NORTHERN GUYS & CABIN FEVER

I DON’T KNOW HOW YOU GUYS UP NORTH CAN HANDLE YOUR WINTER NO FISHING SEASON. IT JUST TUESDAY AND ALL READY I AM GETTING ANXIOUS THINKING OF FISHING THIS WEEKEND. EVERY WEEK DAY I GET UP AND THINK OF “IF ONLY I COULD TAKE THE DAY OFF TO GO FISHING.” EVERY WEEK I THING OF HOW COULD I MAKE MONEY AND NOT WORK OR HOW CAN I MAKE MONEY FISHING. WINTER MUST BE LIKING FISHERMAN’S HELL FOR YOU GUYS. TODAY AT LUNCH TIME I WENT TO A MARINE STORE JUST TO LOOK AROUND.

When you figure out how to make money without working - send me a pm will ya? Used to be that the Northeast had all the manufacturing and hence the good jobs. Now, I'm not sure what I'm doing here either. The winter BITES, well maybe it builds character, or maybe it makes us appreciate the time we get on the water more, maybe we're just a bunch of dumb dogs that don't know enough to get out of the rain! I actually climbed under the cover this weekend to knock the snow off, alright I admit it I DID GRAB THE WHEEL AND MAKE SOME PUTT-PUTT OUTBOARD NOISES!
Yes it sucks, but I heard the pitchers and catchers are reporting to spring training next week.
Are we over the hump yet?

Cabin fever, holy crap thats an understatement! I've been painting cabnets and doors for fun. Everytime I pass my boat I sware it flips me the bird. If I get really bored I go out to the shed and have a little talk with my tackle. And to top it all off, me the wife and kids have been stuck inside for that past week and a half with a an f'n cold that won't quite ........cabin fever.
Where's my nyquil?

I've been nuts lately with nothing to look forward to, I'm thinking about buying some shop tools to keep me busy next winter.
I did get some pullage (that's means hooked into fish where I'm from) on sunday. It looks like the local power plant can be a productive winter fishin' hole...

Re: NORTHERN GUYS & CABIN FEVER

I thought the whole point of winter was to rebuild classic SeaCrafts!

I redid a 22 SeaRay Laguna last year and due to the early spring (we fished Lake Ontario every month last winter), I never really finished it. If it was nice here all year, nothing would ever get get done.

We're so busy with business and kid's, etc., I had to put someone on the payroll fulltime to move the SeaCraft project along.

Not to mention, southern summers suck! Can you say JetBlue? We're in West Palm next week.

I think we all park our cars in the same garage. I'm out of my mind and this d*mn internet does'nt help. All I do all day is drool over boat sights. Speaking of which, I am a computer neophite, I know there are more links to picture pages other than the SC home page shows (18,19,20,23's), how do I get to them? Trayder or John R posted some pics of my boat somewhere and I lost the link. My wife is getting really tired of me driving 30 mins to see my boat every weekend so pls help...

Gee, I remember scraping ice off the old windshield in days gone by...but...a buddy and I took my 18 from St. Thomas over to the British Virgin Islands last weekend. Sunny and warm, we dove on some great reefs, then zipped over to Cane Garden Bay for burgers and beer.

Later snorkeled in the caves that supposedly were part of the inspiration for "Treasure Island," a little trolling, and then headed home. I'm afraid the more I write the worse it'll make you guys feel, so I'll leave it at that...hope you fellas get an early spring thaw!

Cabin Fever stinks!

My only relief is the occassional ski trip, drooling over this website and helping my friend restore boats at his shop on Saturday's. The big problem with that is I wish I was working on my boat inside the heated shop (My to-do list for the spring is a mile long) .

I 'm starting to think that a hot summer beats a 5 month long , frigid, sub-zero, winter any day.

Re: NORTHERN GUYS & CABIN FEVER

I don't mind winter if the temp and weather allow me to get some stuff done outside but the temps we had recently were killing me, way to cold. I stood under the tarp today just looking at the boat,I'm sure the neighbor thinks I'm nuts, I'm waiting for a stretch of warmer weather to 5200 the new gas tank in, until then it(tank) sits in the corner of the living room gleaming in the sun that comes through the window. Trips to West Marine and any tackle store seem to help. Ahh spring time soon but not to soon.

Miles Offshore - Rutgers, huh? Isn't that Big East territory? (Heard Va. Tech. trounced UConn last night.) Why not the ACC? Seriously, Rutgers has been making a name for itself and gaining respect even as far south as Atlanta. Lots of luck to your son! Hope it means some scholarship $. How many SeaCrafts could be bought for the price of a college education nowadays?

