It's about time!
Well boys, I finally bought myself a boat. No more spongin' off Dad and his SC. Unfortunately it's not a SeaCraft, but as far as I'm concerned it's the next best thing - 24 Seabird CC (really 23'). She's a 1972, originally an I/O converted to a notched transom OB a few years ago. The previous owner brought her up from FL last year. She's powered by a 1989 225 Johnson (the cover is from a 200) that runs like a top. She's got a trailer but it's only good enough for storage and short hauls, although the 90 mile trip home today went trouble-free. I've attached one pic that the owner had posted on his Web site. Hopefully I'll have more to show in the next few days.

Re: It's about time!
Scott ...That’s AWESOME!!!!!!!!
Congratulations and Lots and Lots of luck with her .... Your going to have a blast getting her where you want her to be and from what I've heard that’s a great boat !!!! |
Re: It's about time!
Nice ride.... I almost bought one a while back. Is that the original consel? There is an old Seabird in the yard were I keep my boat and I stop to look at it every once in a while.
Congrats Strick |
Re: It's about time!
Hey Scott - at first glance it will look like one of the rest at the next Newport CSC get together... You also bought it from a good guy and one of the original members here (did you know that?)
|
Re: It's about time!
Thanks for the kind words guys.
strick - The original console was replaced with this one out of a 23' Wellcraft CC. It's in great shape, although that go-fast steering wheel will be ditched for a destroyer type ASAP. The boat is a bit of a mongrel at this point, but everything is in structurally sound condition so I can't complain. And the price was right. John - Jeff is/was a CSC member? "Good guy" is an understatement. Jeff is one of the most stand-up, likeable, honest guys I've met (all of you CSC'ers I've met included as well ). |
Re: It's about time!
Scott - same guy. And yes he is a top notch guy by rep. I've only chatted online/e-mail with him a few times but for all points, good guy. I know a couple people that were interested in that boat too....

Re: It's about time!
Scott,
I assume you bought Jeff Smith's boat? Congrats--great project boat. I remember when Jeff bought it. Are you going to keep it at Hewitts or on a trailer (I own the Parker down the end of the dock from you and your dad.)? Unfortunately, Hewiits just jacked up their prices and I'm not sure if I will be staying... Good luck with it. Jeff |
Re: It's about time!
jeff/MA - yup, that's his boat. I live on the Weir River so I'll keep it on a mooring. My father told me about the price increase at Hewitt's, that hurts. Although you'll be hard-pressed to find another marina at a lower price in the area. By the way, I still owe you a ride on the SeaCraft .
bjfg144 - I've seen some of those episodes, that's a nice boat their re-doing. Hopefully mine will look that good one day. |
Re: It's about time!
That first boat of your very own, hmmmm sort of like first girlfriends. I think you did all right Scott and it was a nice way to spend a Saturday morning. Good Luck

Re: It's about time!
Scott,
Congratulations!! I'm sure you'll love it. Nice looking boat. Did you get to take her out? |
Re: It's about time!
If you watch Shipshape Tv. Right now, they are fixing up a 21' Seabird on the sunsine network. or go to www.shipshapetv.org. Seabird had a good hull design and was well made.

Re: It's about time!
Scott,
Congradulations... from a fellow project SeaBird owner! I have a '73 23 footer that was an I/O Cuddy model. I'm going to close the transom for a full floatation bracket and then interior mods. SeaBird made a nice boat in their time. I wish I knew more about the company's history. Best of luck. |
Re: It's about time!
Jim - no, I didn't get to take her out, but we ran the engine for a good 30 minutes or so without issue. Also did a compression test (courtesy of Jack ) with all cylinders equal.
JAL - do I hear the rumblings of ClassicSeabird.com? We'll have to keep in touch and compare notes. |

Re: It's about time!

Re: It's about time!
Scott-
Hope you covered that Seabird up before the big storm! I think we should go "ice" fishing with it in Boston harbor. I can't believe the charles river has already frozen over in spots....this is the earliest I can remember in the ten years I have lived here. Ed |
Re: It's about time!
Scotty,
Where you out of? Ed, Like a dummy I didn't cover her up. Yesterday I shoveled her out with a dustpan (didn't have a plastic shovel) just so today's rain today didn't add addtional weight. Codfishing huh? I might be convinced to give it a try . Got the new electronics the other day so I'm dying to play with those. |
Re: It's about time!
Cover that baby up asap. I just shoveled out a 30' center console that the owner left uncovered and the snow, ice, water etc. was everywhere (i.e on top of the gas tank, ice in the foam, ice on the stringers, etc).
Do you know of anyone with a garage that you can rent for the winter? Might be worth it....it will allow you to work on it and keep her dry. -Ed- |
Re: It's about time!
A dustpan??? Why didn't you just go overboardand use a teaspoon? Must have taken hours to shovel out 2 feet of snow with a DUSTPAN!
What kind of electronics did you get??/ |
Re: It's about time!
Scott I have a mooring on the Anisquam river in Gloucester. I am usually up there most weekends June untill it gets cold. we take a couple of motocycle weekends off from fishing and diving.
I keep the boat on the trailer untill i launch so i can fish around untill i put it on the ball. (cheaper dragging it to the cape than running it down.) covered and sleeping untill Aprill now. Later Scotty. |
Re: It's about time!
Ed,
Wish I knew someone with indoor storage, paying or for free. Saturday is supposed to be decent so I'll get her covered up then. Yeah, the dustpan was not the easist way, but it worked. We got about a foot of snow, so not too bad. I ended up getting an Icom M402S VHF, Furuno LS6100 fish finder, and a Garmin GPS Map 162 chartplotter. Color wasn't in the budget unfortunately. Scotty, You're up Ed's way then. It's been years since I ran up to the North Shore, maybe I'll have to make a trip this year. |
Re: It's about time!
Hey Scott-
I am sure you will be happy with those electronics...color or lcd....still shows the same stuff, right? Keep poking around for storage space....even if you were able to find a garage for a month or two, it would give you some time to do stuff before spring so you don't have to rush it in the water come May. All trips to the northshore are welcome. With the new TACO outriggers, new cushions (spring project) and maybe a new Navman fuel computer.....the old Mako will be looking better than new. -Ed- |
