Finally Started on 23 Inboard
 

Here are some pics of the hull of my 79 inboard w/ decks and transom removed. I intended to get started 2 years ago, but contrary to my previous posts, I decided to wait until I had the funds to do it all at one time. A professional will be doing the transom/deck replacement, painting, and repower. I got it to where it is now and will be doing the console, some other fiberglass modifications, wiring, and rigging.

If you get a chance, give some more details. What are your plans for power?

The power is a 240 4 cyl Yanmar diesel. As for other details its the usual list plus a few other things I wanted to do. The deck will be raised with oversize scuppers, paint entire boat, new tanks, modifications to the console, livewell in transom, new T-top, etc. I'm actually moving the engine and console forward a little over foot to make more room in the aft cockpit area.

Your off to a great start.. who's doing the repower work? Down Jersey? Holtz's I can't wait to see the numbers with the Yanmar..

Moving the console forward! Modi and I have looked into that a bit. An extra foot at the stern would be awesome. I'm very interested to see this. Any ball park numbers for the yanmar? cruise, peak, GPH?

awesome!!! what tranny are you using? how far are you from NYC? i would love to come and check it out since i am doing something similar. just cruious but what does a 240 yanmar cost these days?

how rotted was the deck when u pulled it? are you going to recore the transom with wood or something else?

A foot will make a huge difference. I think the outboards have the console positioned right at the floor hatch which is what I'm shooting for.

The estimated numbers are 30 mph @ 2,850 cruise burning 9 gph and 36 mph top end. Don't know what prop size yet. My old carburated Crusader 454 cruised around 27 mph at 3,100 burning about 24 gph turning a 17x17 prop. The top end was about the same. We'll see but at worst it will increase my range by more than 2 1/2 times.

Tran is a ZF63 1.5/1. 240 Yanmar is just over $20K w/ gear and instrument panel. Which is really cool by the way, all one unit, just plug it in. It's going to look nice in the console with the GPS and Radar over top of it.

The decks were soft. I don't know how rotted as I just cut through and removed them in sections. If they were anything like my hatches,they were rotted. The transom was wet but not pulp. The inner layer came out easy, the outer layer I scored with a circular saw then it was hammer, chisel, and beer time. Marine plywood and epoxy will be used for the decks and transom.

I live just southeast of Philadelphia around exit 3 of the NJTP. Not much to see now. The boat is going to the boat yard on Feb 1. If you want any specific pictures while I have it apart let me know.
