Mercury outboard

I guess this is as good as anywhere to post this question. It has been a while since I actually worked on outboards and they have changed tremendously, so I am in deep without high boots if ya know what I mean.

I can't seem to get my motor to spin over(2001 200 EFI). Fresh battery, my connections look and feel tight. I don't have the key so I am going directly to starter, the starter spins, the gear slides up to the flywheel but will not engage it(it just comes back down and spins). I can turn the motor over by hand. What is wrong???

Sounds like the armature on the starter is bad.

decided a scope is a little easier on my psyche.

Pogden,

you're better of getting a new starter or economize with a re-build for aprox $250. Hey it sounds like you're a Jet's fan that hates So.Fla. I guess it's just jealousy.....

The Jets are alright, just because I still like Ole Joe, I love and miss South Fla. I was born in Miami and grew up fishing the Ten Thousand Islands. Now they have great Cuban food..roast pork and black beans with some plantains on the side, a little espresso

Its the little thingy mabob that forces the gear up when the motor spins. Mine does it too sometimes. West Marine sells rebuilt ones. Isn't the motor still under warrantee?
As for the Jets thing....forget it....I'll wait till Sunday October 3rd, 4:15pm at Pro Palyer Stadium before I make any comments. <font color="orange"> GO FINS!!!!!

No, I bought it used, damn thing looks brand new, supposedly less than 40 hrs. but it has been sitting for two years. Maybe a little WD-40--electrical spray would help.

Re: Mercury outboard

pogden,
The armature is the wire in the core of the electric motor and the bedix is what engages the starter gear. There may be a problem with the starter or your engine might be locked up. If you take out the plugs you should be able to roll it. Hopefully the starter is bad. Good luck
