Re: Here We Go Again

Things have been going turtle speed on this little boat. The kids are on summer break so I've been trying to spend some quality time with them taking them places and doing things together on the weekends.

Early Sunday morning while everyone was still asleep I managed to shoot some awlgrip primer on the hull. I sprayed the bottom, sides and top cap. The inside of the hull is not ready for primer yet. This was a very light coat of primer so it will help me to see the blemishes that still need to be faired and sanded.

Fresh Awlgrip primer:

Quick fair and block sanded with 220:

The bottom is almost ready for paint however the top sides still have a bit more fairing and sanding left to do. Hopefully I'll get to it this week.

I picked up a gantry crane from Harbor freight the other day and decided to try it out. My brother helped me set it up this past weekend. He works for a crane company and builds these things on a much larger scale out in the field. We modified it slightly making it 4 inches wider so I will be able to fit the boat trailer under it.

Thanks Brian. Rhett, the server was down for about 24 hours and I don't know why but I guess they got it figured out.

Still trying to get power to the shop. My friend loaned me his trencher a couple weeks ago. There are two long runs with a junction box connecting the two. The first run starts at the corner of the fence closest the house were I have a junction box that feeds power to the irrigation control system.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6908.JPG

It makes a hard right and beelines for the opposite side of the property to another junction box.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6909.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6910.JPG

From there it turns strait for the shop

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6911.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6912.JPG

The wire is gonna cost a small fortune just to get to the shop.

Now for the boat:

More fairing and block sanding. Another coat of Awlgrip 545 and guide coat applied;

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6915.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6920.JPG

The bottom is getting closer to paint

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6919.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6934.JPG

Another block sanding and washed off with water. At this point it seems like Never Never Land

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6921.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6922.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6925.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6926.JPG

The glorious day finally arrived when I got to shoot a little primer on the inside of the hull

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6928.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6930.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6931.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6932.JPG

There are lots of little pinholes in the panels. I think we may have got a little too aggressive in our earlier sanding and sanded thru the primer in a few spots.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6947.JPG

Never fear. We have System 3 Quick fair.

I should have primed the transom cap when I made the part because that baby was loaded with pin holes

Stay tuned for next weeks episode entitled "More fairing and sanding"

Those dad gum pin holes have a bad habit of coming back :(
I know what you are up against......

BTW, The 140 ft. run from my house to the barn would have been over a $1800. with the 4-1/0 copper wires I ran to the service. We were able to salvage enough to do the job when the old warehouse came down. Good luck and keep up the good work.

Oh yeah, I saw that Harbor had them on sale for I think was
$560, not a bad price if that is the one.

Can you run the service wiring in alum Chuck?

I don't have a clue what Ca. codes would be, but I do know there are a bunch of wacko's out there.

How many coat's of 545 did you start with? Did you thin it?
Awlgrip calls for T0006 thinner to reduce it. don't waste your money and don't thin it. It will spray fine. I start with 4 coats.

That is an amazing job you have going on there.Im a newbe on all this with fiberglass but have some skills and would like to do a little remodelation to my 19 foot bow rider SC and turn it to a center console and you have inspired me after lurking for a while around your thread and learning a bit or two.I have a couple of questions and if its possible for you or the other members of the site to clear some doubts I have.First one is that I saw on the thread that the core on the covers or doors for the fish box and the other compartments were cut into small squares and I dont understand the reason for this isnt it supose to be stronger if the core is in one piece? The other question is if a fiberglass bracket is strong enough to hold a big outboard? reason for asking this question is because I have a friend that has a boat with two 150 rudes on an alluminum bracket and after some years of rough seas and punishment the bracket gave off and one of the engines fell in the water  so Im thinking, an alluminum bracket is suposed to be stronger than glass, isnt it? :DIll apressiate any coment from you guys and this site is great you people do some great jobs, I have to take my hat off and give my respects. Thanks again.

Re: Here We Go Again

Ken- you are right about the pin holes.... very irritating..... you fill one and five more show up for the funeral. Are you talking about the gantry crane at harbor freight for $560? That sounds about right I got it on sale last month for $539. Very well built it seems.

