Amazing, Terry. I like the parting shot as well. Keep up the good work.

65Bowrider 01-09-2012 06:40 PM

Terry, she's really looking nice.
I like how you have "softened" the lines.
The sheerline is all curves and adding these touches
makes her very classic and classy.
Let me know where you find white oak in south fla.

Brightwork doesn`t like sharp turns anymore than a moonshiner runnin` bias ply tires.

Thanks, for all the kudos. It is the site that helps keep the motivation going.

Dave on the glass grove, I think I will do it the old fashioned way...rabbit like a picture frame, and then adhesive in and trim.

Carla, there is an exotic wood dealer in Alva, FL (near Ft.Myers). He has just about any type of wood you would be looking for.

Sandy you missed your calling, you should be working for Jay writing his one liners...:D

Does he have Honduran Mahogany? That's what I'm thinking for my windshield frame, but it's a little scarce here in Hogtown.

I briefly worked for World Panel Products in a branch opened here in NC a few years back. The home office is out of Riviera Beach off of Australian Ave. I didn"t have a very good experience working for this company, but, they do have alot of hardwoods. They have a website with pricing on it, but, I suggest you shop around because they like their products, ALOT!

Wind Shield...on going saga part 52

After getting the wood frame worked out the way I liked it, the next part was to figure on how to get it to lay flat on the dash and combing.

After a lot of soul searching I decided that the right thing to do was fair in flat spots on the dash and combing. I really did not want to do that, but in the long run it was the only workable solution to make it look like it was meant to be on the boat, and not just an after thought.

Bear with me through the pictures and explanations.

This is what something looks like when trying to put a flat on a curve.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0236.jpg

Also if you look closely you see the old windshield plexi resting spot...

Flatten the top of the combing(it had a soft s curve in it and fill in the plexi groove.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0264.jpg

Add a ton a fairing compound to get a radius going.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0248.jpg

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0263.jpg

Set the windshield on the wet fairing compound to get a base.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0272.jpg

Flat Base

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0286.jpg

Starting to look a lot better.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0292.jpg

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0293.jpg

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0279.jpg

Now I have ordered my White Oak and will make another small mock up of the corner pieces and then finish up the final fairing and hopefully it will look like it was made for the boat.

Fairing ='s put it on and take it off.:D

thehermit 03-02-2012 06:53 PM

Awesome.

I know your planning on this BUT...make sure to get some glass on the fairing compound. That much will surly crack. I made this mistake :(

Cant wait to see this 21 on the water again :)

floorboy 03-03-2012 12:06 AM

The last couple pics look like it will look great, getting there it looks kinda tough but I think you made the right decision.

Thanks for bring that up...I forgot to mention that. I have put in some 10 oz. glass over the fairing compound about half way thru. Most likely I will lay over some 4 0z when the fairing is all done, and then skim coat it one more time. That should keep it from chipping or cracking.

Slick Engineering!

Besides sanding and priming I thought I would share this with you.

Last year (maybe it was 2 years ago ) I bought this old Morse Steering Wheel.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...10323-1628.jpg

As it turns out the taper in the wheel hub was too big. Or the taper on the steering shaft was too small (ying or yang) so the wheel would bottom out and under stress would not turn the out drive.

We are talking 5/8 to 3/4...I tried wrapping some alum shim stock around the spindle to fatten it up, but it really wasn't the right solution.

I called one of my buddies who owns a tool and die back in the rust belt , where they still make stuff, and told him my dilemma. His reply was no sweat just send it up and I will make it work.

Every picture tells a story so here is the story.

Steering spindle and machined part (machined part lower corner)

The Machined part and key

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0351.jpg

How sweet is this

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0349.jpg

The wheel now fits perfect

Nice to have friends in "LOW PLACES"

Junk (Glove) Box

After getting the fairing done and shooting the top cap (again). It is starting to look like something that belongs.

Port

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...CIMG0022-1.jpg

Starboard

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...CIMG0028-1.jpg

Cap

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...CIMG0021-4.jpg

There is only so much sanding priming and fairing a guy can do...before he blanks out.

So my fun project was to fabricate a glove(junk) box . When I first bought the boat the PO just cut the dash and basically tortured the thing. Look close it is not even centered.

Old

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...IMG_2895-2.jpg

So knowing that I would
re-do this some day I filled it and glassed it with new wood.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...CIMG0006-4.jpg

Then made fair and primer

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...IMG_4119-1.jpg

Now a couple of years later I decided how I was going to do the new box.

Pick a size and center :D

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0357.jpg

Make a template to enclose the space

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0360.jpg

Then make a real template

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0364.jpg

Cut out cardboard and see how it looks

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0366.jpg

Make cleats to hold the floor and sides in

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0388.jpg

Use scrap azec used from other projects and check fit

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0390.jpg

Now I have a glove box that matches my bunk covers that I made a while ago in Starboard... Glove box door is in starboard also.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0382.jpg

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0129.jpg

Now that the fun is over and my white oak is in I have to start the final on the windshield.

McGillicuddy 04-11-2012 06:41 PM

Looks good Terry.
Is that an aft access to port quarter storage?
What is you plan for the cuddy. Going back to supporting stanchions or are you gonna close off bulkhead like 3rdDay did?

Oh, the fun is just beginning...

I'm interested to see how you've decided to do your windshield. Are you going with a frame and glazing stop?

Dave

65Bowrider 04-12-2012 05:46 AM

Terry,
Your 21 is coming along so nicely and when finished, will be better than new AND more tuned into your needs.

