Fish boxes in transom

Continued from Steve’s thread on "Work bench"...

What do you guys use the two boxes for mounted in the corners of the transom on the 23's.

Anyone changed or modified them for a different purpose/use??

Thanks
Scott

Hey Scott, Good quetion and I would like to see others answers as well!!! On mine the starboard one is where I keep most of my lead and not much else. Port one I keep cast net, detergent for washing down boat, and other assorted "Junk". My thoughts this year were to put one of those coil up hoses and rigging up a saltwater washdown through it, but that will have to wait for the time being. Craig

Re: Fish boxes in transom

Hey Scott, I use mine the same as Craig, mainly for storage. Port side, I keep a spare gallon of oil, funnel, absorbant, small bucket, and hose for washdown pump. Starboard houses my hydraulic pump for my trim tabs and my water/fuel separator. My stereo speakers are also mounted to the front of each box. The '87 my dad owned had deep removable trays that dropped into the boxes. Mine unfortunately does not have these. I liked them b/c they made good places to keep bait, rigged trolling lures, etc.

I was thinking about cutting the whole deck and having a drop in cooler like the big Hatteras boats. Right now they are a little small to store much but junk.
Craig thats a good idea on the washdown though.

Thanks guys for the response....
I know somewhere out there someone has done something really useful with those boxes and I'm bound to find it..

I have much the same stuff in my boxes...including wet dock lines but Craig I do like that idea about the hydrocoil hose....I think thats what its called..Good idea just wish some of their dedicated mounting systems were a little cheaper....

Anyone else ….. other ideas??

Scott:

I do apologize for not telling you
the hull truth before about those storage
boxes in the stern. But my wife was looking
over my shoulder before. And didn't want her
to find out. So here is my little secret. I keep my girlie magazines in those.

SORRY- a little humor is good for the soul.

EVERYONE NEEDS A JUNK DRAW AND THEY ARE MINE. BUT WHEN I
RE DID THE TRANSOM I DID CHANGE THE DRAIN FROM THROUGH THE TRANSOM TO THE SIDES OF THE HULL. I DIDN’T WANT MORE HOLES IN A WOOD TRANSOM. I FILLED IN THE DRAIN AND DRILLED NEW DRAINS HOLES THROUGH THE CENTER OF THE BOTTOM.

Re: Fish boxes in transom

Steve.....now I get it....thats why you caulked them shut.....so the “ladies” dont get wet

Fellow-Ship....Thats what I'm going to do ... If I dont figure out something else to do with them..As it is the thru hull drains in those boxes are 1/2" above the floor of the box ...so there is always water in them..

Re: Fish boxes in transom

Hi Steve

Thank you for the suggestion....but ..... I have been on the Silverhawk and while the boxes may have been designed differently (they are longer vs deeper) they still dont do a whole lot for me

I may try to insulate them and use them for small Ice boxes (insulating them should be lots of fun!!) or like miles said rig the washdown thru the box.

Re: Fish boxes in transom

I use mine for storage, I put my lead in one and plan on keeping a coiled hose in their too, once I add the washdown. The other is for cut bait when I'm chunkin, or eels when I'm eelin.Take a few bunkers off the Ice, flip the top, cut em up on the backside of the top and throw the chunks in there. It's a real convenient place to keep the chunks and the knife especially when you end up playing mate for your guests esp. kids. When it's time to move and start the drift over, you don't have to worry about a board or stuff flying around. It works for me, just remember to clean it out on the way in!

Re: Fish boxes in transom

You guys are going to make me a believer yet!!

Hi Billybob.....

I think you have something there...with the "bait center" ... I like that idea alot esp. for chunking.... attach a cutting board/Starboard on the backside of the hatch.... instant bait center...and everything washes directly overboard instead of into the cockpit..

Anyone tried to insulate these boxes??

Re: Fish boxes in transom

Don't know about the rest of you but mine came insulated? Not very much but there is at least 3/4" thick foam looking stuff.

Capt. Skip

I’m jealous .... mine do not have insulation ..at least not in my ownership....Oh Well!!

Off subject....

Steve....They came out reallllly nice....Even the guys at the tackle shop where I get all my stuff were amazed.....
I've been wrapping for over 20 years now..I learned in a tackle shop I use to work at...Got this big Idea that I could save money building my own stuff......Boy was that dumb idea!!

Looking to build some 30's,found a Lamiglas blank I liked ....come to find out they discontinued the blank several years ago. Contacted Lami to see if they had any laying around...they said not..So I'm trying to find replacement

Where do you guys buy your rod building stuff?

Why don't you give Leonard C a shout. They have those same boxes in the new silverhawk. Maybe
they have something new or better use.

DO you think Jason would put in a off subject
forum space for things like this. OH HI JASON
how was your mom's b-day. happy birth day mom.

Steve
Looks like you gave Merrick Tackle 4 stars ... I thought they only sold wholesale??? I will try to throw up some pics later....

As far as your other questions Hmmmm...Thats really Jasons call....I dont mind talking about these little side issues on this thread...but then again I started the thread.

Jason....First and foremost do you even want to go there...is more work from your point of view..
Second...(IMO)I think it would really need to be watched that the subject doesnt stray from SeaCraft too much (which I think it could)....We do have a great general boating forum in the HULL TRUTH (although some of the posts do get out of hand some times )...and I dont think we want to go too far into general topics...thus loosing site of the purpose of this website

While it would be neater to isolate such topics I think, personally, we may want to just throw those topics up in a thread (like the rod question)...If it distracts from the main topic of that thread too much then a separate thread should be dedicated to the new topic.....

Does this make sense....these are just some thoughts .. any one else??

Tell ya what email your email address
and I'll send you some pic's & price's if you want
to know how much things really cost.Just got a email today about a tackle shop got broken into, they stole 30 penn reels. I think I'll place an add in the paper for [wanted penn reels any kind cheep] see if I get any calls.