Bobby- I'll check on the aluminum tomorrow. I kinda doubt it though. What I did with the primer was shoot a light coat on first so I could see the areas that needed to sanded more or built up more. After the fairing and sanding I shot another heavier coat on and then sanded and faired a little more. The outside of the boat is getting close to being straight. what I will probably do is put two more heavy coats on it next before I paint. I have a question for you as I was going to e-mail you but I'll bring it up now. I was reading the awlgrip manual and they talk about the last coat of primer and painting over it without sanding it first. I cant remember what I did last time but I was under the impression that the primer should be sanded with 220 prior to paint? yes I did thin it and you are right in that it really don't need to be thinned much if any at all. I've been having some difficulty with my two compressors. The little one I have cant keep up the with the spray gun so it drops pressure while spraying. I have cords strung out from the house to the shop and the voltage drop wont allow me to run the bigger compressor. I'll have to figure something out before I try to paint.

Rhett- I got the wire covered but we need to go fishing soon before all the albacore head up north!

tito- welcome to the site and thanks. Read back thru the project for the answer as to the squares. The topic was discussed already. As for the bracket a properly built fiberglass bracket will be as strong or stronger then the aluminum. There are no welds to break.

Never read that anywhere about 545 and the not sanding. It needs to be sanded. The finish sanding before painting is hand blocked with 400gt or DA with 220gt.

Don't make a mistake the 1st time I asked and was VERY clear as to the fact that I was "Hand Blocking" the hull and said it several times.

The guy told me 220gt and then when everything was done he said "Oh I thought you were DAing it?" :( Aggg!

It will have micro scratches showing in the paint if you do. A DA erases it's own scratches.

tito To add to what Chuck said about the alum bracket. If the boat sat in the water and had bottom paint. It must be treated with a bottom paint that is designed for a alum boat. To not do this can be very BAD. It will eat the alum,as the bottom coat has copper in it.

Jumping waves in a boat may look cool in pix's but it sure does put extreme stress and strain on things.

A alum bracket should not crack, but there are plenty of subject's that have.

One year anniversary today. How bout a little fireworks.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/Fireworks.jpg

Not much to report on the boat except more of the same stuff.... FARING AND SANDING. I managed to get the boat sanded and shot two good coats of primer on her inside and out over the last couple weeks. The fairing has consisted of mostly filling little blemishes and pin holes. I want the boat to look good when it's finished so I've been taking my time looking at the boat in all light conditions and adding fairing compound where needed. I'm sure some blemishes will get by me but hopefully you will have to look hard to find them.

Here are a few more pics:

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6954.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6980.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6987.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6989.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6988.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6960.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6991.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6969.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6970.JPG

The wire for the shop came in. Thanks goes to Bobby and Jeremy you saved me $$$ by going to aluminum and buying it from Herning supply. The other place was trying to rip me off they wanted $1700 for 1300 feet of #1 aluminum. Herning sold me 430 feet of triplex (three wires wrapped around) for $570. This is 1-0 aluminum so I ended up getting bigger wire for less money.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN6977.JPG

There were only a few more places that needed to be filled with fairing compound.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7057.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7058.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7059.JPG

These areas will be spot sanded, primed and sanded again along with the rest of the boat. I have to do some cut outs for hardware and then it's time for some paint.

Chuck I see you have some blobs in very small areas as your filling stuff.

Go get you a box of single edge razor blades.[100 count box] Use the razor blade as as a spreader. when done chuck it in the trash.
This will keep from having filler spread all over where you don't want it and concentrate it where you do.

You will find it as a time saver. :)

Re: Here We Go Again

Time for an up date. I've managed to get a little done on the boat over the last couple weeks. I had a couple quarts
of awlgrip left over from my 23 project so I decided to go ahead and paint with that rather then Imron. This boat
will sit on a trailer most of it's life. The bottom is painted with a 50/50 combo Mattahorn white and Off white.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7061.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7062.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7065.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7066.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7073.JPG

I got a nice hatch from TH marine. Cast aluminum and the lid comes completely off for easy access to the bilge were the seacock and one of the bilge pumps will be.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7075.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7077.JPG

Cut outs for deck hardware:

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7080.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7078.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7079.JPG

Some of the hardware that will be going on the boat. The Accon LED bow light is really slick:

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7128.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7130.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7125.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7126.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7127.JPG

I used the gantry crane to slide the blocks and supports around so I could finish painting the bottom of the boat:

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7085.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7083.JPG

I was able to get the boat on the trailer by myself using the gantry crane:

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7086.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7087.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7088.JPG

It fits in the shop nicely:

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7091.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7092.JPG

My son caught this 13 pound catfish in the canal behind our house the other day:

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7108.JPG

He caught it plugging for stripers using a 1/2 ounce rattle trap on a ultralight pole with 4 pound test. Dad had to help him a little. :D

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7111.JPG

since I was able to get the boat in the shop I felt like I was on a roll so I decided to finish painting the outside
of the boat. The 545 awlgrip primer was sanded with 220 using a DA sander and hand blocked as well.

