Re: I Need A Shrink !

Sean- Chuck and I have been trading e mails for some time but I've only had the chance to meet him once when we were both fishing near the GG bridge several years ago. We both recognized each others boats and stopped to chat for a bit. Did he get his new Suzuki all dialed in?

I figured I may as well post something since it's been several weeks. I've been waiting on stuff and depression sets in when promises are made and not kept. My fuel tanks are being held hostage by the welder. I dropped them off two and a half months ago and they are still not ready despite my lighting a fire under his a$$. The window gasket material that was supposed to be over nighted is still not here and it's been 3 weeks since I ordered it. I hate depending on other people to do things for me but you cant do everything your self.

Most of the work I've accomplished over the past two weeks has been on the trailer. The trailer for this boat was in fairly good shape but it needed some regular maintenance. I brought it to my mechanic and had him do it up for me. New receiver, master cylinder, brake lines, and brakes. After that I was able to get it home and get going on it.

The bunks were in bad shape so I replaced those. Pressure treated 2x6 with new carpet.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/410.JPG

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/411.JPG

I put the trailer on jacks and took a wire wheel and orbital sander to the whole thing.

http://www.casvm.com/photos/25%232internet/418.JPG

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/419.JPG

The two trailer guides in the back of the trailer were rusted out and one was broken. This was because holes were drilled in these for padding but no drain holes were in place so water just filled the pipes and they rusted out.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/415.JPG

My neighbor is retired and he can weld so I had him make some new rear guides.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/425.JPG

New paint. This is Kelly Moore dura poxy. $30 per gallon which almost free when you calculate everything you spend on one of these boat restorations. It's not actually and epoxy based paint. It's water based but they told me it gets hard like an epoxy hence the name. epoxy based products are not UV stable and will yellow over time.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/421.JPG

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/422.JPG

The bunks are fastened with galvanized bolts that are counter sunk into the 2x6. I cut the carpet so I could do this. The other option was to simply use lag screws from the bottom up but those will work loose over time. I did not want to have to worry about that. After everything was tightened down I covered the tops of the bolt heads with boat life caulk and then re stapled the carpet back in place.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/25%232internet/423.JPG

Here is the trailer 99% complete. New wiring, lights, winch, rollers and few other goodies that I cant remember right now. I still have to get some new tires for it. After that I can put the boat back on the trailer and hopefully I'll get my second wind.

Hey Strick,

There is a picture of your hull that looks like it is not the normal longitudinal panel of the VDR hull, but rather a more conventional chine configuration. Do you have any comment. Was this peculiar to the 25' hull version. I am trying to copy the picture I am talking about below.

Well, I can't seem to paste it in here, so I'll go back and identify the shot is my another posting here in a minute.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but those snails are abalone, hence the large size.

Yep abalone...big snails. Minimum size is 7", nice is 8, big is nine, 10 is trophy.

We launched out of Noyo, but we go to ALbion a lot, its close to us.

Re: I Need A Shrink !

The steps start out the same as you would see on the 20 and 23 hulls however as they near the bow the last couple feet of the steps take on a reverse chine before they fade out. All the 25's have this same configuration.

What is that pump on the thru hull? Will you use the same fitting to feed a washdown or is that a washdown/baitwell pump?

I believe it's a Rule. It has a second port for the addition of a nipple fitting that goes to the washdown pump. It just allows water to get to the washdown pump. Just like the Kodiak bait pumps. Has the fishing been any good over there?

With the trailer functioning I was finally able to get the boat out of the carport and into the sunlight were I could see what the paint job looked like. All the hard work is starting to seem worth it as the boat comes together. I'm still waiting on one window panel and then the windshield will be finished.

Beautiful work, I love the subtlety of the color combination and the polished stainless rubrail is the icing. This will be a very pretty boat when finished. Only constructive comment I have is I think some light blue-green tint to the windshield glass would be cool. I've seen a Silverhawk cuddy and a restored Chris Craft Commander that had this & it looked very cool. Keep up the good work!

