Digital Camera HELP needed
I received a great Olympus 3 megapixel digital camera for Christmas. It took a little while to get it all figure out but now I've mastered it. My question. The camera came with Camedia software. I loaded it on my computer and transfered the pictures to my computer. They told me if I wanted to email the pictures, I had to upgrade to Camedia Pro software for $20 bucks. I did. I composed an email and attached a photo as a test. Then I come to find out the software cannot support the AOL email system. So here I am with all these SeaCraft pictures that I cannot email to the sight. What the heck can I do? Is other software available to use with my camera? Please help if you can.

Re: Digital Camera HELP needed
Briguy - that software is OK if you want to just e-mail from the camera but for AOL (they really don't do standards well) you may need to download it to your hard drive, edit the software with some editing program (you may already have one) from free to really expensive and then manually e-mail it like you would any other attachment. Did your computer come with Microsoft Office? If so what version? If not, what other software did it come with?

Re: Digital Camera HELP needed
John R,
Check out www.digideep.com once on the site, go to the list of underwater housing manufacturers and select the brand of camera that you have (not EWA-Marine!!). The Ewa bags work but the rigid housings are more durable and take UV abuse better. Most of these new housings for the consumer digital cameras are really cheap compared to what the 35mm housings run. Once you have found the exact housing you want, see if B&H in NYC has a better price or not. Good luck/ mark |
Re: Digital Camera HELP needed
Briguy ...any Luck ??? I want to see that transom work/and engines !!!!
John The housing I have is an Ikelite U/W housing rated for a depth of 200 feet .... Its built to house the 20xx,30xx, and 40xx series of Olympus cameras.... There are a few other manufacturers including Light and Motion Tetra , and the Olympus PT-010 .... the Tetra (is cast out of aluminum..2 or 300 foot rating) is over $1,000 and the Olympus (depth rated to 98 feet) is $300 the Ikelite falls in the middle....Its a very well built housing !!! the picture shows the housing plus an add on lens and an external strobe http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...c/fcac80cd.jpg and these are a couple of pics that were on the card and taken using it Napoleon Wrasse http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...7/fcc6a697.jpg and a couple of Clams http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...f/fce83f9f.jpg |
Re: Digital Camera HELP needed
Capt Brian.....cant wait to see the BOAT !!!!
Personally I would do as JohnR suggests....resize the pictures using some kind of software (I use the Camedia software) then attach them to an email separately (I’m not familiar with the in’s and out’s of AOL)..... As I'm sure your aware you cant attach pictures to this site directly....Trayder has to do that .... Or JohnR can put them up on his site that he hosts.....Third option is to get an account at www.fishingworks.com or www.Imagestation.com (they are both free) upload pictures there and then link them to the site...just like this http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...2/fce81faf.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...7/fcf8e9f4.jpg These were taken with an Olympus 3.3 mp camera (one with a U/W housing of course ) and resized using the Camedia software and attached using Imagestation (only bad thing is that these sites will resize your image to a standard size as seen above) Once you get the hang of it …it’s a great way to share pictures….I’m very pleased with the camera |
Re: Digital Camera HELP needed
Thanks guys - I'm looking to go to 6-8 feet and get some shots of some of the holes I fish - I failed my test dive - problems with the ears as a kid and can't equalize for crud now....
thanks for the info... |
Re: Digital Camera HELP needed
John,
One thing you will have to be careful with when using a housing for a consumer digital and using the built-in flash on the camera is what is referred to as "back scatter". Because the flash is in line with the lens, you will potentially have images that look as though it is snowing (all of the particles in the water lit up by your flash). Unless you have a flash on a bracket like pictured above, you can pretty much be guaranteed of this effect. Just something to be aware of/ mark |

Re: Digital Camera HELP needed
Hey Mark .....Dont you think that John would be well suited with one of those EWA -Marine "housings" ....
I have thought of getting one ....not so much for use Underwater but rather as protection for the camera on the boat (spray and such) I have seen video that was filmed using one of those "bags" was impressed .... I think they are rated for something like 40 feet .... John ...Just something to consider since your not going to any depth with the camera plus they dont cost what the "real" housings cost.....If not I'm sure we could plan an U/W photo trip/expedition |
Re: Digital Camera HELP needed
Scott,
Yes, they would certainly get the job done. That being said, I'm not sure what the current cost is on an EWA bag but a friend just bought a plexi housing for a Canon digital camera for about $100 and it's good down to 100'. While I realize that is about 95' deeper than we are looking to achieve here, the flexible EWA's are somewhat hard to use compared to a rigid housing. You have to continuously keep scooting the cameras controls over to where the glove thing is. I think the extra $ may be well spent on one of the production housings made by the camera manufacturers, which are pretty cheap for what they do while providing a protective barrier around the camera, which the EWA doesn't do (as far as knocks and bumps). They would also make for a great boat/fishing bag setup when cumbersome diving setups weren't called for. I use primarily Subal aluminum housings and custom housings by Aquatech. Considering the domes on the Subal are around $1K for the glass alone, I was pretty impressed with my friends little hundred dollar housing - very cool indeed (and about the size of a disposable camera). My only complaint now is that my wifes new little digital camera is too new for there to be a housing for it! |
Re: Digital Camera HELP needed
Mark.....I totally agree ....and in fact that is probably cheaper than one of those bags....I guess it depends on what John is trying to house....hope he has a canon!!!
BTW...Thats a nice U/W rig you have !!!! we may need to talk !!!! |
Re: Digital Camera HELP needed
Scott,
From the shots you posted, it looks like your outfit is working out pretty good. I do a certain amount of 50/50 shots (where half is below water and half is above) and so I need a pretty big dome - I use both 12" and 15" domes, which are cumbersome but it's done to pay the rent so somewhat necessary. With the split diopters and all, it is more than most want to deal with. I really like the thought of using these consumer digitals in the production housings for my fishing shots of friends holding a fish. I just got my Epson 2200 all color managed/profiled and can now print archival images off my wifes digital camera - now they just need to build a housing for it! (4 MP Konica Revio KD 400). When they put out a reasonably priced housing for the NIkon Coolpix 5000, you'll see me running for the phone to call B&H. |
Re: Digital Camera HELP needed
Mark ....Thanks....It seems to hold its own... Its not Film but I’m rather impressed with what it can do... I'm envious of your printer ....must be real nice ... I was even thinking of the "old" 1280 .... Between diving/U/W photo and the boat....
I'm sure your aware but Ikelite has something in the works.... (maybe even available) for the Nikon 5000....(nice camera!!) Any thoughts on the Olympus 5050....I'm sort of hot on the tail of one of those.....but it will need a new housing....I guess I'm Olympus biased (well for now at least since I'm comfortable with what I have) I think the housing is a little less also (retail for the Olympus at around $600 and the Nikon at closer to $1000 ) |
Re: Digital Camera HELP needed
Scott,
I briefly played with that Olympus at PhotoExpo in NY in November but that's about it. I was more keen on the Kodak 14n which is a 14 MB camera but apparently there are still a few bugs to work out (it puts out a 41MB file, which is getting close to what I'm after - ideally 55MB or more). Olympus makes a good product, as do many of the other manufacturers right now. If what you have accomplishes what you are after, I wouldn't see any reason to switch. |