Masking it off:

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7096.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7097.JPG

tack coat applied:

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7099.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7098.JPG

Successive coats applied:

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7103.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7104.JPG

As you can see I was painting late in the day. Not a good idea. The bugs were not a problem but visibility was. I
could not use too many lights or my breaker would kick off because of the voltage drop with all my cords strung out from the house. At any rate I got it painted.

After Looking at the paint job in the sunlight the next day I decided that I could not live with the way it looked.

There were some areas that needed to be sanded more. Everything was nice and smooth however some of the areas were I added filler were too high and needed to be sanded down more. So I broke out the sander once again.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7112.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7114.JPG

Then Re-sanded the entire boat and primed the areas that needed it:

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7115.JPG http://www.casdvm.com/photos/20sf/DSCN7117.JPG

Then back in the shop for re-painting:

It looks better now. Something I think I can live with.

Strick, nice work ! I think I like the Fighting Lady Yellow, but I think I'll be doing Ice blue for my 20...which is nearing its paint stage.

I applied some 545 today and noticed that it looks like I can see the body work underneath. The thing is, when I run my hand around the area, it feels smooth, when I apply a ruler its fair, but it looks like the body work is coming through the primer. In your first primer picture you had a similar mark through the primer...do you think more coats will cover it up ? Other then that the my hull is super smooth, only the top cap somewhat concerns me.

Alex

strick 09-10-2007 01:54 AM

Re: Here We Go Again

Alex- If you are going to paint with the ice blue you should use white 545 because it will cover better. Dark primer for dark colors and light primer for light colors. Took me forever to cover the gray with the yellow.

As for the bleed through, I think the more primer you lay down the better off you will be however you may have to do more sanding as well over these areas.

My hull was a mess from all the blisters and even though I've spent countless hours sanding and fairing and priming there are still areas that could look better. There are even areas were you can see the roven woving bleed through if you look hard enough. The roven bleed through was there originally from the factory... you could see it through the white gel coat. I could have spent another two months on this hull shooting it with high build primer etc... but like you said the fall run is coming soon and after all these are fishing boats not Lake Tahoe Wooden CrisCrafts :D

GradySailfish 09-10-2007 10:14 AM

Re: Here We Go Again

Thanks for the input Strick. I did the grey initially because it covers better then white and also shows more imperfections then white. The plan was to prime in grey first, and when all the imperfections are done, put some white primer just before the top coat.

I agree though, you can only do so much. You had many blisters and I had many many stress cracks.

I'll see what more primer does. Hopefully it will cover those areas, because they certainly feel smooth and a ruler shows it to be even.

I like the Fighting lady yellow. I did my previous 16 sport craft project in that color scheme.

This restoration project is truly a work of art. So different from the quick and inept work seen so often in boatyards. The divergent posts really make me miss my school days in northern cal - 2 hours from the mountains and trout - two hours from the ocean - big catfish in the canal.

Strick,

I love the 140 Suzuki, 400 hrs without a hiccup. My boat isn't in the same league as yours, it's alittle on the rough side, but fully functional. I've been chipping away at my restoration with fishing/diving/family outtings mixed in. I am thinking in a year or two to hunt down a 23cc hull and do it your way. Then I can go to Seacraft heaven! ;)

Looking forward to your next progress report!

Phenomenal work Strick! I don't want to look at your thread too often though, because it reminds me of how much work I have left to do on mine. Do you mind if I ask what equipment you used to paint?

Re: Here We Go Again

I borrowed Bigshrimpins Harbor Freight spray gun for the awlgrip. I have a Husky which is not worth a darn that I used to spray the first couple coats of primer originally. The orifice is too small on the Husky. I have a 30 gal compressor and kept the pressure at about 70psi which seems to work for me. There is a water separator in line between the compressor and the spray gun. You need a good respirator when spraying Awlgrip. A hood, tyvec suite, and goggles as well. Here is the last three heavy coats of primer before the final sanding:

Tomorrow I'll be spraying the interior walls.

Looking totally great Strick...

Are you using a cartridge respirator with organic vapor cartridges....or a respirator with forced air supply???
