Nice Gag JohnB, were you in the Gulf? We were out on a couple reefs last weekend and the AJ's were tearing it up before you could get to the bottom. Managed a couple keeper red's but not as nice as that Gag. Water is still 67-68, think we have a few more weeks before they move out. Hope it's as flat this weekend as last.

Re: enough already !!!!

TarponTom,
We were out in the Atlantic (my stomping grounds out of Port Canaveral).
I have made 5 trips to the gulf this year, caught a ton of grouper, but had to throw 95% of them back. I can't get a legal fish over there to save my life. Most of the ones we catch in the Atlantic are legal (very legal). That day we had 8 AJ's to 68 pounds on the boat before we finally were able to shake them. We caught 3 flounder to 7 pounds in 130 feet that day too.
It's been a strange year. Caught flounder, snook and redfish off from offshore wrecks. Had some monster grouper too.

John

A 30lb AJ nearly wore me and my penn 12lt international out! How the heck did you get a 68 pound AJ boatside????

Re: enough already !!!!

Briguy,
The one I want to see is the record 142 pounder.....
We hook them while trying for snappers and grouper in 240-280 foot of water off from some of the bigger wrecks.
We use Penn 6/O reels loaded with 100# powerpro using 14/O circle hooks. Once you hook one (bigger than 50 pounds), you better get that rod in a rod holder or fighting chair unless you want to go in the water after him. Take a vise grip and tighten the drag all the way down (better do that ahead of time). Then have someone start the boat up and get a little distance between the fish and the wreck. Then sit straddle style on the gunnel, and wrench him up. After about 30 min, rebait, and do it again. Most guest on my boat are done catching AJ's after the 2nd fish. Too bad they don't taste as good as they fight. Most people that keep them either smoke or fry them.