Your attention to detail is incredible too ... doing such a great job!

Funny you should ask :D The other day I primed the V-Bunk area and put in the support stanchions, to see how they fit (I did some modifying). The only thing I will do is paint them white and keep it stock looking.

Thanks Carla, I can't wait to get it done and show it to the "Original Maker"

Dave Keep your radio dial tuned to this station for updated information as we receive it.

Dave

Before doing anything I asked a friend of mine (snowbird) who lives in Bar Harbor Maine, how his buddy who own Redfren Boats in Up Harbor Maine makes his windshields. The answer was biscuits and epoxy. Since I already had a plate cutter that is how I did mine.

Before doing any cutting...I consulted with Carla and we both decided that the windshield frame needed a little flair to match the sheer line.

Back to the design table.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0393.jpg

Next, was to take the white oak the was 5/4 and get it down to 4/4

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0395.jpg

Rip the pieces and label.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0394.jpg

When biscuit cutting and gluing I like to get something real flat, so I had this old mirror and it worked well.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0421.jpg

Making sure epoxy did not get on every thing taping was a must.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0413.jpg

Before and after gluing I think I used every tool I had to make these things look good.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0417.jpg

Rough shape trial fit.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0403.jpg

Finished shape.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0407.jpg

For mounting I wanted to use a hidden mounting system. So I went with Hanger bolts and I think they will work out great.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0433.jpg

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0435.jpg

A lot of sanding and shaping...however I think the fit is really good.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0436.jpg

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0437.jpg

Parting Shot with all three sections...

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0462.jpg

Need to work on putting the piano hinge in and then this part of the project can be put to sleep until the boat goes into the paint shop...at that time I will finish up the "varnish" part and glass.

strick 05-09-2012 11:35 AM

To take on these kinds of projects you guys already have to be pretty crafty in multiple areas.
That windshield work is great stuff.

Bushwacker 05-09-2012 01:51 PM

Love that precision craftsmanship! Truly beautiful work! Terry, that thing is gonna look awesome! Denny

Looking good, Terry. Looks solid as a rock. Did you decide to go with glass or plastic? I want to see how you've decided to secure the glazing in place.

Dave, I liked your combo of tempered on the side and safety in the front. So I will go that way. Working on the second part.

A Little More

3 Attachment(s)
Well it seems that life always gets in the way...

My plan was to have the boat in the paint shop by June, well family matters prevail (good not bad) and we have to be away for most of June.

So this is all that will be done until we get back...

Deck Floor Primed not sanded out yet (BFD right) :D

Attachment 2088

I have been struggling of what I want to do to keep out of the sun...this is the type of top I would like to make.

Attachment 2089

However I have not even thought how to do something like this. And to be frank this project has to get done, or it will go on for ever.

So before paint I will get one of these and hope that it will do the job for a while.

Attachment 2091

Looks good on Daves boat so why not on a 21...

strick 06-03-2012 08:10 PM

Bimini all the way. Sun or shade in 5 min which ever you choose. Get er done and put some miles on it then in a couple years you can always add the top if you want ... IMHO :)

I like the old boat where the windshilds swung up for airflow.

This is what I would like, however my windshield opens to Port and I want to be able to stand under the top. So with the current set up it will be a Bimini that is hard poled in the rear.

Islandtrader 08-08-2012 09:48 AM

Little Steps

Well since I got back from our trip up north the heat index here has been over 105 for the entire month of July and today is 109. With that the chances of getting the boat painted have been moved back til October.

So just been doing the little stuff so when the boat is painted it can be assembled and ready for cruising.

A little more done on the windshield, made all the radius's for the corners and sanded them out...

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0639.jpg

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0643.jpg

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0642.jpg

What know one tells you when you start one of these projects is that if you change something it has CONSEQUENCES and that means more thinking (work) and fabricating.

Different windshield means old hatch hardware does not work.

This is a picture of the original hardware of the hatch opening from Gillies boat...

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/febeeaeg.jpg

A nice idea for the old windshield...however both Gillie and I decided it was a little clunky and I didn't have the old stuff so fast forward.

I wanted to remove the hatch when we are anchored for the day so the deck would be clear.

Stop bar and tie downs.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0658.jpg

Glide rails made out of some scrap starboard

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0659.jpg

Easy latch down

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0657.jpg

In the front added alignment pin to keep hatch in place when cruising.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0660.jpg

Windshield fits nicely

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0662.jpg

Next on the agenda should be routing out the windshield channels, and talking to blue heron on windshield supports.

Heading out for 3weeks (need some cool weather relief).

Bushwacker 08-08-2012 12:00 PM

Nice work Terry, as usual! Those hatch latches are pretty neat!

One feature Bob liked about that hatch on his 21 was that you could raise the front of it (when in closed position, I believe) so that it would act as an air scoop, sort of like the hatch on a Seafari! Will you be able to do that with yours? That's a good thing when you're anchored out overnight in July in the Bahamas when the air temps only cool down to about 80F! Gillie, can you do that with the hatch on your 21? Denny

Thanks,

Funny thing on those latches. While racking my brain on what to do, a friend said why don't you use the rubber tie downs that are on the high end coolers?

So I did some G'ing and found them and the parts list...except since they are boat related ($$$$) they wanted $35.00 for each latch. No way

So I thought I have seen these before somewhere  hood tie downs on race cars/and or jeeps. Went to a race catalog and found them for $8.00 each and the metal parts are high grade stainless...a real bit.h to drill.