Thanx Merriweather. Big East I. He hs already been accepted to Rutgers so he is going up tommorow for a visit. No $$$offers yet. Still waiting to hear from Va. Tech, Longwood, Mary Washington and a couple of others. Already visited UVA but he didnt care for the campus. A lot depends on his performance this spring as the #1 pitcher at his HS. (Heres hoping he has a geat year). One thing for sure- we are not commiting to any school fr a while. He is just blessed that he is left handed and is a pitcher. I wont bore ya cause I can talk baseball almost as much as I talk Seacrafts!!!!!

Re: NORTHERN GUYS & CABIN FEVER

Okay, I hit rock bottom. I ordered another set of boat plans from bateau.com to build a 13' whaler knock off this winter/early spring. I can't find any decent 23' SC rebuild candidates. I built a 14' flat bottom skiff designed by this guy last winter. Very simple to build and sturdy. It took about 100 hours and cost appx $700 all in. You could really do it for abt $500 but I overbuilt and wasted a lot of wood, glass and resin. I'll send pics to John R if u guys want to see it.

Re: NORTHERN GUYS & CABIN FEVER

Come on guys - its easy. Just follow my lead

Instead of cleaning the tackle, you can rebuild the kitchen counter for your wife.

And instead of tying flies for the trout season, you can re-paint and wall paper the kitchen for your wife.

And of course, instead of building a new rod or two, you can replace the kitchen floor for your wife.

Then, instead of going to the boat and sporting shows, you can take your wife shopping.

Naturally, instead of reading up on methods of restoration and lining up experts to handle the restoration of your classic SeaCraft, you can spend time more usefully by taking your wife shopping some more.

Finally, instead of shooting yourself, you can just go to your office, rev up the computer and (if your a lawyer like me) print out the divorce papers.

TIME TO GO FISHING SOON !!!!!

You know, I was checking my notes and it turns out that I actually painted the blonde with a Benjamin Moore exterior latex semi gloss and a good 4" poly brush!

Thanx John,I will ride by and check on the status of that Sceptre tomorrow, needless to say the flights out to Phili were cancelled today cause of the snow everywhere else up north, I think we got about 2"of rain. Great CCA fishing show and seminars coming up at the end of the month here if anyone is interested....

merriweather 02-10-2003 10:19 AM

Re: NORTHERN GUYS & CABIN FEVER

Bill, thanks for the semi gloss update! A 4-inch brush, huh? At times like this I wish I were ambidextrous. Considering what everyone has said, I'm already prepared to be exhausted and ultra sore (and wonder what we have gotten ourselves into). Perhaps arranging an appointment with a good masseur at the end of it all will be incentive enough to get started when the time comes. (An appointment beforehand would work, too.) Considering your location, I might have guessed you were a UConn grad (and now we all know your age) - seems to me I heard a tale or two about them while I was in school. Me diss your Huskies? I heard they got LUCKY with 3-pointers over the weekend against Providence. Tonight's match-up vs. No. 19 Syracuse should prove to be a REAL contest. I will admit you've got one heck of a women's team! How long do you suppose they can maintain their winning streak? Nothing like a good basketball game to cure the winter doldrums, but baseball season equals boating season. Can't wait!

Re: NORTHERN GUYS & CABIN FEVER

Tonight's the night MW - which team will show up? I'm hoping they got all the funk out of their system.I'm predicting a close game, but a Husky 5 point win.Look for me, I'll be there!
If it weren't for college hoops, the only sports I'd watch would Jose on Sun mornings.
The lady Huskies - fuggedaboutit - they're gonna run the table!

Billybob, how would anyone recognize you? I highly doubt you'll be wearing your garage gear! Enjoy the game. I'll be rooting for Syracuse!

Okay, BB, your Huskies have earned my respect. The highlights made it look like a crazy slam dunk/tip-in fest for UConn. It must have been an exciting night to be in the audience. Looked like a full house despite the snow storm in progress up there in snowblower country. How's it looking today? Who/what is jose on sunday?

Re: NORTHERN GUYS & CABIN FEVER

Oh yeah! Hate to say I told you so, but, well...
Not bad for such a young team, they're starting to get it together. Now we just got to whoop up on Nova at their home, and we're on our way!
Jose's on at 10, and then you got George Poveromo at 10.30 sometimes you can catch him fishing for some "our" fish up here (stripers), which I find helps me get through the winter even if he does run a Mako.I had to laugh at him last week though, when he failed to remove the gaff before he released that shark.

Thanks, Scott! My husband and I are both boating/fishing (they go hand in hand, don't they?) neophytes with LOTS to learn. Any other programs out there that might be helpful/informative?

Re: NORTHERN GUYS & CABIN FEVER

Merriweather,
A good show to watch for do-it-yourself boat maintenance is Ship Shape TV on Outdoor Life Network (OLN). I can't remember the schedule, but it used to be on Sunday mornings around 11:00. Fishing-related, there are many shows on ESPN2 on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, plus OLN runs shows at various times. Definitely a God-send for us northerners in wintertime.