I remember seeing that black silverhawk and the green tinted glass did look nice. I'll look into it when I pick up the last window pane this week. It's hard to see but they already have a slight green tint to them already. The two cabin windows have a smoke tint. Thanks for the nice comments.

I got a little bit of work accomplished this past weekend. There is a lot of teak in this boat and I have a new appreciation for this 37 year old wood. How it can withstand the elements for so long and still look great after all these years.

We got the engine test fit. since I raised the manifolds now have to cut the Y that comes off the out drive and put a 90 degree adapter in place.

strick,
Nice work! I like your idea for the two panels where the plywood bulkhead was exposed. I'd like to place an order for a pair for mine. :D

I think it was a very good idea to add riser extensions to your motor. It sits pretty deep in that deep vee hull. I don't know the spec for Volvo, but Mercruiser wants the top of the riser elbow a minimum of 13" above static water line with the boat fully loaded and you need at least 3" riser extensions to get there.

Sorry for the late reply... been out of town for a few days. I sanded it down with 150 grit and then washed with teak cleaner/soap and scrub brush and then 3 coats of Cetol

I dont know much about restoring teak but I wanted a satin finish rather then a gloss and I wanted it to last longer then an oil finish. I like he way it looks. Hope to get cranking again this weekend. A million things to do and not much time.

Yesterday was the first whole day I've had to work on the boat for several weeks. Mostly I've been pecking away at it late into the evenings after work. I have been getting lots of little things done which seem to take forever to do and don't seen like much at the time but they add up fast.

The brass drain tube scuppers in this boat were removed when I got the boat. I thought I could make my own flanging tool and ruined 2 brass tubes in the process so I said the heck with it and ordered a flanging tool from Hamilton marine. Just as important as the flanging tool is a good pipe cutter. I had a fairly new cheapo one from Home depot and ruined another brass tube because the cutting wheel had a slight wiggle to it which made it travel. I borrowed Bills old Rigid pipe cutter and was good to go.

If you'll anneal the brass tube ends before flanging it's a lot less likely to split. Heat to red with propane torch and immidiately quench in water, repeat, install, then flange end.
I've done many like this on some old Whalers and never had one split. It must be cut to length beforehand. The boat's looking great!!!

Re: I Need A Shrink !

I've had very good luck with Epifanes. It was rated best for durability by PowerBoat Reports, better than Honey Teak, which was their previous top pick. It also does not darken the wood as much as Honey Teak and is also easily repairable.

Re: I Need A Shrink !

Everything is looking great!

Couple of questions:

1) In you restorations you wait to cut thru hull penetrations until after you paint. Is there a benefit by doing that instead of before you paint?

2) How many coats of Epifanes did you use? If multiple coats do you sand between applications? I've bought that product to use but they don't provide instructions.

The can of Epifanes I bought had some pretty detailed instructions on it. I used the gloss version but they also make a satin finish. As I remember it said to thin 1st coat 50%, 2nd coat 25% and 3rd coat 10%. I applied 7-8 coats total; between coats I just scuffed the surface with a red 3M pad or wet sanded w/180 grit any areas that weren't real smooth. Did more wet sanding between the first few coats and mostly scuffing between last few coats. I used foam brushes and it turned out well. Did most of it 4 years ago and it's still holding up well, although a few spots need touch up, especially on the door frame, which was done with Honey Teak. I do keep it covered, but the Epifanes is the most durable stuff I've found, and I've tried just about everything over the last 35 years, including Deks Olje No. 1 & 2, and various teak oils. Seems like the teak oils oxidize and turn dark, even if you keep them covered! The varnish is more work up front, but over the long haul it's a lot less work, and I think it looks better.

BTW, be carefull about using the aggressive 2-part teak cleaners, which soften the soft part of the grain. I sanded my teak cockpit boards with 60 grit to get them smooth because they were pretty "scalloped" in the soft areas from the many years of using aggressive cleaners. Probably would have been easier to have run them thru a planer! :D
