminated?

Re: I Need A Shrink !
I got a little bit of work accomplished this past weekend. There is a lot of teak in this boat and I have a new appreciation for this 37 year old wood. How it can withstand the elements for so long and still look great after all these years.
http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/451.JPG We got the engine test fit. since I raised the manifolds now have to cut the Y that comes off the out drive and put a 90 degree adapter in place. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/452.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/453.JPG Two access hatches installed in the transom http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/454.JPG There are two areas in the helm that needed to be filled in with fiberglass panels so I laid up a small sheet of glass and cut out the pieces to fit and then cabosiled them in place. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/455.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/456.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/457.JPG Duratec high gloss added to the gel coat http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/458.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/459.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/460.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/461.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/462.JPG Teak trim will cover the seam http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/463.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/464.JPG strick |
Re: I Need A Shrink !
Wow....shouldnt be long now. That motor came out great!

Re: I Need A Shrink !
Teak looks great. How did you freshen it up? I need to do the same.

Re: I Need A Shrink !
strick,
Nice work! I like your idea for the two panels where the plywood bulkhead was exposed. I'd like to place an order for a pair for mine. :D I think it was a very good idea to add riser extensions to your motor. It sits pretty deep in that deep vee hull. I don't know the spec for Volvo, but Mercruiser wants the top of the riser elbow a minimum of 13" above static water line with the boat fully loaded and you need at least 3" riser extensions to get there. Cetol is the best for wearability. Easy to touch up too if need be.

Re: I Need A Shrink !
Yesterday was the first whole day I've had to work on the boat for several weeks. Mostly I've been pecking away at it late into the evenings after work. I have been getting lots of little things done which seem to take forever to do and don't seen like much at the time but they add up fast.
The brass drain tube scuppers in this boat were removed when I got the boat. I thought I could make my own flanging tool and ruined 2 brass tubes in the process so I said the heck with it and ordered a flanging tool from Hamilton marine. Just as important as the flanging tool is a good pipe cutter. I had a fairly new cheapo one from Home depot and ruined another brass tube because the cutting wheel had a slight wiggle to it which made it travel. I borrowed Bills old Rigid pipe cutter and was good to go. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/467.JPG Flanging tool. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/468.JPG Lots of 5200 http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/469.JPG This was an easy job once I had the right tools! http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/470.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/471.JPG Port side http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/472.JPG I started cutting some backing plates for the tower and cleats http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/473.JPG I've been going thru lots of beer and water http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/474.JPG There is going to be two blowers in this boat...one for the engine compartment and one for the fuel tank compartment. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/475.JPG Cutting holes for the fuel and water fills http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/477.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/481.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/482.JPG Please excuse the crappy pictures. When this thing is finished I'm going to take a bunch of high resolution photos and post a link to it. 25 feet of fuel fill hose. I have about 4 feet left over. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/479.JPG This little guy works well for cutting fuel fill line. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/478.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/483.JPG Shots of some of the teak that I have installed so far. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/484.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/485.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/486.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/487.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/488.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/489.JPG hatch for the step down boxes. This will be used for storage. http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/491.JPG forward bulk head and teak anchor locker http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/492.JPG Drain's for the cockpit. The old set up had some holes drilled thru the floor http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/490.JPG There is a fuel tank that goes directly under this. I had 1 1/4" clearance from the top of the tank to the to the bottom of the cockpit sole. So I had to cut off the bard to make these work. What water that ends up here will have to run onto the top of the fuel tank and then into the bilge. Not my best plan ever but that the way it's going to have to be http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/493.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/494.JPG 4200 sealant These are 1 inch drains http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/495.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/496.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/497.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/498.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/499.JPG Mandalay Bay Las Vegas Nev http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/465.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/466.JPG thats 499 photos I've up loaded to my server so far for this project :D strick |

Re: I Need A Shrink !
If you'll anneal the brass tube ends before flanging it's a lot less likely to split. Heat to red with propane torch and immidiately quench in water, repeat, install, then flange end.
I've done many like this on some old Whalers and never had one split. It must be cut to length beforehand. The boat's looking great!!! |
Re: I Need A Shrink !
I've had very good luck with Epifanes. It was rated best for durability by PowerBoat Reports, better than Honey Teak, which was their previous top pick. It also does not darken the wood as much as Honey Teak and is also easily repairable.
|
Re: I Need A Shrink !
Everything is looking great!
Couple of questions: 1) In you restorations you wait to cut thru hull penetrations until after you paint. Is there a benefit by doing that instead of before you paint? 2) How many coats of Epifanes did you use? If multiple coats do you sand between applications? I've bought that product to use but they don't provide instructions. |

BTW, be carefull about using the aggressive 2-part teak cleaners, which soften the soft part of the grain. I sanded my teak cockpit boards with 60 grit to get them smooth because they were pretty "scalloped" in the soft areas from the many years of using aggressive cleaners. Probably would have been easier to have run them thru a planer! :D |
