Massachusetts tuna
My friends from work and I pushed off the docks in Boston at 4:00 am and steamed east about 25 miles to Stellwagen. When we arrived at 5:15ish...there was only 4 boats around, but others arrived quickly and it became a trolling merry go around. After about 2 hours, a tuna hits the black squid bar and my buddy Mike grabs the rod. After a short fight....I gaffed her in the head (yeah!), bled her, gutted her and threw her in the fish locker. We trolled around for another hour or so, but no luck. At around 8:40, we pulled up the lines and hoofed it back to port at Mach 6, and arrived at the docks at 9:30am....just in time for work. We were soaking wet and tired, but it was definitely worth it. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1.../Grouptuna.jpg CSICKNICK was also out there. I was talking to him on the VHF and he caught one too. |

Re: Massachusetts tuna
OUZO-
Nice fish! Did you catch it on a green machine or a squid bar?? Nothing like having fresh sushi at 9:00 am, huh? ScottM- Glad you liked the loin. I ate mine last night. After a couple of days in teh fridge it was so tender. I dipped it in soy sauce, then rolled it in sesame seeds, and then seared it on each side for a minute. Throw on some wasabi and serve. CHANCE- The first thing I do is hold the fish upside down and slit the throat. Then I make a cut in the tail. Next, I pierce the head (trying to get to the spinal cord) just above the eyes....then I make a small 8 inch incision just forward of the anal fin, and start removing the guts, heart, etc. Once that is done, I stuff the cavity with ice.....and lay it on a bed of ice. I did this immediately after catching it I have a pdf. file from the South Pacific fisherman's cooperative? that illustrates several suggested ways to gut & preserve a southern pacific bluefin tuna. I am sure everyone has their own methods, but this was good reading for me. I will see if I can dig it up and will post it. |
