Adventures in Canvas
Would you be pissed or what!?!?!
------------------------------------ Posted by a member of Tidalfish.com: Well, I decided to bite the bullet and get a custom-made stamoid storage cover for the boat this year. After comparing the cost of a cover to that of shrink-wrapping for about 6 years (hopefully that's at least the life of this cover), I decided to pull the trigger. Plus it would be nice to keep the dirt, leaves, and other gunk out of the boat – and hopefully lengthen the life of boat. After consulting with some other TF members and getting various recommendations, I decided on Sandpiper Marine in Deale to the do job. I had good recommendations, and their estimates were about in line with others I'd gotten plus their location was close for me. The result, a fine looking and fitting cover: http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...2/faa84d0e.jpg That was the good, now here's the bad. I'd specifically asked for a cover with tie downs to be used instead of snaps installed below the rub rail as they suggested. I had a whole list of reasons why I was not keen on +/- 100 holes in the side of my hull for snaps. So when I picked up the boat, guess how it was held down??? http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...2/faa84d0a.jpg Needless to say I was beyond furious. They just decided to do it anyway with snaps because " we thought it would be better this way" . To make a long story short regarding the dispute; I told them I wanted the snaps out and the hull repaired, they agreed and said pay us the difference after the repairs. So all I'm out is a bunch of headache and hassle. Still, very annoying to say the least. ------------------------------------ That really sucks!!! |

Re: Adventures in Canvas
I wish I was fortunate enough to be the owner of the SeaCraft, but I'm not. I just copied the thread from Tidalfish. What as shame this is as that is one beautiful boat.
If it were mine, I would already have the screw holes filled w/ body parts of the guy who chose to ignore what I said!!!! Don, I'm not worried. You ought to move down here. You could raise your prices by %50 and still snatch all the business from the locals. Re: Adventures in Canvas
Does the term "GOING POSTAL" seem appropriate here or what? After seeing this my next statement would be. "Any further communication should be directed through my lawyer!" No to sound negative but that hull will never be right again. I guarantee looking down the side of the boat will reveal about 50 little snap marks and mismatched get coat. Perhaps an insurance claim is in order.

Re: Adventures in Canvas
I saw the post on THT also. I do canvas work myself (non-commercial) and after the material is decided on the next topic is always the attachment/fastener method we want to go with. I cant believe it either. I agree that the repaired holes wont fly. even looks like epoxy drips around the snaps

Re: Adventures in Canvas
That is amazing ..... I think I would have had to walk away before I got in real trouble ....WHAT'S WRONG WITH PEOPLE
And as briguy says ..... unless there is someone (and they are out there) VERY TALENTED in Gel coat repair and even more so in color matching ....that boat will show the repair...the snaps are so close to the rubrail I bet it will make for a real interesting repair...Honestly I would take control of the boat and get it fixed how I want it .....by someone I knew that could do the job properly |
Re: Adventures in Canvas
Brian,
Once you get your boat fixed and cool down a bit and still want the cover made. Call Ray at AE MIller and son, in annapolis, 410.269.5292, does excellent work at reasonable prices. He has done all my canvas work for over 10 years, currently making a full cover for the pocket rocket donzi. Tell him I refered you. Good luck, John Widmayer aka JW I once got an estimate from sandpiper, way over priced and i was not impressed with thier workmanship Kent Island canvas sucks as well. way over priced, shitty job. |
